Brentwood Team Camp thoughts.....

A few quick thoughts from three days of watching a lot of volleyball. I didn't see every team play that attended (22 in all). But I did see some good volleyball this early preseason.

The two best teams I saw were Brentwood and Siegel. I think the folks at the Fieldhouse are still replacing some boards from the hits provided by BHS's KM and GJ. I think Siegel's only loss was to Brentwood.

The loudest match of the weekend was Houston vs. Collierville. I don't know who won as I was on another court but the intensity of that match rang throughout the building.

Ravenwood and Centennial were each without a key injured player. Both schools have a freshman as their backup varsity setter. So it was hard to get a feel for how good they can be.

Other than KK at Brentwood, the best setters I saw were from St. George's and Blackman. Franklin with their new coach looked good. Hard working cohesive team.

It was an overdose of volleyball but I am ready now for the season to start!

Brentwood and Siegel definitely look the best. Wasn't the Siegel coach an assistant at Brentwood several years ago? Both of these teams have great setters who do a great job of making great hitters look even better.

If Ravenwood and Centennial can bring their young setters along throughout the season, then both teams should be more consistent, but it will still be tough to compete with Brentwood and Siegel.

Blackman's setter is really good with a tall middle who can block, hit, and pass. This team did have another middle who was on crutches and did not play.

He was an assistant at BHS a few years ago. Wasn't that an awesome match especially so early in the season? You're absolutely right about both their setters. KK and JM are great. I forgot to mention TS from SHS was also putting holes in the floor. I think BHS didn't have one of their OH's bc of basketball. Could be wrong about that. The Bruins also had a player move in from Clarksville and she looked strong as well. I think that match was an early preview of the last AAA match of the upcoming season.

K2 if you don't see Siegel in finals then you haven't seen Siegel,Coach Robinson is the right fit for this senior loaded team,The match with Brentwood at Ensworth playday yesterday was awesome. If anyone wants to see these two battle, they will meet yet again at The Brentwood Blastoff at A-game,Saturday at noon.

Kaela Massey, she's a junior. Played up in club last year.

Thanks. Good for Brentwood not for the rest of the teams. Most impressive offensive weapon I've seen in a few years. Really like the way they bring her from the outside almost unnoticed til her approach is almost done pretty good setters they have. Overall best offensive teams I've seen this year. And I've seen most of the top teams from middle to east. Haven't seen to many from the west. Yet!

Brentwood is loaded with great middles. I saw Kaela doing the same thing as you described so I figured it was her you were talking about. The Bruins have three seniors, all great, but they are not going anywhere for a while.

i have seen every Siegel team play since the school opened and this is the most talented team they have had.   Not sure how they under perform every year.  They have never been good enough to win a state championship (mid 2000's they had a team that was good enough but a late injury changed all of that), yet they get to the state about every year and the final 4 several times. How is that under performing?   The simple fact is DB, Ravenwood and Brentwood were all better then them over the last 10 years at different times.   I hope the do well!

    • From my understanding, Jay Graham pretty much took over HC responsibilities in that game, so you can thank him. Cute Andy didn’t need help, though. Cute Andy could’ve beaten us without any assistant coaches.
    • Tax payer dollars are paid for certified teachers to "teach" and then coach. The primary job is to teach.  There are some district that ay awesome supplements and others that don't. Dyersburg and Dyer County are pretty close if I remember correctly. I would imagine that Football and basketball are above $10,000 now.  I've heard that Milan is $20,000 for boys basketball. I would imagine that football is more than that in Milan.  Collierville has camps that coaches get paid extra for. 3 camps a year, 100 kids a camp, $30,000 right there.  There are places like Memphis-Shelby County schools where the supplements are garbage even for the head coaches. I made less than $3,000 as the head assistant at Germantown in 2015 when we were 26-4 and one of the best teams in the Southeast. As a head middle school coach next year I will make between $4-5,000 at a municipal in Shelby County.  Coaches should be compensated for the jobs that are required but lets keep in mind that they are educators first.  It's pretty frustrating to other teachers that work their tale off teaching 6-7 classes a day to watch someone roam campus, not teach (or have very minimal responsibilities), and get paid the same (more with supplements) as a person who has the some years of experience or sometimes less.
    • This will get coaches leaving the profession very quickly if this kid wins this case. This is absurd...
    • yeah money aint right there anymore
