Coaching Carousal Begins

The News Sentinel today announced that Coach Garland was out at Catholic. 2Players and other posters have commented on the worst kept secret in town that Coach McGinnis was stepping down at Bearden. Other jobs are coming open (probably 3 or 4) but where will the coaches come from?

As I have said before, high school coaching is not that strong. Parents will start pulling their daughters. Why are there no good high school coaches

K2, I agree, it seems as though there may be several coaching positions open.  And I also agree, there are high school coaches that are not world class coaches.  However with that said, when I look at the coaching rosters of some of the local clubs, there are not very many of those that I would think would elevate a high school team with state tournament aspirations either.  Just because they are part of KVA or K2 does not make them the best of the best.  Coaches are teachers, and we don't have very many "volleyball" coaches that are good teachers of the game.  Too many coaches know the X's and O's, but don't do a very good job of getting that knowledge to the players in the best way.  Very frustrating.

Being the varsity coach at a competitive high school is much more difficult than coaching a single club team.  The administration time alone is very time consuming.  And from my experiences of doing both, there is much more pressure to succeed at the high school level than the club level.  You can look at all the frustrated posts on CoachT to see that.

K2 who do you think are the top 4 club coaches as of right now, in the Knoxville area that are not already coaching high school that you would recommend to a high school athletic director looking for a new coach to lead their program?

BB I am also concerned about the club roster of coaches. KVA seems to have mainly young girls who played high school ball but who have no coaching experience. However, there are 4 club coaches who, in my opinion, are well prepared and would be superior to any area high school coaches except Webb. Steve Dallman, Tom Pazko, Shannon Mincey and Jason Keeble.

I believe it is harder to coach a competitive club. BB, name me four high school coaches, other than the Webb coach, with the experience of these four club coaches. I don't think you can do it.

I believe if Mincey wants the Bearden job it's hers. Williams or Keeble are possible fits for Catholic. If CAK opens I don't know, maybe Alves, the middle school coach?

Thoughts.

You call that a "coaching" staff at KVA? You must be joking. They have a bunch of players that, wish they could play D1 volleyball, coaching for them. There are NO volleyball coaches at KVA. Also the rumor around town is the parents aren't very happy with the way things "didn't" go down as promised last year at kva.

PhillyAI, do you have insight into the Bearden job? I am hearing that it has been promised to Mincey? Why won't she get it?

The problem with Bearden is that it is not that attractive of a job. They had a good group come thru with a great setter but no real history. I have heard Garland is not interested in coaching next year. If you don't take Mincey who are you going to get?

I think Shannon will apply if she has some assurance that she will get the job. Philly AI seems to has some insight into Bearden that they don't want her which is odd. I don't think Bearden could do any better. Jason I believe will apply for multiple jobs. I don't know about the other two, I imagine that they have their plate pretty full.

BB, by your silence I assume that you agree that there are no area coaches who are the caliber of the four I mentioned. I

PhillyAI, I agree that KVA may be in trouble. You can't charge the fees they charge to be in a warehouse with recent high school grads as coaches. Parents expect more, and the girls should receive more.

Does Jason have head coaching experience outside of club volleyball.  As I said before coaching club and high school are two different animals, and I think high school is the more difficult of the two.  But we can probably agree to disagree on that point.  But experience at something besides club would sure help his cause.  Just a question, and not meaning anything negative about it, but do you have coaching experience?  Would you apply for any of the jobs that are open or might open up?  Curious.

Have not tried to.  It would be a futile effort on CoachT.  I can name coaches who have had success with their high school teams, but they are still criticized for their efforts.  I am still not convinced except for Coach Mincy who has college coaching experience if any of the three you mentioned would have "lasting" success at the high school level.  I do not know anything about them except they coach at K2.  But maybe they would, guess they would need to take that leap and try it huh?

Like I said, club and high school are different.  We shall see how this all unfolds.  So far as I know only one school is looking right now.  K2R keep us up on things, we appreciate it.
