Maryville... What are they doing different there?

For us high school football fans who only get to see them if (when) they make it to the finals, can you please fill us in on what they are doing different there?  Am I right in saying that since 2001 the program is 199-7....?      That's impressive and to have that kind of success for so many years in a row....that's just so hard to do!

Is it all coaching?   Is it the youth football programs or feeder programs?  Is it just a mentality once they get in the program?   is the community or area just that much bigger so they have more kids to choose from?    Is it the system?    Is it the water?

I know the coaching is good, just look at the record and that is clear, but has it been the same complete staff for all 13+ years now?   You would think with the success this program has had that many coaches would move on to head jobs of their own at other schools or even move up into the college ranks.

I do not think the community is all that much bigger then other cities like Johnson City (SH who they play tonight) or Kingsport (DB), and other middle or West TN cities so i don;t think they just have more bodies.  You even have two other schools in the area with a power in Alcoa there too.

I would think it's a product of the youth and middle school programs.    If you make good players early then they will be fantastic players as they get older.    that's how I see it but I want to here how you all feel.

Ok that was just a basic fan answer.  What makes their staff so much better?   and you don't just "luck" into that kind of talent over a 14 year span.  They are "producing" it year in and out.   all i am asking is what are they doing thats so much better then other schools across this state?

Also would they ever consider playing another power-house like a Hoover or Don Bosco Prep or a Oscar Smith?  would like to see how they would do outside the state against other power programs.

I'll let the Maryville fans explain it in detail if they want. I have been told several times by Maryville fans and people that work within "the system". It is all so simple but they have and keep the right people in the system all working together toward one goal. They don't allow for egos to get in the way at any time. The most amazing part of the whole deal to me is no other school can duplicate their system. Even though they will set down and tell you exactly how they do it. I think maybe the reason no other school can do it is maybe the ego thing. That and probably its so simple all these "smart" coaches can't figure it out.

Everyone wants to belong to a winning system. The foundation for much of this success was during the Ted Wilson years almost fifty years ago. The feeder system keeps bringing on more and more good players. A great coaching staff also helps. No one playing on both sides of the ball with plenty of substitution going on all the time keeping players fresh while most other teams play their kids till they drop which is stupid. This gives kids coming back experience and that is the biggest reason we can reload every year and do it again.

I see teams come in here and have 60-70 kids on the team and 20 are lucky if they play at all. Those type coaches are from the old days and to set in their ways to learn any different. It's not rocket science and that's why it's so crazy to see one of these teams come in here with that old mind set and you know what's going to happen.

Sure I understand the "player rotation" factor.   and you are right you have got to be able to keep players fresh for the whole game.  however very few programs even with 70-80 players are that deep with "real" talent.   most of 20-25 at most that can play at 6A level. that's seniors and juniors who have put the work in.  after that the drop off is huge    Now if the feeder programs are producing freshman and sophomores that can come in and help at that level then I can see that all day.   Its hard to get a good feeder program to keep that up so congrats to them.  It shows!!

It is more than that. Most schools are willing to put the emphasis and spending on sports like Maryville does. The most impressive thing that gets lost in this is they are top notch academically as well. Williamson County could emulate Maryville but they are unwilling to put in changes to make it necessary due to the academic side.

Also big advantage being a city school system funding one school, it eliminates a lot of hoops they have to jump through. I applaud the community for being all in with their school.

I thought there was 4 schools in that county.  Maryville, Alcoa, William Blount and Heritage right?

and three of those are 6A schools too right?  or is Maryville the only 6A

Better Coaching and more talent make a powerhouse program. The Rebels don't rebuild, they reload.

THEY PLAY THE SAME CUPCAKES YEAR AFTER YEAR AND STAY IN THEIR LANE...6A IS NO DIFFERENT FROM 5A.....THEY DON'T GO TO GA OR S. CAROLINA OR EVEN KENTUCKY TO CHALLENGE THEMSELVES TO SEE IF THEY ARE REALLY A POWERHOUSE TEAM...

THEY TRIED ENSWORTH FOR A QUARTER AND GOT EXPOSED......I WON'T BE IMPRESSED UNTIL THEY GO OUTSIDE OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE AND PLAY SOME REAL POWERHOUSES....WILLIAM BLOUNT, WEST, HERITAGE, HARDIN, LENIOR, WEB, ALCOA, SEVIER, BEARDEN. AND FARRAGUT ARE THE TEAMS THEY PLAY YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR....SAME RESULTS...NO CHALLENGE...REALLY???? THEY HAD A CHANCE TO PLAY 5A BALL...BUT THEY WENT RIGHT BACK TO THE SAME OLE CUPCAKES......THEY ARE THE BIG FISH IN THE POND FEASTING ON GUPPIES.....REWARD....GOLD BALL....

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
