Multiple state titles? Really? Are you sure about that?  In the Clinic Bowl Era (pre-split) '72-'96 for football:

MBA: 0

Baylor: 1 (73)

McCallie: 0

CBHS: 1 (77)

FRHS: 1 (74)

MUS: 1 (85)

that's 6 of the original "super 7." That's 4 titles in 24 years...and none in a decade preceding the split.  Those schools were really bad to have squandered all those unfair advantages that they enjoyed.

So, it definitely wasn't football.  Must have been other sports like basketball...I'll check the TSSAA site to see how many basketball titles those schools won, pre-split.

Football:

Division II Class A:

A couple of these listed above as not having football do have it. 7 regions is a little awkward, but just get 16 from Regions 1-4 and 16 from 5-7. Class AA would be similar to how it is now, just add Knoxville Catholic.

Really, it is not very difficult. Could have been put in for this fall even.

No better time than the present to divide and conquer so allow the split to take place ASAP. The reason that Benard does not want all the private schools to be placed in one (1) division is because there is security in numbers. If this takes place there would be a total of 72 private schools in D2 and the strong rumor on the street is those 72 private schools would leave the TSSAA and form their own association. The TSSAA would take a significant revenue hit that could result in employee layoffs inside the TSSAA offices.

What would he think if about 150 rural schools, up to 1000 students, had enough and decided to form their own organzation?

IMO, if the small rural schools want to form another association that is what they should do. My personal thoughts are that the TSSAA has out grown the capabilities of those that run the organization. You have educators trying to operate a multi million dollars business without any business training. The TSSAA should get a group of about 5 or 6 non biased business professionals together and revamp the entire rule book and organization. Edited by cbg
