COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT Logos, Nicknames, Colors...

"Copyright infringement occurs when someone other than the copyright holder copies the “expression†of a work. This means that the idea or information behind the work is not protected, but how the idea is expressed is protected. For example, there have been many movies about Pirates, but only one Jack Sparrow.

Copyright infringement can occur even if someone does not copy a work exactly. This example of copyright infringement is most easily apparent in music and art. Copyright infringement occurs if the infringing work is “substantially similar†to the copyrighted work."

I started thinking about this when I saw adalum96's Star Logo. Here is an article from a few years ago in the Washington Post. I know Science Hill had a very expensive issue with this a few years back. Any other stories out there.

(Tulsa, OK) Union and Miami (Florida).

Union has an agreement with Miami and pays to use the "Split U" logo. It was $1,000 per year. I am not sure what it is now. Union also has a policy to protect the Union logos and colors.

I read the .pdf  link. They seem to have gotten things straightened out since getting jammed up in the past.

Alnwick has ripped off every sports logo known to man....

Not really, but really.

I'm just serious.

"Certainly I can understand that as the University of Virginia we have a popular brand and carries some weight across high schools in Virginia. That's why we pay particular attention that they are not using the Cavalier marks or crossed swords without capitalizing on the university's brand."
