Memory Lane: 1995 Brentwood Academy Eagles (20-year anniversary)

The NE game was at BA.  The following week, in the semi's, MBA and BA met for the first time ever in an actual game.  I was there that night...I don't know what the official attendance was, but the stadium (BA has seats only on one side of the stadium) was completely overflowing at 5:00 PM, 2 hrs before kick-off.  MBA was led by future NC-winning Vol Will Bartholomew.  They hung around for a half, but BA ultimately was too good.  Hunter Adkins (who began his career at MBA) went off in the second half...they just had too many weapons on that team.

MBA also played NE that year...Travis Stephens had a video-game like stat line.  He had 200+ yards on like 15 carries.  He was unstoppable....but that BA team held him in check somehow in the playoffs.

This was my junior year. We played MBA twice (they ended our season in the 3rd round) and Northeast once. There was some INCREDIBLE talent in Middle Tennessee that year. That was actually a really strong Henry County team, probably the best team I personally played on, but we had no answer for Travis Stephens or MBA (twice).

All that said, Brentwood Academy was the cream of the crop in the mid-90's

Agree with what MSURacer said.

I've always had respect for Brentwood Academy and the success they've had, especially since (as far as I know) they VOLUNTARILY bumped up to 5A, and then went 30-0 against the biggest schools in TN.

Now we (Alcoa) are in the same shoes BA was in back then in terms of being hated and accused of winning because of "transfers" and "recruiting" due to our continued success. But.....like the hatred toward BA, the hatred toward us is only because we win (like the Yankees, the Patriots, Duke basketball, etc.).

I can only imagine what kind of stuff would've been said to BA posters if CoachT existed back then.

At the time, I personally loved competing with the private schools. They were some of my favorite games. During my four years of high school we played MBA five times and Baylor twice, going 3-4 in those games. All four losses were against MBA, but they were all competitive outings.

We also played Brentwood Academy a couple times in the early 90's.

I've never had a problem with the private schools, but then again, that's easy for me to say when there aren't any in our back yard, so to each their own lol.

I hear you. We have several Knoxville private schools AND Maryville to compete with, so we'll take whatever we can get, LOL!!

I was more of an MBA fan then, but that BA team was the best I have seen in the 46 years I have followed TN high school football. With the big uproar now over financial aid, let's remember then you could only have 3 football players on financial aid actually play. They had the best coaches and unbelievable talent!

That BA team had the most dominating defense this state has seen. The starting defense was loaded with college players. Here is their lineup and college they played at:

DE Air Force
DT MTSU
NG nowhere
DT Memphis
DE Tennessee
LB Nebraska
LB Georgia Military ( Tito Lee. The best player on the team, but didn't qualify)
CB Virginia Tech
CB Tennessee
SS Vanderbilt
FS Tennessee

Most of these guys played on offense too. An offense that had receivers that went to Ole Miss and Army, and a tackle that went to Texas.

Wow! That's a LOT of D1 college talent, and Carlton Flatt's system made it that much better. Hard to find that much talent anymore.

Sadly, playing all the way up to 5A made too much of a case for the public schools and the TSSAA to create D-II.

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
