Inadvertent Whistle

OK you refs out there, what is the rule on an inadvertent whistle?  On a kickoff in the Southwind/Centennial game, the ball went over the SW returner's head and died around the three yard line.  He picked it up, started up field and just as the posse arrived about the nine yard line, the ref suddenly blew the whistle and signaled touch back.  Guess he confused the five yard line with the goal line but if so, he should have called the touch back immediately. They initially spotted the ball at the nine but after a discount double check huddle, CHS was required to kick off again and SW ended up with the ball at the 40. I don't recall seeing an inadvertent whistle result in a "do over" but am certainly not a rule book expert. Clarification is appreciated.

Something similar happened in the Rhea County vs McMinn County, 2 weeks ago.  The play was not done over.   But those refs had no clue what they were doing so who knows if another set of refs would have replayed the down.

We had a similiar situation at Maryville thirsday night. Refs were from Carter co. They were trrrible

They have the option of taking the play or having it replayed. So in this case they chose to replay the down or kickoff in this case

Receiving team can take possession at spot of whistle or have a rekick.

Thanks.  Centennial had been pooching kicks all night and sucked the deep man up.  Crossed them up with a deep kick that was executed perfectly.  Rules are rules but it seems unfair to in essence penalize them 30 yards because the ref gagged the call.  They won and are moving on so it worked out in the end.  Thanks again.

Or they shouldn't have given up a 40 yard return on the rekick.

Says the guy who obviously wasn't there.  After losing the element of surprise because of the ref's screw up, they went back to the pooch kick to avoid SW's speed.  Kick was fair caught at the 40.

Got it.  Yep, y'all got screwed.  HS officiating is pretty bad in general.  Even worse during the playoffs when crews come in from other areas to ref.

At least next year we'll know they're not criminals! Can't say they'll be better refs tho! Lol
