Matching the state's top two teams, No. 1 Cleveland rolled with dominance to a 52-12 win over No. 2 Wilson Central at the Pat Welsh Tullahoma Day of Duals Saturday.

The nationally-ranked Blue Raiders received a major spark from the 170-220 weight class range.

Freshman Ashton Davis, who won the Pan American championship this past summer, started a streak of four straight pin falls. He was followed by Zach Brezna, Dylan Jones and Isaiah Perez with pins.

Jackson Bradford landed an upset over defending state champion Hunter Borders with an 8-6 decision in the 120-pound match.

Grant Lundy flashed his own strength at 145, beating No. 4 Cole Fort in a decision.

While losing by a minor decision to reigning state champion Michael Kramer, CHS senior Wilson Benefield wrestled up at 285, and held his own. Kramer pinned his way to a heavyweight state championship last year in AAA.

The Blue Raiders' lone individual state champion from last year, Austin Sweeney, took a win over a third-ranked wrestler as well.

Arlo Laxton, Garrett Stevenson and Logan Whiteside all won by decisions for Cleveland, while Trae McDaniel's hand was raised via forfeit.

The Blue Raiders also ran away with victories over Lawrence County (59-10) and Clarksville (61-12).

Whiteside beat a pair of ranked wrestlers from both schools, while Davis landed the fastest pin of the day for CHS in 12 seconds.

Cleveland will have a busy upcoming week with a Alumni Match at the Jones Wrestling Center Friday followed by the prestigious Al Miller Cleveland Duals Saturday.

The Blue Raiders have won their home tournament the past two seasons over some of the state's top public and private schools. They pinned the Bears in the last match for a win in 2017 and ran away with the Cleveland Duals last year by beating McCallie.

CHS currently has nine state-ranked wrestlers, which includes two top-ranked matmen along with four No. 2's, a pair of No. 3's and one No. 4.

Bradley Central split the first four matches in its wrestling dual meet at Baylor on Thursday. Then the strength of the host Red Raiders' upperclassmen-filled lineup took over.

Pins from junior Barrett Chambers at 160 pounds, senior Mason Reiniche at 170 and junior Connor Duffy at 182 set a tone and springboarded Baylor to a 53-17 win over the Bears. The Red Raiders also received pins from Garrison Dendy at 132 pounds, Andrew Pace at 145, Matthew Smith at 285 and Trey Bates at 113.

We make it easy for you to keep up with your community

Baylor (5-0) took 10 of the 14 individual matches in the clash of longtime state powers.

"The great thing about tonight was the effort our guys gave," Baylor coach Ben Nelson said. "There were a lot of matches where we were outmanned, but we had guys putting in maximum effort and fighting the whole match. I was as proud of the guys that didn't get a win as much as I was about the guys that went out and got a victory.

"Matches like this are all about finding out what we need to work on," Nelson continued. "We found out a lot tonight, and tomorrow we'll find out even more. That's the great thing about wrestling quality teams."

The dual started at 132 pounds, and after 1:05 of action Baylor earned six points off Dendy's pin. Decision wins from Bradley Central's Sebastian Hernandez and Parker Falls were sprinkled in along with Pace's pin for Baylor before a couple of state champion Red Raiders in Reiniche and Duffy helped push the Bears (11-2) into a 30-7 hole with seven matches remaining.

"We've got some real horses up there in the middle/upper weights, and we really appreciated them getting the ball rolling tonight," Nelson said. "They're good wrestlers, but they're also good kids, which makes our jobs a lot easier. They're very coachable and I don't have anyone who's above the team, so they're all working hard so we can be successful."

After Duffy's pin, freshman David Harper stepped in the circle for the Red Raiders and worked his way to a shutout win at 195 pounds before Bradley's Gavin Sewell did the same in the very next match at 220. From there, Baylor took the last four of five matches in the dual, with Taron Patterson being the lone Bear to win with a pin at 120 pounds.

"Baylor is one of the better teams in the state, if not the best, so I knew coming down here would be tough," Bradley coach Ben Smith said. "We're still trying to figure out who we are, but I think we're a better team than we showed tonight. At the end of the day this match doesn't have bearings on our state-tournament hopes, so an experience like this can only help us get ready for February.

"We've got a chance to see them again on Saturday, so hopefully we can come back with a game plan to get more victories than we saw tonight."

Both teams will be competing in the Cleveland Duals on Saturday at Cleveland High School.

COLLEGE WRESTLING: SIUE signs Tennessee state champion Chase Diehl

December 6, 201

Diehl.jpg

Chase Diehl (left)

SIUE wrestling head coach Jeremy Spates signed Tennessee state champion Chase Diehl (Johnson City, Tenn.) to a national letter of intent to compete with the Cougars next season.

“I’ve known Chase for a few years,” Spates said. “He’s a hard-working kid who likes to be in the wrestling room and the weight room.”

Diehl, tabbed to be a 157- or 165-pounder at the collegiate level, is a two-time state place winner, capturing the state title last season and third in 2017. He enters his senior season at Science Hill High School as a two-time regional champion and 2017 Region Wrestler of the Year.

His team earned a state runner-up finish last season.

He is on track to be in the top five percent of his graduating class, having earned first team All-State NHSCA Academic All-American status.

“Chase is a great student, wrestler and person, the type of athlete every coach wants to coach,” Spates added.

Diehl placed sixth at the 2018 Journeyman Fall Classic at 160 pounds. He also is a four-time Tennessee national team member.

“Chase is going to be a great addition,” Spates said. “When he came for a visit, it really looked like he would be a great fit for the program.”

Diehl is the son of Jared and Martha Diehl and plans to pursue a degree in secondary education at SIUE.

Baylor Nips Cleveland For Duals Championship

Garrison Dendy's 3-1 Decision In Final Match Seals 33-32 Win Over Cleveland

Saturday, December 8, 2018 - by John Hunt

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Al Miller Cleveland Duals has become one of the most competitive wrestling duals tournament in the Southeast in recent years and that tradition continued on Saturday at Cleveland High School’s Raider Arena.

So it’s probably really appropriate that the two best high school teams in the state of Tennessee squared off in the championship finals.

The host Cleveland Blue Raiders were ranked first in this week’s state poll and they lived up to that ranking by rolling through their pool and advancing to the finals with another impressive win over Father Ryan, this time by a 51-12 difference after winning by a wider margin on Friday night.

The Baylor Red Raiders were ranked second, but had looked impressive at a tournament in Tullahoma last weekend before putting a pretty good whipping on the Bradley Bears this past Thursday.

The Red Raiders breezed through their pool like Cleveland and had very little problem beating arch-rival McCallie, Baylor recording eight pins in 10 wins en route to a 54-23 victory over the Blue Tornado.

The championship match between Baylor and Cleveland was a dandy, well worth the price of admission and probably more.

Baylor remained unbeaten with the 33-32 victory in a match where the outcome wasn’t determined until the last weight class, ending Cleveland’s run of two straight championships in this event.

Freshman Garrison Dendy posted a 3-1 decision over Garrett Stevenson and that was the difference as Baylor overcame a 33-18 deficit to win the last four matches and the first-place award for the tournament.

Perhaps the best individual battle took place at 113 pounds where Baylor’s Jackson Bond posted a tense 11-10 win over Cleveland’s Jackson Bradford.

It was a classic where the verdict might have gone either way, but Bond used a reversal and a three-point near-fall in the final period to provide the margin of victory.  Unfortunately, both wrestlers were charged with unsportsmanlike conduct at the end and a team point was deducted from both teams.

Trae Bates had a first-period pin at 120 to get Baylor within 32-26 whihle Noah Hurst posted a 10-1 major decision at 126 to make it even closer and setting the stage for one of the biggest wins in Dendy’s young career.

“I had to clinch the win for us, but the key was staying in good position and not over-wrestling,” the 15-year-old freshman explained later.

That match was scoreless after the opening two minutes while Dendy got the upper hand when Stevenson was penalized for stalling in the second period.  Dendy was in the down position to start the third and made it 3-0 with a reversal midway through before Stevenson escaped at the end for his only point.

Baylor coach Ben Nelson is normally a really laidback individual who rarely shows emotion after a big match.  That wasn’t the case on Saturday as he was giving high fives and hugs to anyone within reach.  It was obvious just how happy he was with the final result.

“That was a great match between two really good teams and we’re really fortunate to come out on top,” he said after his team had improved to 10-0 for the young season.

“These guys have been really motivated to work hard so far and they want to be successful as a team.  They’re really coachable and are buying into what we’re trying to teach.  They seem to get better every day.

“Cleveland has an outstanding team and I’m so proud we could beat them tonight,” Nelson nodded.

Cleveland coach Joey Knox is another one who is basically ho-hum when it comes to showing emotion after a match.  He had no complaints about the effort of his team after losing for the first time after eight straight wins.

“We just have to be ready to wrestle every time we step on the mat.  I feel like we were tonight.  We lost those last two matches to really good kids, but we fought hard the entire way.  There are times when calls just don’t go your way, but that’s just the sport of wrestling.

“I thought Baylor had a good strategy of how to shave some points and they did a better job of that than me, but I was counting points the whole time.  I thought we showed a lot of heart and wrestled great for the most part, but we weren’t able to come out ahead tonight,” he nodded.

Logan Whiteside and Cael Laxton had pins in two of the first three matches while Austin Sweeney had a decision in the fourth for a 15-3 Cleveland lead.

Baylor regained the lead with back-to-back pins from Mason Reiniche and Connor Duffy before David Harper’s 10-4 decision at 195 put the Red Raiders ahead, 18-15.

Cleveland responded with pins from Wilson Benefield and Titus Swafford and a forfeit to Trae McDaniel for the Blue Raiders’ biggest lead, setting the stage for Baylor’s final rally.

Andrew Pace was Baylor’s other winner as he pulled out an 8-4 decision at 145 for his team’s first win.

Baylor’s Reiniche was voted the Outstanding Wrestler by the officials after winning all five of his matches by pin on Saturday.  He’s 10-0 for the season with all pins and he’s also a defending state champ.

He was state runner-up as an eighth grader and again as a sophomore while winning as a freshman and again last year as a junior.  He’s already committed to wrestle at Cornell next fall.

Both teams return to action next Friday with Baylor being one of the favorites in the Bradley Invitational and Cleveland being one of the teams to beat at the McCallie Invitational.

While Baylor beat Cleveland for first place, Father Ryan bounced back to beat McCallie by a 42-26 final in the match for third place.

The Purple Irish, the defending D-II state champs, are now 11-2 with both losses to Cleveland this weekend.

Cleveland beat teams from Gilmer Co., Mountain View and Bartlett to win its pool while Baylor topped Arlington, Heritage and Cass to win its pool.  Father Ryan defeated teams from Pope, Vestavia Hills and Carrolton while McCallie had pool wins over Summit, Bradley and North Gwinnett.

North Hall from Atlanta??? :roflol:North Hall....is north of Gainesville, GA.....65 miles from Atlanta.

FYI.....Woodland is from Cartersville, GA if anyone was curious.

And I see at the Beech tournament that old Collins Hill did fairly well.  Wish they would have had their 285, but I understand he was on a college football visit.  He's a multi time state placer.

Sometimes an official's personal "judgement" may interfere and painfully impact a young man's life on the mat....

This takes it to a whole different level..

Union County continues wrestling dominance

By:

Union County continues its dominance as a wrestling state power in Kentucky. The Braves and winning state titles have been consistent within the schools program. Union County has won the state championship three years in a row.

They are only the second team in 50 years to accomplish that feat. The Braves showed their dominance again in their meet which featured Father Ryan, Anna Jonesboro and Caldwell County.

Head Coach, Robert Ervin, says big time competition will pay off late in the season.

"We just won a 10 way, the guys really dominated the competition. We had 10 guys go undefeated, didn't lose a match, really proud of that. Anytime you wrestle tough competition, you have to fight, it gets those nerves going, you have to win big matches, close matches that gets you ready for that state tournament. When the lights are on you, and you are on center stage, you won't get shook then."

The Braves will compete in the Mater Dei Holiday Classic next week.

UPDATE ON TWO GREAT ONES FROM COLLINSHILL GA HIGH SCHOOL

University of Minnesota head wrestling coach Brandon Eggum has announced the addition of 125-pound, 2017 All-American, Sean Russell to the Golden Gophers. Russell, who has wrestled at Edinboro for the last four seasons, will transfer to the University of Minnesota and have one year of on-mat eligibility remaining.

"We are excited to add Sean to our program, he will be a great addition to our room with the intensity he wrestles with," head coach Brandon Eggum said. "I know he is excited about wrestling in the Big Ten and wrestling the best competition in the country, those are things that really attracted us to him as a person and as a wrestler. He is just flat out a competitor and we are so thrilled to welcome him into the Gopher family."

Russell brings in a career record of 97-24 and is a three-time NCAA qualifier to go along with his NCAA All-American finish in 2017. He has been the champion of the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) each of the past three seasons and is a three-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champion. Russell has been a seeded wrestler at the NCAA Championships twice, and has 8-6 career record at the NCAA Championships.

sean russell@4sean_russell4

Psyched to announce I will be finishing my academic and athletic career at the University of Minnesota ! Thank you so much to my support system for all you have done for me. I would also like to thank @edinborou for a great 4 years.

Hailing from Lawrenceville, Ga., Russell will add a big presence to the Gophers 125-pound position. The Gophers will now return three All-Americans to the 2018-19 team with Russell, Lizak and Tommy Thorn.

Attending Collins Hill High School, Russell's talents have been no surprise. Sean's father George wrestled for Gardner-Webb University while his brother Codi is a current wrestler at Appalachian State. Coming out of high school, Russell was a highly touted recruit being a four-time Georgia state champion and winning a Georgia-record eight straight youth state titles.

Penn State, Ohio State wrestling are again No. 1 and No. 2 in college wrestling power rankings

TIME TO FALL AGAIN FOR WRESTLING

The collegiate wrestling schedule shifts into second gear this week as the annual tournament gatherings in Illinois and Tennessee commence. The Midlands and Southern Scuffle finish 2018 and kick 2019 off with a bang as some heavy hitters are expected to attend both. Will top-ranked Penn State and No. 3 Oklahoma State go head-to-head (with starters) at the Scuffle and will No. 4 Iowa claim yet another Midlands trophy? Perhaps the biggest question as we head toward January is whether everyone can get and stay healthy. Injuries have won the day the first semester; teams have had to shuffle dual lineups weekly.

1 – PENN STATE: Unchallenged so far, the Nittany Lions have outscored four opponents, 177-9. Do the math and it shows PSU has won 37 of 40 individual bouts in dual meets. Up next, head coach Cael Sanderson’s squad competes at the Southern Scuffle, Jan. 1-2, in a field that includes Oklahoma State, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech and Lehigh, among others. Will everyone bring a full complement of starters? If PSU does, that means four top-ranked individuals — Jason Nolf (157), Vincenzo Joseph (165), Mark Hall (174), and Bo Nickal (197) — will take the mat. It’s been a broken record so far this season, but this PSU squad might be better than the 2017 group that won five individual NCAA titles.

2 – OHIO STATE: Off the mat since a Dec. 9 victory over Wisconsin, the Buckeyes don't return until Jan. 6 when a good North Carolina State team visits St. John Arena in Columbus for an ESPN2 national telecast. The key for Tom Ryan’s troops is not what Luke Pletcher (133), Joey McKenna (141), Micah Jordan (149), or Myles Martin (184) does in March, but what the rest of the team does. Two youngsters, 165-pounder Kaleb Romero and heavyweight Chase Singletary, could be key to any championship run.

3 – OKLAHOMA STATE: Reno’s Tournament of Champions provided minimal challengers as the Pokes claimed top honors in seven weight classes. There is a logjam in John Smith’s lineup that includes a trio of All-Americans in Chandler Rogers, Joe Smith, and Jacobe Smith. At Reno last week Joe Smith competed for the first time this season at 174 pounds. Another All-American, Preston Weigel, suited up once in December, pushing Edinboro transfer Dakota Geer up to 197. Somebody will have to sit out with Rogers, Joe Smith, Jacobe Smith, Geer the most likely scenario from 165 through 197 pounds. The Scuffle provides another opportunity to figure some things out. It also gives the Cowboys an up-close look at the No. 1 team in the country.

4 – IOWA: The big December news around Iowa City is Mitch Bowman’s move from 184 down to 174 pounds. Bowman, a senior, is not a reincarnation of Mark Perry, but certainly gives the Hawkeyes a good, veteran option in a lineup that can ill afford to have any holes. Spencer Lee (125), Kaleb Young (157), and Alex Marinelli (165) have been the best this season, with transfer Pat Lugo (149) still trying to find consistency. The health of All-American heavyweight Sam Stoll and the progress of rookie 197-pounder Jacob Warner will depend the level of Iowa's success in March.

RELATED: 5 questions with a returning national champion: Spencer Lee

5 – NORTH CAROLINA STATE: Since arriving in Raleigh, head coach Pat Popolizio has not backed down from any challenge. North Carolina State remained unbeaten in duals with a thrilling 18-17 victory over visiting Nebraska, Dec. 16. In need of a technical fall entering the final bout (133 pounds), Tariq Wilson whipped NU’s Tucker Sjomeling, 18-2, to give the Pack the win. The return of 125-pounder Sean Fausz strengthens the lineup and 184-pounder Nick Reenan, a redshirt a year ago, continues to climb the rankings. This weekend, NC State wrestles in the South Beach Duals in Ft. Lauderdale against Wyoming, Purdue, Utah Valley and Indiana. Circle Jan. 6 … a trip to Columbus awaits.

6 – MICHIGAN: The Wolverines were fifth at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational to start December and will have had nearly a month break before next taking the mat January 3 at Oregon State and January 5 at Arizona State. The dual with the Sun Devils should be very competitive and should provide a Zahid Valencia vs. Myles Amine matchup at 174 pounds (Valencia was champion and Amine third at the 2018 NCAA Championships). It is not a matter of talent in Ann Arbor, but how first-year head coach Sean Bormet’s group competes at the Big Tens and NCAAs in March. 141-pounder Kanen Storr had a strong first semester and could cause problems in the weight class the rest of the way.

7 – MISSOURI: It required some dramatics, but Missouri moved its dual win streak to 26 with a 23-21 victory over Virginia, Dec. 20. Rookie 149-pounder Brock Mauller, now a starter with All-American Grant Leeth lost to injury, picked up a decision, and three-time All-American Daniel Lewis scored a first-period pin in the dual’s final bout to secure victory. Easily the best program in the Mid-American Conference, the Tigers' schedule includes duals with Lehigh, Purdue and Cornell this weekend at the South Beach Duals, and February dates with Arizona State, Oklahoma State and improving Iowa State. There is a good chance Missouri takes a 34-match win streak to Tempe for the Feb. 8 dual.

8 – CORNELL: The addition of Vitali Arujau at 125 pounds and a full-time Yianni Diakomihalis at 141 pounds proved big in Cornell’s 17-14 win at Northern Iowa on Dec. 16. Max Dean upended Drew Foster in the dual and continues his up-and-down 2018-19 campaign. The Big Red face North Dakota State, Wyoming, Missouri and Indiana at the South Beach Duals and open January with a battle against EIWA rival Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. What head coach Rob Koll’s squad looks like in March remains to be seen.

MORE: These teams could unseat Penn State

9 – MINNESOTA: Lehigh and North Carolina await the Gophers in Ft. Lauderdale this weekend. A loss to Oklahoma State is UM’s only blemish first semester with superstar heavyweight Gable Steveson highlighting the first two months. The Big Ten schedule opens with home duals against Rutgers (January 6) and Iowa (January 13) so wrestling fans will see just how good this Gopher team is. UM might not be able to challenge for top honors, but expect a return to the top 10 at the NCAAs.

10 – WISCONSIN: The Badgers won four bouts in a 23-13 loss at No. 2 Ohio State on Dec. 9, and return to the mat this weekend at the Midlands. How’s this for a January docket? At Rutgers, at Penn State and home against Northwestern and Minnesota. There are plenty of great matches in there with Evan Wick and Vincenzo Joseph, two of the best 165-pounders in the land, hopefully squaring off on Jan. 13 inside Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State.

Huffine improved to 13-4 for the season with a 2:07 pin that put the Mocs ahead 17-15 in their win at Edinboro, and he put them ahead again at 16-13 with a 13-1 major decision in an eventual 22-19 loss at Ohio University. He leads UTC with six pins and has a 4.0 grade point average as an accounting major.

If the Southern Scuffle is a good midseason indicator of what the NCAA championships might bring in March, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has at least two wrestlers who are primed to make an impact on the national scene.

Senior Alonzo Allen placed fifth at 125 pounds and junior Chris Debien was sixth at 141 as what is billed as the top in-season collegiate wrestling tournament in the nation came to a close Wednesday evening after two days of competition at McKenzie Arena. Host UTC scored 37.5 points to tie for 14th place in the event, which included representatives from 25 teams and was won by Penn State.

Allen won an exciting fifth-place match, 6-5 over Iowa State's Alex Mackall, after scoring a late point on an escape in the third period. Midway through the second period, the 2018 Southern Conference champion waved his hands to quiet the boisterous home crowd amid a chorus of boos from the Mocs faithful, who believed his opponent was stalling.

"Everything's clicking right now," Allen said. "I'm just keeping my mind focused during the matches. That was just me trying to say, 'Hey y'all, don't worry. I got this.' It's easier for me just to block everything out."

Allen also won arguably the tournament's most exciting match of the day in the consolation quarterfinals as he defeated Stanford's Gabriel Townsell 9-7 in overtime after nine grueling periods.

"I haven't been a part of anything like that since my senior year of high school," Allen said about the marathon match. "I'm just going out there to wrestle all seven minutes, or twelve minutes if I have to. It just feels awesome."

After Debien lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Navy's Nick Gil in the consolation semifinals, the Cleveland High School graduate's fifth-place match started off well. Debien led 3-1 thanks to an early takedown, but his opponent, Lock Haven's Kyle Shoop, took control late in the second period and won 8-3.

"I just have to be more offensive and believe in my shots," said Debien, a SoCon champ two years ago. "I thought I performed pretty well, but this is not where I want to peak; I want to peak in March. I want to get to the NCAA tournament and be an All-American."

Top-ranked Penn State continued its dominance at the Southern Scuffle in record-breaking fashion, winning for the eighth time in the tournament's 15-year history. The Nittany Lions scored a tournament-record 216.5 points, breaking Oklahoma State's mark of 198 set in 2017.

The third-ranked Cowboys finished second with 188.5 points in this year's event.

Three Nittany Lions became part of elite company, with Jason Nolf (157), Mark Hall (174), and Bo Nickal (187) joining 10 other wrestlers as three-time Southern Scuffle champs. Penn State had six champs out of 10 weight classes at this year's event, while Oklahoma State had the other four.

Iowa State was third with 104 points, with Stanford (82.5), Navy (75.5), Lock Haven (71.5), Duke (70), Ohio (54.5), Virginia Tech (48.5) and Cal State-Bakersfield (46.5) rounding out the top 10 in the team standings.

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The impossible has become the inevitable for Tennessee High in the Best of Bristol wrestling meet.

The school that couldn’t win has transformed into the program that can’t be beat in the annual duals showdown for city supremacy as the Vikings secured their seventh straight win at the event Thursday with comfortable triumphs over local rivals Sullivan East (66-18), Virginia High (46-24) and John Battle (52-30).

While Tennessee High has the biggest enrollment among the four schools and is generally the favorite in matchups across all Bristol-area sports clashes, success on the wrestling mat long proved elusive.

In the Best of Bristol’s 22-year history, Tennessee High now has the most overall victories after going 0-for-15 up until 2013, snapping a tie atop the all-time wins list with Battle, which dominated the early years of the event.

Current fifth-year THS head coach Tim Marshall was in his first year as an assistant when the streak began for the Vikings.

“It shows how serious it’s gotten since Tim’s been over it and we’ve brought different coaches in,” said THS senior Logan Ferguson.

“That’s basically what it is at this point, just another trophy to take home, but it’s gotten more challenging as we’ve obviously lost a lot of good seniors over the past few years.”

The Vikings weren’t quite as dominant as in 2018 – when they lost only two contested matches all evening – but they still had plenty of firepower to prevail once again.

“I think the team’s coming together really good this year,” Ferguson said. “Everybody gets along good – it’s a good situation.”

Ferguson wrestled in the first contested match of each of the first two duals for Tennessee High, winning both matches by pin, before ending the night with a forfeit victory to close out the team win for the Vikings over Battle.

“Definitely you’ve got to set the tone if you’re the first match,” Ferguson said. “It has a big determining factor in how other people wrestle.”

Tennessee High indeed followed Ferguson’s lead as eight Vikings turned in unbeaten performances on the night.

Defending state champion Dominic Fields needed just 14 seconds to pin his first opponent at 160 pounds and added a second-period pin against Virginia High before also ending his evening with a forfeit win.

Gavin Hurley (182 pounds, three pins), Perry Roller (113, two pins, one major decision), Reece Nelson (120/126, two pins, one forfeit), Dillon Pendley (138/145, two pins, one forfeit), Xander Harris (120/126, one pin, two forfeits), and Kevin Martin (106, one major decision, two forfeits) were the other THS competitors that wrestled in at least one contested match to go unbeaten.

Roller and Harris are freshmen as the Vikings feature a nice mix of new talent and experienced veterans.

“If it wasn’t for conditioning at practice I don’t think I would have been able to hold in there,” Roller said.

The overall Best of Bristol results were the same for the third straight year as behind Tennessee High came Virginia High (2-1), John Battle (1-2) and Sullivan East (0-3).

Junior Cooper Fayler had a banner night at 220 pounds for the Bearcats, winning all three of his matches via first-period pins.

“I’ve got to thank my coaching staff and my partners every day,” Fayler said. “I’ve been working harder in the wrestling room, weight room, everything – trying to get better.”

Fayler said his victory over Tennessee High’s Tyler Fields, which came via pinfall in 1:04, was a particularly meaningful triumph.

“That was my first match in middle school [against Fields] and it’s great to re-live,” Fayler said. “It’s back and forth [in the head-to-head matches].”

AJ Krumtum (132 pounds), Gage Richard (170) and Travis Williams (285) joined Fayler in being named the top wrestler in their respective weights on the night for the Bearcats.

Battle’s Luke Henegar (145) and East’s Kolby Rutledge (195) also each earned individual honors in their weight class.
