Thanks ... I see 2015 in the headline. How did we do? Oh, I see.

1st Day (Dec 27th) : Whithaven vs BA (Halftime, Final) [55 - 49, BA]

2nd Day (Dec 28): Whitehaven vs Hopkinsville (Halftime, Final) [65 - 42, Da Haven]

Final Day (Dec 29): Whitehaven vs Discovery (Halftime, Final) {60 - 40, Da Haven]

2-1 on the three day tournament. Lost by 6 to the eventual tourny champ BA. Good tounrament. Darius Garland from BA is legit. Whitehaven has some studs as well. Whitehaven will make some post season noise this season for sure in AAA.

Whitehaven will play an undefeated Briarcrest on Tuesday, January 9th and then turn around and play Memphis East in the first district game of the season on Friday, January 12th. That is going to be some BIG TIME must see high scholl basketball going down in the Bluff City next week!

Memphis area boys basketball Dandy Dozen: The season so far

1. East (12-1)

The rundown: The Mustangs fell out of the No. 1 spot nationally when they fell to University School (Fla.) in the final of the City of Palms tournament in Fort Myers, Fla., 77-72. Alex Lomax had 20 points and 10 assists before fouling out and had 14 and 14 in another tournament game.

Upcoming games: Friday at Olive Branch in the Penny Hardaway Hoopfest; Saturday vs. Chicago Simeon at White Station in the Penny Hardaway Hoopfest; Tuesday at White Station.

2. Olive Branch (11-1)

The rundown: It's not just the D.J. Jeffries show at Olive Branch. Guards Kelvin Allen, Joee Cooper, C.J. Owens, Josh Stevenson and Wes Taylor are all formidable and it makes the Quistors extremely balanced.

Upcoming games: Friday vs. East in the Penny Hardaway Hoopfest; Saturday vs. Cordova at White Station in the Penny Hardaway Hoopfest

3. Whitehaven (14-1)

The rundown: In typical Faragi Phillips style, the Tigers are playing strong on the defensive end; the most points they've allowed is 55 which came in a six-point loss to Brentwood Academy last week.

Upcoming games: Saturday vs. Huntingdon (W.Va.) Prep in the Penny Hardaway Hoopfest at White Station; Monday vs. Overton; Tuesday vs. Briarcrest

4. Southwind (15-1)

The rundown: Mark Freeman was named Most Valuable Player as the Jaguars won the championship of the Orleans Bracket at the Jerry Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas over the holidays.

Upcoming games: Friday at Kirby; Tuesday vs. Germantown

5. Briarcrest (18-0)

The rundown: Cedric Henderson was the standout as the Saints won two tournaments over the holidays. He's getting plenty of help from point guard Kennedy Chandler, who is emerging as one of the city's top freshmen.

Upcoming games: Tuesday at Whitehaven

6. Central (11-4)

The rundown: John Anderson Jr., the head coach's son, and Kalin White lead a blue-collar group that is lacking in 5-star prospects but not in chemistry and cohesiveness. Victories over Bolton and Covington highlight the first half of the year.

Upcoming games: Tuesday at Overton

7. Hamilton (11-2)

The rundown: Will Smith is doing good things at his alma mater, which has almost matched the 12 games it won last season. Jordan Johnson, Martrell Brooks, Kevon McMahon and transfer James DeJesus form an excellent nucleus for a team that will push for a trip to state in Class AA.

Upcoming games: Friday at Nashville Pearl-Cohn; Monday vs. Raleigh-Egypt; Tuesday vs. Trezevant

8. Cordova (10-6)

The rundown: Tyler Harris has already put up a few 40-plus games this year and Houston transfer Bruce Guy (6-6 junior) and Kobe Powell have made their presence felt as well. The key going forward will be for others to continue to develop.

Upcoming games: Saturday vs. Olive Branch in the Penny Hardaway Hoopfest at White Station; Tuesday vs. Arlington

9. Bartlett (10-4)

The rundown: The Panthers made a statement by going to Center Hill and defeating the Mustangs but their most impressive effort may have come in defeat, losing to prep school power Chattanooga Hamilton Heights by just two on Dec. 15.

Upcoming games: Friday at Bolton; Tuesday at Kingsbury

10. CBHS (15-3)

The rundown: Considering the talent that's passed through the program in the last few years, 15-3 has to be considered a success at this point in the year. Keep an eye on 6-1 Reese McMullan, another talented freshman.

Upcoming games: Idle

11. Center Hill (13-2)

The rundown: Newton Mealer's Mustangs won nine straight to start the year before losing to Bartlett on Dec. 4. Senior Brien Kimmons averages 24.1 points to lead a high-scoring team that has topped 100 three times already.

Upcoming games: Friday vs. Senatobia; Saturday vs. Anniston (Ala.) Sacred Heart Catholic in the Tangle on the Trail in Pontotoc, Miss.; Tuesday at Brighton

12. MAHS (12-2)

The rundown: The Lions have some good size in Tyrell Partee (6-6) and George Bee (6-5) and an experienced leader in senior point guard Tyler Sawyer. It will be a battle to see who gets out of Memphis in Class A but MAHS is well-equipped.

Upcoming games: Tuesday vs. Manassas

Bubbling under: Covington (13-3); Fayette-Ware (13-4); Douglass (10-1); W.E.B. DuBois A&T (12-2); FACS (12-1); Bolton (10-4); Mitchell (12-7)

Believe it or not, it's 2018.

And with the new year comes a new set of storylines for high school sports in Memphis and Shelby County. Here's a look at some of the individuals and teams who are likely to make news in the next 12 months.

East basketball

It's already been an eventful season for the two-time defending Class AAA state champs. There's much more to come, starting with games against Olive Branch on Friday and Chicago Simeon on Saturday in the Penny Hardaway ARS/Rescue Rooter National Hoopfest presented by Conway Services Heating, Cooling and Plumbing.

From there, Hardaway's team will — barring a huge upset — defend its title in Murfreesboro and await another possible invitation to the Dick's National Championship. And then there's the looming question over the eligibility of Ryan Boyce and James Wiseman which, though settled for now, isn't settled permanently.

Tyler Harris, Cordova basketball

Fellow standout point guards Alex Lomax, Mark Freeman and Taelyr Gatlin all signed during the early period, leaving the high-scoring Harris as the top unsigned local senior in the city. And he played like it in the pre-Christmas portion of the season, averaging 32 points and five assists.

Memphis Class A boys basketball

Mitchell won three straight state titles between 2014-2016 in the smallest public school classification, but the Tigers have moved up to AA. That opens the door for emerging charter school programs like MAHS, MASE and W.E.B. DuBois to make a run to state for the first time, along with a Douglass team that is 10-1 after moving down from AA.

Memphis area high school players of the week

John Varlas, USA TODAY NETWORK – TennesseePublished 11:00 a.m. CT Jan. 3, 2018

Boys basketball

Cedric Henderson, Briarcrest: Thanks in large part to the efforts of Henderson, the Saints enter the new year as the only undefeated team in Shelby County. The 6-5 senior — and son and namesake of the former Memphis Tiger star — averaged 16.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists to win MVP honors at the Briarcrest Christmas Classic and then was named to the all-tournament team as the Saints won five games in four days to take the Mater Dei (Ill.) championship last week. Briarcrest is 18-0 heading into next Tuesday's road game at Whitehaven.

Once again, some of the nation's top high school basketball talent will be in the area this weekend to take part in the Penny Hardaway ARS/Rescue Rooter National Hoopfest presented by Conway Services Heating, Cooling and Plumbing.

Here's a look at what's in store.

When, where: Friday at Olive Branch; Saturday at White Station

Admission: $12 on Friday, $15 on Saturday

The stars: Jaemyn Brakefield, Huntington Prep (6-8 power forward ranked 20th in ESPN's Class of 2020); N'Faly Dante, Sunrise Christian, (6-9 center ranked No. 9 in ESPN's Class of 2020); Darius Garland, Brentwood Academy (Division II-AA Mr. Basketball, ranked 11th in ESPN's Class of 2018, Vanderbilt signee); Malik Hall, Sunrise Christian (6-5 small forward ranked 49th in ESPN's Class of 2019); Cordova's Tyler Harris (5-9 point guard; leads state in scoring at 32 ppg).

D.J. Jeffries, Olive Branch (6-7 small forward ranked 10th in ESPN's Class of 2019); Chandler Lawson, East (6-8 power forward ranked 22nd in ESPN's Class of 2019); Alex Lomax, East (two-time Class AAA Mr. Basketball, signed with Wichita State); Jeremy Roach, Paul VI (6-1 point guard ranked 14th in ESPN's Class of 2020); Brandon Slater, Paul VI, (6-5 small forward ranked 70th in ESPN's Class of 2018, committed to Villanova); James Wiseman, East (6-11, ranked No. 1 ESPN's class of 2019)

Did you know?: Simeon has played in all seven Hoopfests, and the Wolverines have yet to lose. ... One of Olive Branch's standouts is senior guard Kelvin Allen. Allen's father and namesake played at Memphis alongside Penny Hardaway, who will coach East against the Quistors on Friday. ... Brentwood Academy is coached by Hubie Smith, who won 440 games at Bartlett before moving to the Nashville area.

Vanderbilt coach Bryce Drew called it a "defining moment" for his program when Garland signed in November. The state's top-ranked senior chose the Commodores over Kentucky, UCLA and Indiana. ... Jeffries will be going against his cousins Chandler and Johnathan Lawson on Friday. ... Dante is originally from Mali and represented his country at the FIBA under-17 world championships.
