Round 3 Raleigh -Egypt @ Covington

Here is the matchup you have been waiting to see. RE has 12 wins in a row, and Covington has 11.

Both the Score Predictor and the power rankings show RE to be a 3 or 4 point favorite. But, I don't believe that tells the whole story.

Covington started the year 0-1 after a 16-6 loss to Munford. We were in Region 7-3A with three other teams that were ranked in the top 10 in 3A in the state: Milan, Bolivar, and South Gibson County. Nobody gave my Chargers a chance to win that Region, or even to show up.

Here we are, though, and Covington beat all three of those Region opponents on the road in the regular season, then beat Milan a second time tonight.

And, for good measure, our regular season included convincing wins over 5A Brighton (still playing) and 4A Crockett County (still playing).

I think our squad has been vastly underrated all season by everybody except our team, our seniors, and Coach Marty Wheeler. We have fought an uphill battle to get to where we are right now and I believe in our guys.

We may in fact get beat by RE, but if so, they will know that they have been in a football game.

I think the Chargers have a point to prove from the close loss they took from RE Last year at home in the regular season. According to unapproved website  it was a 3 point loss. Hopefully that will be a little motivation for the Chargers along with an opportunity to play in the State Semifinal game. Been a lot of talk about RE running back. He run hard and is fast. Hopefully the Chargers can contain him. Does anyone know if RE have any other weapons on offense?

I really think that Covington will win this game. Was at the game they played last night against Milan, and Covington has 2 or 3 guys that can carry the load no doubt. I know RE has a stud, but you know what you are going to get from them and him. Covington can really beat you many different ways. The QB from covington can really spin it. The pass he threw late in the game, which ended up being the game winner, was unbelievable. Covington passes it just enough to make you respect it, but with the QB they have, it looks like they could throw it around quite a bit more if they need to. Had a couple of tight ends who were open every time the QB would drop back. The running backs covington has really wear on you. I noticed early in the game last night that they weren't really pushing through some of the tackles by Milan, but late in the game they were picking up 4 or 5 yards more a run just because they had worn down the Milan defense.

Will be interesting to see next week. I hope I can make it over to covington again. RE will definitely be ready so Covington will have to bring their A game. I think Covington will be one of the few teams outside of Memphis that will have the athletes to match up with RE and Covington should come away with a 7-10 point victory.

I must admit, I haven't seen RE play this year, and have only seen Covington play against Milan twice and South Gibson once, but I find it hard to believe that RE will have "too much speed" for covington. In the 3 games I've watched them this year, covington has had all the speed you want. I may be wrong and RE may  just blow covington away with speed, but I would bet covington will be the team thats able to get to the edge in the run game, and set the edge on defense.

I have seen both teams play. Covington clearly is the better team. RE is no joke though. They have the best running back I have seen this year. Covington is the best team I have seen this year as a whole.

Hey covington " Stop #3  and you win this contest hands down. " He is handful and it will not be easy but if you can stop him you stop RE.

I appreciate the info. As I recall, Grandberry is pretty hard to stop. I hope that we can keep him from beating us.

    • He may have possibly said that to get the best out of him. Back when I was in school word got out I was going to transfer and Coach Story popped off and ask Coach Wilson in front of the team if Maryville was going to get a jock strap in return on this trade. That got back to me and I got fired up and stayed just to show them up. Now today Coach Story is one of my best friends.
    • Dylan's Dad, I'm glad you replied. I wanted to reply but wasnt willing to take the bait. There were 20 wrestlers on the team. I may be mistaken and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 5 of the 20 attend McCallie right now and one will next year. At most, there are/were 6 kids on that team who attend McC. That leaves 14 other team members who have ZERO affiliation with McC (outside of maybe some friends) who represented our state to the best of their ability and wrestled their butts off that weekend. That weekend was a first for Tennessee and obviously a small step in the right direction for us as a state. Congratulations TEAM TN BLACK!
    • Danny Wilson is the only one that come's to mind but I don't know where he is at now.
    • I am pro coach all day long but there are some knucklehead hires for sure.
    • This is a great question. The retirement seemed a little premature. I do not know the coach personally, but I hope he has found what he is looking for. He is a fine Christian man with a lot of principle and morals about him. I wish him nothing but the best. There are some players in the box for the next coach. This is going to be interesting to see how it plays out.
