Mt. Juliet, Oakland and Whitehaven heading to Powerade 7 on 7 Invitational

After two weeks of the dead period, schools will hit the ground running as the start of football regular season is just a little over a month away and teams will be hitting the 7 on 7 circuit for the next couple of weeks.

Class 6A powerhouse programs Oakland and Whitehaven are heading back to Charlotte this Thursday to again participate in the Powerade 7 on 7 Invitational held at the Matthews Sportsplex.

Oakland participated along with Pearl Cohn in 2016 and Whitehaven played at the Powerade last season and the two schools will be joined in Charlotte by Mt. Juliet who will make their Powerade debut.

The 2018 invitation only tournament will feature 42 teams from 16 different states and the District of Columbia.

“It’s a privilege to be invited back to one of the best ran 7-on-7 tournaments in the nation and the competition is second to none,” Creasy said.

Five defending state champions in Dutch Fork (SC), Highland Springs (VA), Bluefield (WV), Phillips (IL) and Wise (MD) as well as state runner up Woodrow Wilson (NJ) head line the talented field with Oakland and Whitehaven being two of 13 total schools taking part in the tournament that made the semifinal round in the playoffs.

Whitehaven coach Rodney Saulsberry agrees with Creasy and is looking forward to the star studded event.

“It’s a great opportunity for exposure for our program and an excellent chance to compete against some very talented programs from around the country,” Saulsberry said.

Mt. Juliet coach Trey Perry is excited about the event not only for his team but for the three Tennessee teams to represent the Volunteer state.

“We are looking at this first from a team perspective in that we will face some of the best competition in the country and it will surely resonate for us later this fall. Second, individually there is an awesome challenge to show you belong with the elite and third, we want to represent this state, along with two other premier programs in Oakland and Whitehaven, the way Tennessee deserves to be represented,” Perry said.

But the Powerade is far from the only 7 on 7 action this week as the Tennessee Titans, Tennessee Tech and Maryville College will host big 7 on 7 action as well.

Below are 17 different 7 on 7s with teams that will be participating in 7 on 7 action statewide.:

MATTHEWS, NC- It was a hot but productive day for Oakland, Mt. Juliet and Whitehaven here at the Powerade 7 on 7 Invitational.

Oakland, a 2017 Class 6A Semifinalist won the Strawberry Lemonade pool with a 5-1-1 record while Mt. Juliet finished fifth in the Lemon Lime pool and finished with a 3-4 record, while Whitehaven finished fifth in the Mountain Blast pool with a 3-4 record as well.

As luck would have it, Whitehaven and Mt. Juliet will play at 8:30 am Saturday morning in the double elimination tournament while Oakland will play Bishop Sullivan (VA) at 9 am.

Oakland defeated Bishop Sullivan 22-16 in pool play on Friday.

All three Volunteer state teams finished pool play on a high note with some momentum for Saturday as all three won as Oakland beat Kenton (OH) 27-22, Mt. Juliet defeated Hough (NC) 31-12 and Whitehaven outlasted Johns Creek (GA) 23-20.

The Patriots got productive days from quarterback Brevin Linnell (84 for 117 for 21 touchdowns and only one interception), Oklahoma commitment Woodi Washington (7 receiving TDs), Justin Jefferson (6 receiving TDs) while DeArre McDonald intercepted two passes on defense.

“It’s productive because we get to work on getting better with a lot of reps and playing some of best teams in the nation doesn’t hurt and gives you players some confidence going into the season,” coach Oakland Kevin Creasy said.

Mt. Juliet started the day off with a win over Louisville Male 17-10 and despite the 3-4 record got good production from junior wide receiver Malik Bowen and senior quarterback Alvin Mixon on offense and senior defensive back Michael Ruttlen, Cage Ellis and linebacker Jayce Pardue all played well on defense.

“Playing in this setting is really cool because you see a lot of different things and some good players and teams and when your guys make plays it gives them confidence that they belong,” Mt. Juliet coach Trey Perry said.

Whitehaven had a rough start to the morning as they were 0-3 to start the morning losing 31-19 to Vero Beach, (FL), 33-6 to Northwestern (SC) and 32-8 to Hickory Ridge (NC), but was able to finish strong winning three of their last four games after lunch beating Bluefield (WV) 21-19 on a late defensive stop, Hoggard (NC) 27-8 and Johns Creek 23-20.

“This is a chance to build some team cohesion by getting great repetitions in the passing game on both sides of the ball, its also against great competition and exposure to teams from across the country and it’s also a great opportunity to see what we need to work on and to execute offensively and defensively,” Whitehaven coach Rodney Saulsberry said.

The Tigers got productive days from big tight end Cormontae Hamilton, South Carolina commitment Keveon Mullins and Yuri Carpton at wide receiver while juniors Bryson Eason and Martavius French played well defensively.

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
