Here’s a look at the top 10 Memphis-area high school football games for Week 1 of the 2018 season.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Melrose vs. Central

When: Friday (at Crump), 7 p.m.

The teams combined to go 8-14 a season ago, but both tradition-rich programs were playoff participants. This one promises to have the stadium hopping. Central wide receiver Shamar Nash and defensive end Eric Gregory have enrolled at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Defensive tackle Trevis Hopper and defensive back Darin Turner will be key ingredients for first-year coach Major Wright.

Raleigh-Egypt at Arlington

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Gone are 2017 standout running back Kalyn Grandberry at Raleigh-Egypt and quarterback Tate Kolwyck at Arlington, but there is plenty of firepower left on both sidelines. Raleigh-Egypt quarterback Clifton Tunstall (1,421 passing yards and 11 TDs) is sure to build on his 118.4-yards-per-game average. He’ll look for 6-foot-2 Julius Hampton (481 receiving yards). Arlington senior running back Kenny Walker (1,195 yards) and junior defensive back Devin Chandler (four interceptions) will be top contributors for the Tigers.

Overton at Bartlett

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Optimism is abuzz for Overton, which  went 1-9 last season. Coach Edgar Williams will lean heavily on a pair of Lucketts: Terrance (834 rushing yards in 2017) and Dallas, who excels on both sides of the ball. Bartlett coach Tim Haney and his staff will rely on Preston Raines (1,461 yards and 14 TDs) returning at quarterback, while the defense is anchored by junior defensive lineman Tamarious Brown. Bartlett went 5-5 a season ago.

White Station at Briarcrest

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The scoreboard operator could get quite an opening-week workout. The host Saints averaged 36 points a game last year. Richmond commitment Jackson Walker can fling it for Briarcrest after a junior season in which he finished with 2,526 yards and 29 TDs. His main protection will come from highly recruited junior tackle Omari Thomas. Lineman Jaylin Rainey leads White Station. Despite its 5-8 finish in 2017, White Station advanced to the Class 6A quarterfinals.

Olive Branch at Collierville

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

A high-scoring affair might be on display here, too. In a season that ended in the MHSAA Class 5A North Half title game, the Conquistadors opened the Tyler Turner era last fall with a 42-12 home victory over the Dragons. Olive Branch makes the short road trip armed with tons of talent, including senior quarterback Cole Catledge, who will need to be on his toes in order to escape the grasp of Collierville senior defensive star CJ Barnes.

Brighton at Houston

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Coach Robin Jacobs has the visiting Cardinals headed in the right direction. After a 7-4 record two seasons ago, Brighton went 9-5 last fall. The Cardinals averaged 36.4 points a game on their way to a Region 8-5A title. Quarterback Dalton Rushing appears poised to help offensively after the key loss of tailback Lance West. The Mustangs have a proven leader in running back Chris Colebank (1,287 yards, 15 TDs). Kip Frankland anchors an offensive line.

Rosa Fort at Lausanne

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Lausanne is attempting to win its 28th straight, which would tie a Shelby County record. Rosa Fort better come to Memphis with one collective goal, and that’s to try to corral senior tailback Eric Gray. The Michigan commitment rushed for 3,151 yards and 45 touchdowns. Lausanne won last year’s meeting 34-12. Rosa Fort (3-7 in 2017) is led by 6-foot-5, 324-pound offensive guard Demarcus Gordon.

Southwind vs. Mitchell

ÒItÕs my dad, he adopted me my freshmen year of high school,Ó Ayers said about head coach Nathan Cole who is one of the reasons Ayers wanted to return to Mitchell and help coach. The Mitchell Tigers football team practices for the upcoming 2017 season. Brad Vest/The Commercial Appeal

When: Saturday (at Whitehaven), 5:30 p.m.

This Whitehaven Classic showdown pits the Class 5A Jaguars against the Class 2A Tigers. Southwind ended 2017 at 8-4 and a second-round playoff appearance. Defensive tackle Kristian Williams (6-3, 280) is a prized recruit for the Jaguars. Mitchell counters with a pair of top offensive line standouts in Christian Green and Kadarrius Mills.

Ridgeway at MUS

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

These 2017 records weren’t the norm for this pair of Shelby-Metro perennial powers. The visiting Roadrunners went 5-6 overall, but 5-2 in Region 8-5A, which was good enough for the final playoff spot. Senior quarterback Quincy Casey (2,132 yards, 22 TDs) steps onto Stokes Stadium looking to cement himself as one of the city’s top passers. Middle linebacker Antonio Smith is set to flex his muscle against an Owls squad that ended the season at 6-6. A talented MUS defense, one that surrendered just 17.7 points a contest, is led by LSU commitment Maurice Hampton, linebacker Dorian Hopkins and defensive back Dekari Scott.

Fairley at Whitehaven

When: Saturday, 8 p.m.

The Whitehaven Classic nightcap features two teams that haven’t played each other since 2014. The visiting Bulldogs (8-3, 5-0) won Region 8-2A last year, but were eliminated by Adamsville in the opening round of the playoffs. Whitehaven was 11-3 last year and advanced to the Class 6A semifinals. The Tigers’ strength again will be defense, which includes linebackers Bryson Eason and Martavius French. As if that Division I talent weren't enough, East transfer Keveon Mullins and Cormontae Hamilton are committed to South Carolina and Ohio State, respectively.

34 too many for me but I've been checking all week for your post. Best of luck to all.

Come on Cardsfan ... it matters if you start with us at the beginning. This is the hardest part of the season because everyone is undefeated and the sky is the limit. This is one of the most crucial weeks in BGIM.

You just gotta play my man .. you just gotta!

:D
