How are you ginna play 20 to 30 games of football? It said on TV report that this coach in OAK RIDGE used his own money to transport players to games and practices. This teams emphasis was to keep the young men active and out of trouble. It was a middle school team. The name or slogan was cleats not streets. I think there name was the Black Hawks, but not 100% positive. Most high school coaches in sports other than football aren't going to take 50 or so football players and train them for football specific movements/techniques. Same goes for football coaches as to other sports. Football coaches do more of a total workout to football specific movements/techniques. BFS, SQA, physical aggression training, (if the principal and school board don't mind. Then you got to go out back or off campus), ETC. If you're not doing that with your main football core group and LOS players especially Defensive personnel, your getting behind. Why do you think LL of these teams have a single use football field houses, for equipment and coaches offices. A place to hang out? NO. It's to train football players, and we don't share our weight room with any other sport. We are building football players, not training athletes. After basketball, baseball, track, weretling, etc has picked their team, there not going to train/practice anyone else that's not contributing. The don't escort them back to football coach and say, thanks guys, good luck. Football coach has to chase them down. If the non football coach keeps you around, you will be a practice person mop up guy enforcer/trouble maker in basketball. How would you do that in baseball. Take a pitch, to the body? Maybe at HVA? Wrestlle this guy, l don't want my other guy to get hurt, basketball coach says go guard this guy in the paint tough him up do some running, then we will go to weight room and do 3X10 on bench and curls, no squats of PC, don't want my guys hurt or to big, it slows you down. You can skip if you want you did your job for our team in practice. Baseball coach? Go catch BP? How does baseball help football, especially a LOS player? Track, sure stay in shape, do some starts, whatever. Hey Coach could l do my starts on the football field to help my development. Coach says no we run on black top and were not lifting today we got a meet this weekend and l got to get home. Field coach says, let's don't lift, want you fresh to throw this week, rest that sore body part. OK let's do this, go practice BB, BB, WR, TR, whatever, then go to football weight room and get some lifting done. Hey you all be careful and get something done. Maybe football coach will insrtuck you, if he's still around. Put the weights back, of coach and football team will get mad and lock us out. What a mess. Hey non football coach, football coaches were gone we went home after Johnny dropped a 45 on his leg, his dad is mad. Had to go to ER. Next am in principals/ad offic all coaches, everybody pissed off. AD says work together for the school. Ha! High school Football is an arms race especially at the top classes with big rosters. Privates also. What other sports sereve really now is an excuse for little Johnny to get out of winter football workouts. Then the coach has to track them down when he ask the BB,BB,WR,TR coach how's Johnny doing. Johnny who?. Really good, effective off-season football workouts are harder than most other sports in season practices. Wresting might be the exception. No football coach coach is sending his LB, OL, DL, FB's to try out for wrestling. Wrestling coach might try to develop some young tallent or some spare practice people to beat up. I have seen some other sport guys come to football, get BFS, maybe more physical, but never step on field. Don't want to get hurt. Got to go to BB practice now, thanks Football Coach for help me in my other sport. Old days are gone. Small schools, small rosters, sure they have to multiple sport to field a team. Thants the bottom line.
GREYRIDERx
You are right on many points. At most schools that is the way it is. But not at a few that I know of and that should be obvious. As far as the multi-sport issue goes, there are usually a hand full of players that can pull it off. The are generally the most athletic ones.
