What's happened at Jellico?

1AfootballMan started a good thread on 20 July this year revolving around the same question.  Jellico has a current call for the position noted on this site but not on the TSSAA site.  (Jellico High School has an opening for a Head Football Coach. Contact Dr. Donna Singley at [email protected] or Danny Oakes at [email protected] (Posted 11-14-18))  I know of one applicant so far (not that I would know any applicants)  but wonder if the limited announcement indicates maybe there is someone already in mind?  You can likely deduce that this year’ series of unfortunate pre-season events will impact the Blue Devils for a couple of more years as the new Coach develops the team IAW his priorities.  There may also be an unattended consequence with the feeder system as those young athletes look toward deciding to become Blue Devil football student athletes.

I've talked to some people from up there.  Apparently they just don't care about football at all.

The principal is trying to use the opening as an incentive to hire a good Math teacher.  They aren't going to advertise it on any statewide football boards because they don't want someone who'd care more about football than Math test scores.

My sources say the basketball coach has been killing the football team by telling kids and parents that if they play any other sport, they'll get hurt and miss out on a basketball scholarship.

They also say that the principal there won't hire any decent assistant coaches to help their football team, either.  They just hire somebody's buddy whether they know football or not.

The feeder system almost doesn't exist.

The basketball coach thing makes a lot of sense.  Jellico used to be pretty good in football until he got there.  Ever since then the best athletes don't come out.

You think the success Campbell County has had lately hurts em? Maybe football guys would rather go there? If you have a coach from one sport discouraging kids to play another sport they should be fired on the spot! Thats just selfish , dirty , and overall stupid. Statistics show multi sport athletes are not only better but LESS likely to be injured!

Doubt it, that's a pretty good hike from Jellico to CCHS. Not saying it doesn't happen but I'm betting solely for sports is almost unheard of.

There are many articles about multi sport athletes as well as evidence of college recruiters showing interest in the same.   It is true that you could get injured playing other sports however athletes playing multiple sports will have fewer overuse injuries;  better chance to avoid emotional burnout; and not to mention the opportunities to be in different roles  to help with adulting.  A starting Pitcher may be a back up forward on the basketball team exposing the athlete to different perspectives of participation and leadership.

Descent article on NFHS site about it:

BLUF: "Because the majority of our youth athletes can benefit greatly from multi-sport participation, it is important to create a department philosophy and culture that encourages our students to stay involved in activities." https://nfhs.org/articles/the-importance-of-multi-sport-participation/

The evidence for single sport specialization is:

  • 87% of DI women gymnastics had specialized in the sport by the age of 12.
  • 68% of DI men’s soccer players and 62% of DI women’s soccer players were one-sport soccer athletes by 12.
  • 66% of DI men’s tennis players and 75% of DI women’s tennis players specialized in their sport by age 12.
  • 55% of DI men’s ice hockey players specialized in their sport by age 12.

The evidence against single sport specialization is:

  • 71% of DI men’s football players were multisport athletes.
  • 88% of DI men and 83% of DI women who play lacrosse also played other sports.
  • 87% of DI female runners and 91% of DI male runners were multisport athletes.

Specializing or not is a an athletes prerogative. As coaches we should present both sides and assist the student, not sway the student based on bias.  As the later article suggests "Who wouldn’t want the speed of a sprinter with the hand-eye coordination of a baseball player on their team?"
