Not totally sure what you know that I don't but attrition will be the cause of the demise of Maryville Football in the end. The Junior High had 31 out last year and 34 the year before and the number keeps getting smaller. I've heard everything from the parents won't let their kids play because of the head injury scare to their just not interested because they have to many choices today with their time.

I think there are several factors, two of which you have listed.  There are probably more, but the "brain-washing" the public about the head injuries is the biggest factor, I believe.

Another thing I don't care about are all the kids that are being steered towards soccer. Never have been interested or gave a flip about that sport. They should call it like it is 'Football in Panties".

You ever watch some of the good European teams you might change your mind.  Two 45+ minute halfs of constant running with just a 15-20 minute half time break.  Also sliding on iced over fields in shorts that gets you legs and hips cut up.

Also there are MORE head injuries and concussions in 'football' for 98% of the WORLD than you give soccer credit for.

I started watching/playing real English football in 1965 when my Dad got stationed in England.  I was lucky enough to have been in Wimbledon when England beat West Germany in the World Cup in 1966 as one of three Junior players the New York Cosmos was over there trying to recruit.  I was a pretty good 'Keeper' or goalie to some.  I also got to go to my favorite teams junior camp that year at Manchester United.  The Captain of Man U was a man named Bobby Charlton.  Today he is Chairman of the Board and is now SIR Bobby Charlton!  He was also one of the main players on the English team that won the World Cup in 1966 along with players from Man U named Knobby Stiles.  He would put most linebackers to shame with his hits with NO PADS.

I couldn't tell you how many the game of soccer actually takes from the high school football team in numbers but it is a fact that younger kids are being steered that way because of the CTE scare. I drive by the local Parks and Rec fields on Saturday and from an aerial view it would look like an ant farm. There are many factors on attrition right now and I would put soccer in there as one of them. Soccer is one of those sports that don't pull its weight and sucks the blood out of the programs that do.

I like soccer.

I don't see too many linebacker, tight end types on many high school soccer fields. Just think how good the USA could be if our best athletes played Association Football. The parents of the boys and girls teams raised a lot of the funds for the pitch at John Sevier. It's one of the nicer fields around and it's a big field like it should be. All soccer players are required to raise a certain amount before the season in ad/banner sales.

A lot of that is due to the fact that BOYS and GIRLS can play together also.  Especially with the 'little' kids.

When these same Mommies that are pushing it gets some cold hard facts of life with their little darling getting a concussion due to NO head gear, the soccer numbers will fall here.

I got WAY more concussions from playing European football than the American type.

Also a BIG selling factor is the lack of expense for soccer vs American football.  Basically with soccer you got shorts, jock, t-shirt, socks and shin pads.  Your average GOOD football helmet cost more than all the soccer gear put together.

Hey folks I'm just throwing out some of the things that are causing the lack of players all the sudden not going out for football like they used to. This past years football teams senior class was the very first one that really got my attention a couple of years ago when they came in as freshmen. From that point the numbers have went down and down. When somebody made the statement that only 25 were out at the junior high this spring for football that is very concerning. I know we will have a real good team this year but it is after that I'm worried about. Also after many years as a season ticket holder I didn't renew the four tickets this year simply because of the online ordering situation. The tickets actually only went up $5 per ticket but I know that had to have went to pay for the online because that isn't free. Like I said before somebody's buddy up there is in the middle on that one that got their hand greased. The only problem is the season ticket holders got something else greased.
