Sounds to me as if you understand just fine, especially on the last scenario... there's no such thing as "over the back", with no consequential contact, there's no foul. Block/charge calls are the worst... around here any movement constitutes a "block", even if the defender is giving ground and the ball handler runs directly over them. My biggest gripe is with being consistent. ticky-tac touch fouls for two or three trips, then knock downs on screens and hacks across shooting arms are let go. Also, if one team has significantly more fouls per half and the crowd calls attention to it, seems as if it becomes a priority to "even up" the fouls.

Yes even if a defender is standing his ground and the dribbler pushes pass them it is usually a call on the defender. I guess they are just supposed to move out of the way and not guard these days.

Hey I’ve got the solution for all of everyone’s issues with the referees. Since everyone is an expert in the stands and on here why don’t you put on the uniform and right all of these wrongs you are seeing!!!  Become a referee it has to be easy I mean look at these dummies that are doing it. You are way better than they are!!!  It’s the same with coaching. Those morons have no clue what they are doing so those of you that want to make a change should do so. I’ve never missed a call from the stands or the bench and I’m sure you haven’t either. Oh and you actually get paid to do it so there’s all the motivation you should need!!

I don't do because I don't know all the rules and I can admit that. Maybe some of them need to admit that also.

You’re probably just like most of the mommy’s and daddy’s and think you know how to run the team and you know when little Susie  gets fouled. Another know it all parent.

People like OrangeGoober just want to sit in the stands and complain they don’t want actually pick up a whistle and make a difference. They get on websites and attack others under a fictitious name so they can hide. Par for course these days unfortunately.

See you just proved my point. You have no idea if I coached nor any idea if I called any games. You know more than anyone else so you are the one to decide what's good or bad. Your the only one that can complain or offer solutions and if you don't get your way you call people names then you threaten to take the ball and ho home. Well one UC loud mouth dont stop the show. And if what we see out of some of the officials is best you got, then you ain't cutting the mustard hotdog. You 25 years didnt make it better in fact it's worse,  so as far as you are concerned you do not really have much of anything to add to make it better

the problem is there are not enough Referees.  we have 2 weeks left in the season and need help!  all of these knowledgeable fans need to sign up to make the last 2 weeks better.  I refereed a Christmas Tournament this year that used 36 Referees.   Only 3 assignments were to people under 50.  There is a major problem!  in the next 2-3 years you will see High School games cancelled due to lack of bodies to assign to the games.  SO the biggest help you could do is quit posting about how bad your officials are and join the ranks to make them better.   once you get on the court you will then say to yourself " those officials were not as bad as I thought they were."

Yes and no. Around this area, I can tell you the "bad" tendencies of the ref's before the game starts. When you walk into the gym and see who is calling, and know beforehand the type of calls, unprofessional behavior, or in some instances, which team will be favored, there's a problem that could be resolved with some structure. One in particular ( I never do names ) will assert himself as the center of attention in more games than not, and will probably issue more than double the amount of technical fouls than the next high person per year. Another will almost without fail, at some point during the game, completely disengage from the action and argue with some fan(s) for a long period of time, yet rarely ever issues a technical. Others also have "pet" fouls like blocking on a screen... two come to mind, with one calling the contact a blocking foul regardless of position, and ironically, the other will call an offensive foul or push, even if the defender causes contact while moving forward. The structure I spoke of would involve the chain of command. Some of the worst cases of these examples listed have occurred with the official who evaluates the performance of our regions officials in the stands to no avail.

I'm not an official, but have called several junior league games in the past... I know how difficult it is to refrain from reacting to the fans, to call only what you see, and to be in position to see the action. I'm not an expert, and have no desire to be one... having said that, I do know the difference between human error and misinterpretation of rules, and professional and non professional behavior. I'm also not a butcher, but I know a good steak when I see one.

Anyone else have terrible refs this year? It's like they get worse every game.

Based on the continued dropping numbers of officials in all sports they will go back to 2 in the next  year or so.  Not enough younger officials coming in.  Friend of mine who officiates in metro says within 5 years the Tues-Fri will have to change as you will not have enough for even 2 in some areas of the state.  My son is an example, 24 yrs old, played HS basketball.  Says after going to games in the last few years and seeing all the abuse directed at officials no way would he would ever officiate. Lot  of people in his age group feel the same way. What is your solution ?

Raise the pay and hold them accountable. If the money is there, people will be there to take it, that part is simple. The second part would be the hard part... a significant pay increase, with deductions applied from their governing body would be a great start. Some of the calls/behavior within the last week in 14AA would be good examples, but since everyone hasn't witnessed them, a better one would be the non pass interference call in the Saints/Rams game. Allow the coach to protest the call if on tape (I'm assuming that almost everyone films their games), and have it reviewed. Calls grossly missed or non professional behavior could be assigned a deduction in the ref's pay. Just a money would help attract new officials, money could produce a little better effort, and personally, that's all that I'm asking for.

You don’t get it.  It’s not about the money.  My son said he wouldn’t do for $200 a game.  Millennials don’t like verbal abuse.  My high school coach used this example.  Tonight we missed 23 shots, had 15 turnovers, and missed 8 free throws.  Ref made 5 horrible calls, we made 46 mistakes, who had the better night.  You expect perfection from officials but not from teams.

I don't expect perfection. I expect an honest effort and professional behavior. Human error will always happen, and sometimes just the judgement of the official comes into play, and I can readily accept that. You're wrong about the money though. I (like your son) wouldn't consider becoming an official, but your son and myself aren't the only two prospective officials out in the world. I'd never consider crawling around on the bottom of the river picking mussels out of the mud, but when the market was good, lots of people did... when the money went away, they found other jobs.

I do not think anyone expects perfection. Its just impossible. But we do expect and should expect better than what being provided in a lot of cases. I watched a girls and boys game last night. The game was not perfectly called. One call had half the gym scratching their head and the other half saying "huh". BUT the game was consistently called, the officials did not aggressively engage with the fans, they did not over react to a coach questioning a call and the did not make the game about themselves and decide the out come of the game, They ran the floor, were in pretty good position most the entire time and they let the kids play. AND they were fairly younger refs with calm in control demeanor. I do however still resent that TSSAA wants to put an article in the newspapers blaming the fans for poor officials. That's just a  silly stupid contention and its insulting. TSSAA is judge, jury and executioner in everything high school sports related activity in the state but will not take responsibility for the poor officiating but rather make false and empty threats just to do away with the sports themselves. Yes false and empty threats because elected officials would never let it happen.  But blaming the fans and MOMs and Dads for something that is progressively getting worse because TSSAA is telling and allowing some of these loudmouth know it all refs that they the "man" and do what you want, act like you want and say what you want during the games by not demanding better officiating  is a load of crap. I'd like to see more of the guys I saw last night instead of these so called veteran guys who think they are the reason for the game.

Perfectly worded!!! Lots of people take too much offense when fans "gripe" about the officiating. I too have seen plenty of capable officials, and games which were called correctly... the misconception is that the grumbling stems from a dislike of all officials, when in fact the majority of them do a pretty good job. The "problem" is the lack of accountability from the administration for those who are less than adequate.

    • Quick update on Jacob -  Jacob celebrated his 16th birthday at Vanderbilt on Tuesday and has been in decent spirits.  His sense of humor has begun to show as he was visited by many friends.  He is swallowing a lot better now and has eaten some of his favorites (Chik-Fil-A and Five Guys).   He is getting prepared to head to Atlanta to the Shepherd Center first thing tomorrow morning.  His family has been waiting on insurance approval. In case you dont know the Shepherd Center it a world class facility and supposedly one of the best in the country for spinal injury rehab.  Praying for perfect results there. Considering the circumstances, Jacob is in decent spirits.  He has some reflexive movement in his legs which I think is probably a very positive sign.  Don't read too much into that just yet as there is no telling what the real prognosis is... just hopeful that is good thing.  I am really just happy that it seems like he has a punchers chance of getting something back.  He is a strong young man and very determined so I think he will fight as hard as he can in physical therapy while down in Atlanta. More than one of you has asked me about an address to send donations.  I know GoFundMe isn't for everyone.  If you want to go that route, you can make a check to "Blackman Wrestling Club" and we will pass anything received directly to the Kinderdines.   Jacob Kinderdine c/o Blackman Wrestling 4836 Trevino Court Murfreesboro, TN  37128 Also, want to thank everyone who has donated so far.  Jacobs dad will take a month off work and stay in Atlanta with him.  They need to learn how to take care of him and do home therapy work..... and surely Jacob will be glad his dad can be there.  All that could not happen without you all.  Depending on what happens, they will probably end up doing some home remodeling in order to accommodate Jacob at their home.  Thanks again. Here's a pic I lifted from Facebook of Jacob on Oxy talking to his Uncle.  LOL
