So the Giles County kid moved within feet of Columbia Academy's campus and is paying full tuition? Really?

Karl98, I am the father of the kid from Giles County, that you speak of, and yes, we moved feet from Columbia Academy only because their was a waiting list for the apartments they have on campus and yes we are paying full tuition.  My wife and I both work in Pulaski, so having something close, so my son could walk to school, was beneficial. For the record, NO we were not recruited, nor do we receive any financial assistance.

Not that I feel that I need to explain myself to anybody, but since my son is the topic of discussion, I will take the time to explain how we landed at Columbia Academy. First, I grew up in Pulaski, attended Giles County High School and was part of the 1991 basketball team that went 29-2. So, Pulaski is home to me.  We moved back to Pulaski, from Louisville, KY, after my daughter went off to college.  She attended Winston-Salem State University, where she helped lead her team to their 1st and 2nd CIAA Volleyball Championships.  We moved back to Pulaski because I felt that Pulaski would be a better place to raise my son and help develop his basketball skills.  However, the situation at GCHS was soooo bad, I had to find something different.  We visited CA and was blown away.  So, my family made the necessary sacrifices to make it possible for him to attend a great school.  And let me tell you, it is well worth the sacrifice.

We can not be more happy with the spiritual guidance and the great education that he is receiving.  The exposure that he is getting, when it comes to basketball, is something that he would have never received at GCHS, nor did I ever imagine with CA. It's a blessing that we just happen to come at a time when they just happen to have a good basketball team.  Next year will probably be a different story, as far as basketball is concerned, but believe it or not, we didn't come to CA for basketball.  That was just the icing on the cake...and I love cake.

So, don't blame Columbia Academy because they did nothing wrong and made sure we did EVERYTHING by the book. If anything, thank the lack of education and coaching staff at Giles County High School for being so horrible that we had to look elsewhere.

Actually #1 - the Ham kid also lives in Marshall Co who moved to CA 2 years ago.

So you take the Giles Co kid #23, the Santa Fe kid #21 and the Marshall Co kid who are starters and were recruited to come to your school and you have a whole different team. So don’t act like they have been there all along. And that is just the 3 kids I know about. Could be more ??

The good news is next year you won’t have to hide it.  You can openly recruit.

I am the Giles County kid’s father and no we were not recruited. People said that if he goes there and does good, people will swear up and down that he was recruited. No, GCHS was so terrible, we had to find another option. Now, anybody that knows me and are familiar with our situation will tell you. I raised a lot of heck last year about GCHS’s coaching staff and their system. Coach Holt was my coach, when I attended GCHS. I graduated in 1991. He is still coaching the same way he coached back then. I could not have that for my son. He told me “maybe your son is not as good as you think he is...” So, with all of that, plus the mediocre education he was receiving, I had to make a change. I can’t help it that we came at a time that CA just happen to have a good basketball team.

Did you create a profile to say all of that?

Yeah, pretty much.  I had a co-worker advise me that they were talking about my son, on here.  So, yes, I felt I had to set the record straight.

Why? Columbia Academy won the State Tournament within the confines of the rules set forth by the TSSAA. From what I could tell and what I saw they were 10+ points better than everyone.

But you did need to explain yourself. No one on here needs an explanation for what you do with your life. We aren't entitled to it nor do we deserve it. You did what was right for your family. Enjoy the championship and move on and stay from this rabbit hole.

Test scores comparing public and private is a garbage statistic! Public schools test EVERYONE! Public tests SPED ,  low income , single parent , kids who have ZERO support at home , kids who have ZERO aspirations for further education , and kids who didn't eat or sleep the night before. How many of those kids do private schools test? Take the top 10 % of students in both public and private and you wont know the difference in test scores. Thats the same thing that irks me when they say New Guinea or some third world country has higher science scores than the USA. We educate and test everyone, the rest of the world tests their best and brightest only!

What was wrong with my attitude? I didnt say i would send my kid there or that  I approved. You said academics was the reason kids transferred , I said that was not 100% true. You even agreed with me??

Ppl who pay for there kids to go to middle school school is bout ad dumb as a brick why pay for school when school is free that show how much sense you have dumb as a brick

I never said kids transferred because of academics only but that is a big reason for sure. I did say if kids want to go to a better school. they should be able to without any penalty. Look at the gentleman’s post above. He actually moved but stated that he wanted his son to have a better education. That was one of the determining factors.

Hey ding dong I'm on your side! However,  if I was going to argue education I would try to communicate a little more clearly. I'm not 100% sure what you even said.

Why didn't he send his kid to Zion Christian then? They are in the same county close to Giles , they  have a higher overall school grade and send a higher percentage of their students to college...they aren't very good at basketball though.

I don’t know why he didn’t send his kid to Zion Christian? Why don’t you ask him? I don’t understand why anyone cares? He did what he thought was best for his kid. I’m sure one day his son will thank him for doing so, if he hasn’t already.

I don't really care either, I'm just saying MOST people who claim to move schools for education purposes who play sports are USUALLY moving for sports reasons. I don't have a problem with improving your childs situation but not having transfer rules is not the answer. It would be chaos. In my area if it was free transfer a kid would go play football at Maryville transfer to Bearden to play basketball then move to Pigeon Forge and play baseball all in one school year.

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..

    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
