Girls Wrestling in Nooga..or lack thereof

Let's be honest and say the obvious which is Baylor & McCallie are the top two teams in Chattanooga and they are private schools along with being in D2.  I don't see the private schools (D2) sponsoring female wrestling anytime soon so that puts up a major roadblock for female wrestling in Chattanooga.  Now just up the road traveling North you have Cleveland & Bradley Central with the two best teams in D1.  I honestly could see those two schools and possibly other schools in Brandley County placing more emphasis on female wrestling in the near future.  One of the major issues with female wrestling in Tennessee will be finding quality coaching even if schools want to have a team.  Just look at the difficulties schools have finding quality wrestling coaches for the male teams and the talent pool is much deeper.

region 4(Cleveland, Bradley and smaller degree Soddy Daisy) and Baylor McCallie are the top teams in Chattanooga, we have had this discussion before that Cleveland and Bradley aren't Chattanooga but they are suburbs of Chattanooga and tons of people drive from that area to work in downtown Chattanooga. Cleveland high is 34 miles from downtown, Bradley is 32 miles while Wilson Central is 28 miles from Nashville and Arlington is 26 miles from Memphis. These are taken from downtown center. You also have the small school division schools of Hixson and Red Bank that have won state titles recently also.

Now for why it's not that popular here, the costs and coaches and interest plain and simple. I coached the girls one time when Soddy went against Red Bank for the fundraiser. Tons showed up for that because it was a one time thing. We had a ton of students that came and it was a fun little fundraiser. However as a seperate girls division itself there just isnt enough interests in it for the money that would have to go out. So far I havent seen a ton of interest when I see there might be on the largest teams 11-12 girls and the money it takes to have those 11-12 to get a seperate coach plus the practice time and such(please let me know if i am wrong and most practice with their boys teams because those few i know do not and practice on their own time).  The interests just isn't there, no problem with that at all, cannot force them to wrestle, I will say though that years ago a girl from Soddy did want to wrestle and with there being no girls team she practiced with Baylor's club, but I dont think she ever went to wrestle states or anything.

One of the major reasons Chattanooga lacks girls wrestling is also because in Hamilton County they will not pay a girls wrestling coaching  supplement. I coach and have been coaching for a school in Hamilton County for around 10 years now and know for a fact we have interest and would have a team if the county would pay a supplement. Just my 2 cents on the topic.

Even without Chatt having girls wrestling seems like the rest of Tennessee is doing very well. Just went threw flo rankings and Tennessee has 6 girls ranked in the top 20 of their respected weight classes

#15 at 112- Kerra Strevel

#17 at 117- Isabella Badon

#18 at 127- Robin Yunis

#11 at 132- Emma Walker

#12 at 200- Rose Gailah

#20 at 225- Shamia Wells

no inside info here, but my guess is that Bradley & Cleveland don’t want to lose mat time.

Between the HS & kids clubs, their mats stay busy year round (& thus the trophy cases are full). I can’t think of any reason they would want to have to share the mats. I don’t mean that in a selfish way, but when you have 40+ boys in a program & more than that in the kids clubs in the evenings, mat time is precious.

Interesting question posed to me tonight.  Since Chattanooga is the obvious Mecca of TN Wrestling, why are there no girls teams?

With the way girls wrestling is growing in the US, why hasn't Chattanooga gotten on board?

Any ideas?

Also, Cleveland/Bradley County is the Mecca, Chattanooga is a wrestling suburb of Bradley’s county - LOL
