AAA Individual State Preview

With state duals in the rear view, it’s time to look forward to traditional state. Without a copy and paste of rankings, who are the favorites, dark horses, and relative unknowns to look out for the next couple of weekends?

When I have time later this evening, I will take a look and share my thoughts.

It’s never too early. It doesn’t say who are the favorites..at each weight. Just who the guys are you are looking out for. A kid dropping a weight doesn’t make him 100x less of a favorite. If Isbell or Whiteside dropped to 26, they’d still be a favorite. Maybe not THE favorite but still 100% a threat. Same with Borders or Shires going to 106..probably not THE favorite but still a top guy. I feel like p4p the top guys and the favorites to podium don’t change much with what weight they are. We can talk about who the top guys are without them qualifying yet :roflol:

If you are a returning placer and win your region, you usually make it to the third round with ease.  If you don’t, because a highly ranked stud from your region in a higher weight class drops and upsets you, then you may have a much tougher road to travel before you step upon the podium.

The region results will determine the state bracket.  1&4, 2&3, etc ...

I think pin Tn is a good resource.

But descending kids could/will put a wrench into the mix...

All qualifiers are set. Based on the past and the fact that TSSAA presses a button to seed the brackets, I’m guessing they will be out in the next couple of days.

What would it honestly take to do as the NCAA’s are being done and seed the entire thing, 1-32 at every weight? Like actually seed it properly.

Foolish bump 11. Why would someone from tssaa put effort towards something when they can instead create a half baked criteria based on if a person placed before followed by a random number generator done on tiers of how people placed at regionals? Only an unwise tssaa that cares about its athletes would commit such a travesty

I know I know. It’s silly of me to think such a thing could be possible. But one can dream right?

I was told 20+ years ago that the TSSAA did not seed the state tournament due to two main reasons:

1.  You would have a wrestler from high school X that has traveled all over the country wrestling and would have a record of 35-6 but won the top 2 tournaments in Tennessee being seeded against a wrestler from high school Z that had a record of 28-0 but only won small tournaments that didn't have any of the top kids attending.  The TSSAA didn't want to upset school Z and award their wrestler the #3 seed or even #2 seed.

2.  The TSSAA at the time was concerned about litigation from families due to seeding.  I was told that the TSSAA wanted to limit their legal exposure.

Now I do ask the question as to who would seed the tournament if the TSSAA decided to go in that direction?  Let's be honest and say the TSSAA has no one on staff that I would want seeding the tournament.  Would you select a committee based on people from all areas of the state much like the NCAA uses?  Honestly with the TSSAA having separated the state tournament into D1AAA, D2 & D1A-AA there is no need for seeding with the competition so watered down.  Now if you want to place everyone back together you may want to look at seeding the tournament.

So you have a seeding meeting like any other tourney. I would bet that most coaches who care at all would make sure they’re there and get the brackets drawn as best as possible.

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
