Tennessee Football........

Pros

Top Tier teams can COMPETE with others across the south region.

Great Coaches across the State.

High talent level all over West/ Middle/ East TN (in this order)

Small communities that CARE about their School/ Community!

Great Area to live, coach, and rise a family  (have all 4 seasons)

Cons

Pay Scale low (Except private/city schools)

Expectations are very low in most county's

Hearing Processes (to much of what have you done or who you know) "Take Chances on 1st year Guys"

Water down (Playoffs and Districts)

Not enough funding for Football to be a priority at most places

TSSAA whole system with other sports makes no sense

Programs that should be top tiers are Mediocrity (Year in Year Out)

Tons of Pros and Cons to add. However, other states in the south (Georgia) do things right. School Systems care about sports. Because we can all agree on, football drives a program. It can be good or bad! Depending on who is in the leadership roles.

bluedevil58,

According to TSSAA enrollment numbers we have 8 HS that would play in Texas largest class. Bartlett, Blackman, Cookeville, Collierville, D-B, Mt. Juliet, Oakland, Stewarts Creek all have 2100+ students according to the latest TSSAA enrollment figures.

You're right.  The cutoff for 6A in Texas is 2190.  We actually have 9 schools who'd fall into that category.  D-B, Science Hill, and the schools you mentioned would fit according to the TSSAA figures from 2018.  I had thought D-B was down to about 2000 or so, but I was wrong.

I really like how Texas does their classification system, actually.  I wish the TSSAA would look at it and learn some things.  The UIL, which is the closest thing that Texas has to the TSSAA, has the following classes:

6A: over 2190 (this would only be those 9 schools in TN, but Texas has 142 in this class)

5A Div. 1: 1840-2189 (this is the bulk of Tennessee's 6A)

5A Div 2.: 1150-1839 (this is the bulk of Tennessee's 5A)

4A Div 1: 790-1149 (Greeneville, most 4A schools, and the smaller 5A would be here)

4A Div 2: 505-789 (this is most 3A schools in TN)

3A Div 1: 335-504 (this is the larger 1A schools in TN and most 2A)

3A Div 2: 225-334 (this is the majority of Tennessee's 1A class)

2A Div 1: 161.5-224 (these are the smaller of Tennesee's 1A football class)

2A Div 2: 105-161.4 (I think this catches all the 1A football schools in Tennessee)

1A Div 1: 55.5-104.9 (6 man football!--we don't have that in Tennessee)

1A Div 2: 55 and under (6 man football, too)

Tennessee just doesn't have enough HS to support a classication system like that, but what I like about is that the numbers are drawn sensibly.  Rather than just dividing the enrollment list into even 6ths and lumping schools into conferences with opponents who are 2 and sometimes even 3 times their size in 1A and 6A, class 4A and below vary from 69 schools to 105 and 5A Div. 1 and 2 have 127 and 125, respectively, to go with the 142 in the largest class.

That is correct.  The first playoff game I saw was 1983 in the old Astrodome.  I could be wrong but I think Houston Yates was one of the teams and possibly Odessa Permian was the opponent. I think attendance was in the 40,000 range and it was not for the state championship.  We had been at Rice for 1 week and had been on the road recruiting and we all got back in town on Friday afternoon and went to the game.  Paid our own way so it was legal. I remember watching film at Richardson HS in Dallas. The coach was Winston Duke and he advised me to buy some boots.  I wore a pair the next week when I visited!  I didn't know UIL played by college rules at that time so it was different watching a HS game played by college rules.  Recruited Texas for 7 years, Metroplex and west Texas.  Apples and oranges when comparing Tennessee to Texas is an understatement.

Texas Football is Bigger NO QUESTION about that.

1) Population (6 Cities in top 25)

2) Oil Money

3)  Expectations ( Winning State Titles)  "more parody"

4) Coaching/ Teacher salary (Starting Pay $49,750) " Not including Head Coaching Supplements"

HInts why Texas is Bigger. Also they have over 1,200 school districts which is the most in the Nation.

Look at Population #s alone

6 total cities in the US are more populated Than TN

#4 Houston #9 Dallas #7 San Antonio#11 Austin# 16 Fort Worth #20 EL Paso

#24 Memphis/ #25 Nashville

Here are Oklahoma's numbers for comparison:

Class 2A – Next largest 64 football playing schools

Classes A –Remaining 11-man football playing schools

Classes B & C –The remaining eight-man football playing schools to total 80 make up Class B, the smallest 32 eight-man football playing schools make up Class C

I know 7 v 7 is different but Oakland beat a team out of Tyler Texas 37 2 last week in North Carolina.

Depending on the area of Texas I could easily see Oakland going 8-2 or 7-3 playing in Texas.  If they had to play Lake Travis, Allen or Southlake it could get ugly.  Keep in mind you have schools in Texas with 5000 students.  Communities would rather have a freshman/sophomore campus and a campus for the junior/seniors down the street.  This is done because they want the talent pool at the schools to remain large for athletics.

That's crazy if you think about it... 5,000 kids

I wish Gallatin would have done this years ago and Station Camp would have been nonexistent!
