Trust me I am by no means defending Cockmans actions. When the ref hits you for a team point that means shut up and do what your supposed to do and get off the mat. Which he did not do, but I do agree that both kids should have been tossed and not just one.

it really burns me both were not tossed if one was to be tossed, especially since that kid ended up placing 5th because of it all! I have had kids do that in wrestling when they lose because they now have less to lose and I have had it happen in soccer as both a player, coach and referee, team losing by 3-4 goals short time left and trying to foul the crap out of people so when they retaliate they end up getting a card and possibly red-carded and lost for that game and sometimes their next game :(

Just watched the tape and this is disgusting.  Please tell me the Cleveland wrestler was ejected from the tournament.  If not, the official should be ejected as this was intentional on multiple occasions.  Now I know what the uproar was all about.  I missed it as I was watching another match.

Wow.  That is all I can say.

I wonder what the Cleveland fans are having to say about this after the way their team performed.  Cleveland looked dominant this weekend.  Sad to see this from one of their wrestlers.

Wow...looks like Cleveland was especially salty this weekend.

Maybe we can start tracking saltiness points at future state tournaments and list it right up there with the team points standings.  Hand out a Saltine cracker award when it's all over with.  Like the Razzies.

First let me state I am Mason's Dad, and my perspective is obviously biased without trying. I do not know Parker Peterson at all. I couldn't tell you what kind of a young man he is....good or bad. However, I can say that during competition especially one that gets heated to the point referee(s) lose control, an athlete, coach and fan can get caught up in the situation and act/react in unfavorable ways and be judged by others only on those actions.

Last nights finals match was one of those matches. Both Mason and Parker appeared to get caught up in the moment and lose sight of what they were there to do...….and that's Wrestle. Parker appeared to be going backwards and/or circling the edge of the mat the entire 1st period. This of course got the Baylor fans excited and wanting a stalling caution. The strategy/style frustrated Mason of course because in his mind he had predetermined the outcome with him getting the early fall and ending his final High School State Tournament on a good note. The first head butt (rather intentional or incidental) really got the Baylor Fans going. And from the stands (which is where I sat) it honestly looked pretty bad. I could tell Mason seemed dazed and could only hope he keep himself in check on focus on the big picture. Unfortunately he had a momentary lapse and offered up a little shove at the end of the period to let Parker know who be was on the mat with. This in turn simply added fuel to the fire and got the Father Ryan faithful up in arms.

From here it just continued to escalate with (in my opinion) more brawling than wrestling. I'm all for hard hand fighting and aggressive wrestling to gain favorable position for a scoring opportunity. However, I didn't see really many attempts by parker to score only banging to keep Mason off balance and not in a good position to score. On the flip side Mason played into it and banged back trying to dig an underhook or utilize a hard snap, but not follow it up with solid leg attacks. Unfortunately for Mason he came out on the losing end of the brawl and suffered a couple more hard shots to face/head. Enough of them I feared the ref was going to stop the match due to Mason not fit to continue. This outcome would have most definitely been a tragic end to pretty darn good high school career.

Mason being hit with a stall call when working from top while parker smartly controlled his hands, again grew frustrated in addition to being dazed from repeated blows to the head/face, and determined against his coaches instructions (which were to simply ride him out and finish the match and limit the opportunity for more blows to the head) that he was going to let parker up and take him down. He did that, and got that crowd (both sides) more fired up.

The match ended and the score was 10-2 in favor of Mason. Neither Mason or Parker were happy with the results. I personally didn't see either wrestler do any gestures or unsportsmanlike actions after the match. I observed Mason recognize his cheering fans in an appreciative manner and give the freight train horn tug (that all of the Baylor finalists had done). I certainly observed him go shake Pat Simpsons hand as well as the other coaches. Now, I am uncertain if Coach Ben Nelson didn't see the original handshake or just didn't think one was enough but he made Mason go shake their hands again. I did notice Mason did not shake Parkers hand again as he offered one up as they exited the mat.

What happens next is a blur to me. I watched Mason leave the mat and go toward the fence where he was abruptly stopped by someone (which I was told later was a brother of an MBA wrestler...I wont name them), and that person blurted out derogatory comments directly at and to Mason along with some other dissatisfied fans including one on the Father Ryan coaching staff (not the two in the corner). This is when Mason reacted and completely lost control and had to be escorted back to refs lounge by another member of Baylor's coaching staff. I missed a lot of this as I was in the process of leaving my seat in the stands to get down there to be at my son's side and eliminate any further reactions.

Upon my arrival in the refs lounge, Mason was lying on his back. The bridge of his nose was bloody with tape on it, his cheek bone was cut and bleeding, and mouth was full of blood making all of his front teeth red. He was distraught and utterly confused as to why and how so many people hated him. He couldn't comprehend that grown individuals could be so hostile hanging over the railing yelling out awful things (things that I cannot repeat here) especially from a coach that he thought liked/respected him.

The saddest thing for me is I had no good response for him. There is not a good response to that question. Somebody else commented that the late Coach Jim Morgan wouldn't have tolerated his wrestler acting in such unsportsmanlike manner is correct, and neither would Coach Ben Nelson or any other Baylor coach on the staff. I personally don't think either Mason or Parker demonstrated unsportsmanlike manners while on the mat. I honestly don't think ill of Parker either. I truly think he simply had a game plan to survive against Mason early and still be there at the end with a chance to win. His strategy did come across as stalling for sure, and his aggressiveness did lend to pretty severe blows to Mason's head.

Its unfortunate and Mason most certainly did not want this experience for his last showing at the Tennessee State Tournament where he is a 5 time finalist and 3 time Champion. I hope and will do my best to turn this weird and terribly unfortunate incident into a positive learning experience for Mason moving forward.

And ScottOsters, I am absolutely positive that is exactly what Coach Jim Morgan would want!!

Great post and perspective. Thanks for sharing. And congrats to Mason. And sorry, dad, but I do not know who Jim Morgan is.  All the best to you and your son in the future.

As a recent former wrestler i can say there is no excuse for what the cleveland kid did. Especially the last match of your senior year thats the worst way to injure your legacy. Same goes for cockman. If someone lashes out cause their losing you have to just move on and get off the mat. I feel bad both of them ended their year that way. Hopefully their teammates can learn from this.

What happened after the Reiniche match was shameful.  On the mat the match was a bit chippy. The Father Ryan wrestler was called for a head butt, and both wrestlers were very aggressive up high.

Reiniche won the hard fought match handily with takedowns, and the championship was well deserved.

His actions and reactions after the match were well below championship caliber, and should have been addressed right there on the mat. The sportsmanship was abhorrent. He made a veiled attempt to shake the opposing coaches hands by forcefully slapping at their forearms. A proper handshake was never offered whatsoever.  Baylor coach Nelson corrected him...he turned back, offered a half-hearted handshake, then turned and taunted opposing fans and alumni near the mat exit.

I wish him all the best and continued success at Cornell, including some lessons in discipline, respect and decorum. I'm sure he's a better man than evidenced by last night's post-match display.

The 170 Match between Reniche and Peterson, was very chippy and competitive. It is unfortunate that the only attention that came from a good wrestling match is the after math. Neither wrestler acted in a perfect manner, but that is no excuse for what happened afterwards. Shame on the parents from Father Ryan who were leaning over rails and screaming at a KID. That is a poor reflection of a great program ran by an en even better head coach.

wow, that was absolutely disgusting to watch!

As far as the Cockman match, he let his emotions get the best of him, all he had to do was walk to the center, shake hands and walk off, it isnt really all that hard or difficult to do and instead he ran his mouth AND tossed his headgear as well as clapped his hands over his head which is to me taunting. Now if he wanted to clap after he won all means do it, but when you go over your head to bring attention to yourself that has no place in wrestling or on the mat itself, especially when one wins! As i was always taught win or lose with grace and humility.  I watched a few video's of it and the push was barely anything(although i think BW kid should have also been DQ'd, so all he had to do was get up, shake hands and get ready for the semi's, it's no one's fault but his own that he didnt. I hate it for him as I am a fan of Dalton, however keep the emotions in check and just wrestle.

I’ve watched 100s of daltons matches and he has always clapped just like he did after matches! Plain and simple some refs make it all about themselves and there are posts about it every year! The state needs to do a better job of also having more officials from different parts of the state call the tournament instead of it always being Nashville and chatt officials! There wasn’t 1 official from West Tennessee that was represented and the 2 people that did call the state that now live in Memphis were previous Nashville officials so that doesn’t count! Same thing over the almost 20 years I’ve been part of it!

I'm sure that someone will whine about the following statement but I have seen the Baylor wrestler get "chippy" on many occasions.  Especially in close matches or when he is losing or loses.  I imagine they will curtail that business at the next level.  And still no excuse for people to cuss at him from the stands as I heard happened.

As far as the Arlington wrestler is concerned, the clapping had nothing to do with anything.  He received two unsportsmanlike penalties prior to the clapping.  I think two unsportsmanlike penalties by the wrestler in the same match equals disqualification no matter the circumstances.

well, glad you have, but if i was his coach he would have ran after the first one, that is in the book for an infraction and someone should have told him to celebrate like you have been there before! After you win a state title maybe, but this was a quarters match and there was still work to be done! Now if it hadnt been called before thats on the officials that have reffed his matches prior, but it is a stupid thing to do and should have been addressed forever ago but wasnt. So just because it was allowed prior doesnt mean it should be now and between the running of the mouth AND his headgear being throw(again doesnt matter how or why its thrown per the rulebook) he was penalized appropriately. Hate that it ended his high school career but it shouldnt have even came to that.

    • He resigned smh, and have you ever heard of charged but not convicted. Some people in this county baffle me with their need to slander others. Have you asked any of the 30+ parents that signed a petition to get him reinstated at the board meeting this week how they feel about this? Just let it play out, at the end of the day the only people that will bring TC back are the ones that know what its about at its core.    People hate losing and they aren't used to it at TC. I for 1, and I'm sure others too, understand having a dip in talent and not being able to compete for a state title every year. But in the past, TC teams have outworked more talented teams, they didn't continuously lose the turnover battle, they didn't commit 8+ penalties in several games each season, and I believe several of the folks in town that want Blake out feel as if he is neglecting the history of the program. This is from a source that used to be extremely close to the program (not me lol), Blake gets out of school midday and the players show up and there is no practice plan or itinerary.  I also understand those that are on team Blake, when he has loads of talent, he wins. He does know football and he is a tremendous DC, and if the rumors are true then he will do great things. As for the board member issue, it is what it is, everyone that's true to the county know that and nothing has changed. I agree though that they should strive to make the facilities as good as we can. And as far as potential candidates, I agree there is very few options. West, Vetetoe (yes I know), and couple others that could have some interest. Whatever happens is massive for the program during a pivotal time before the next big wave of stars make their way through.
    • McKenzie had no trouble with Huntingdon.
    • Has BA landed any cornfed cowboys to block up front?
    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
