How would you define this? Is Greenback rural? I know it's small.

While I said rural it would be any school with very small enrollment numbers.  For instance I am not sure that any of the urban areas have public schools with less than 500 students that are not charter or magnet schools.

Lookout Valley and Sale Creek in Hamilton County. They're close enough to draw from other nearby schools but by looking at them you couldn't tell they're considered Chattanooga schools. Tyner is usually near a 500 student number in Chattanooga. Several Memphis schools have dwindling numbers but I'm not sure how many have been redone as "magnets."

Just went back and looked at attendance for all high schools in Tennessee.  The total number of schools is 431 with many that do not play football, I stated earlier, I believed it was 340 schools that played football.  The 431 is an accurate figure that came directly from TSSAA.

How do you find those sheppy?

BarneySox2007,

The attendance figure for every single school in the state was sent to me from the TSSAA.  Now it doesn't clarify the exact number of football playing schools so I just added up the numbers for each classification. I didn't account for any new schools, i.e. Rockvale.

* More entertainment options than ever. Unless you have kids or other relatives playing, high school football is simply a form of entertainment and there's a lot of competition for your entertainment dollars.

* Consolidated schools have taken away some great local rivalries and created in some cases longer travel plans than people want to put forth the effort to make.

It's not just a TSSAA problem. We watch a lot of high school football across the Southeast and while many of the community based schools will still pack the stands, there's a lot more that struggle to make anything at the gate.

100 percent spot-on.

The same problem exists in Ohio. High school football has always been huge there, but attendance is way down. This problem was absolutely inevitable. Rural areas aside, there are just so many other forms of entertainment now.

Less kids play so less people attend.  It's no rocket science guys.  Read this article by Forbes and you'll realize the TSSAA and their multi-classification system is not the problem.

Thanks for providing the article.  Good read.  I think after reading the article one has to wonder if all the glory that past players received in the towns where they played, tied to their off the field actions and lack of classroom desire, has led to the decline as well.  We all know the stories of Johnny 5 star who has 20 offers to play on Saturday but couldn’t spell the word Saturday if you spotted him Satur.  I grew up in Gallatins hey day.  The stadium was packed on both sides with Green Wave fans.  After I graduated I had to sit on the East side of the stadium because there just weren’t any seats to have on the home side.  Now when I look around the home side is hardly ever full and a sprinkling of fans on the visitors side.  As I travel to Away games I hardly ever see a packed stadium.  I guess it really is a different day.
