The school board member that was quoted as saying he "disagrees with that" regarding it was ok for good students to transfer in, was later quoted as saying "well who gives a rat's, ..before trailing off" and even admitted that the tuition students help raise academic scores, after he was complaining that they were not putting a priority on academics, did not sound professional, rational or logical in the least. Several friends of mine that are not from Blount county read the article. Especially with the two board members having the same last name, almost all of them made the comment that this seemed personal not professional and had nothing to do with academic concerns or the best interest of the children. A logical , inquisitive person can infer pretty quickly what the real issue is. Some folks can't handle competition. I agree. Board members made several comments that contradicted themselves.

That’s not the whole board. As far as we know the other members could Ben perfectly happy with the way things are. People shouldn’t assume that the 2 outspoken board members are a reflection of the way the entire board feels. Generally speaking, when members of any organized board of control raise controversial issues in this manner, they are in the minority. There's a "chain of command" in place to handle internal issues without being controversial or even making them public at all, even in a formal board meeting. If the board (as a whole, or even a majority), or the Director felt that this was an issue, it would have been handled behind closed doors and this discussion would be in the past tense about whatever changes had been made. JohnnyLawrence
I don’t see this as a Rankin issue. This is a Bell issue. More about who he didn’t hire or interview for the vacancy that were qualified, but he “didn’t know him, so we didn’t talk to him.” That’s not a good look. It just so happens that this guy apparently met the criteria that Brian was looking for and was probably a done deal before they ever left Sevier Co. Its not going to matter in the long run. Both Bell and GR already have one foot out the door. As a side note: I heard the next board meeting, since Alcoa has changed its brand to Arconic, that the ACSB will make a motion to rename the school to Bledsoe-Marsh Academy of Technology. Any truth to this rumor?

I'm not sure you're vetted with the pickup truck crowd down Morganton Road. 100% not vetted. Lost Old Dad
If 'grades' are REALLY important, then take a look at the teams average vs the same number of other kids in the school. I am willing to bet the teams average is LOWER. Rankin has never been a big promoter of grades for his players. As long as they remained eligible is all that mattered to him. Gary Rankin's almost total lack of caring about the kids grades started my first battle with him when my son played for him at R'dale. I insisted my son maintain a B average. Rankin's comment was just stay ELIGIBLE!

Rankin's comment was just stay ELIGIBLE! Alcoa has 7 senior offensive linemen. 3 have GPAs over 4.0 and 2 have GPAs over 3.5. I think that's pretty good. If I remember correctly, the year before Rankin came to Alcoa less than 5 players had a GPA of over 3.5, this year there had to be at least 25. BarneySox2007
The New Word of the Day at Alcoa is Bishop. Mr. Rankin was asking around yesterday why somebody didn't shut that Bishop the other night.
