A school board member seemed to imply grades and scores are high in large part due to tuition students. Individual scores aren’t available and shouldn’t be but a breakdown of zoned and tuitions should be to see if this board member can back up those claims.

Alcoa places in the top five in state academically year after year. You  don't do that by pulling 80 - 85% resident enrollment up by the remaining 15 - 20% tuition students. The academic requirement for tuition students is maintain 3.0 GPA. That's NOT going to "mask" or pull up the average!

We can call this anything we want but the signs are showing that you have a school board who makes the decisions are POed. The story basically was saying you have a coach running rough shot over the place while the principal pretty much agreed. I'm sure the principal would like to go out his last year without having to mess with this but you can mark this down the new one will make this a priority and Mr. Rankin may see his days numbered. We live in a new world folks and when the parents start harassing the school board members then crap hits the fan. You have a school board over there with familiar long time family ties to that school and if their not afraid to poke the bear like they did at that meeting you can bet they will hire a new principal that won't stand down. I see Mr. Rankin walking on eggshells from this point forward which is something he is not used to and wouldn't be surprised if he cuts out after this year. We're living in a new world folks where the millennials are starting to run the place and a lot of us old timers are really going to hate. I've watched Maryville change so much since I've been out I can barely stand to go there anymore if it makes any of my friends from Alcoa feel any better.

Barney you say “signs show the board is poed”. Remember it’s only 2 members. That’s not the whole board. As far as we know the other members could Ben perfectly happy with the way things are. People shouldn’t assume that the 2 outspoken board members are a reflection of the way the entire board feels.

You've nailed it again BPM... you get to make the rules yet complain about the results, even though academics and athletics are both thriving? Once you clear away all the misguided opinions and just stick with facts and figures, this looks kind of silly to me.

You know when I read this article yesterday I was thinking what your two cents would be on this. However in the back of my mind I already knew what your perspective would be.

Somebody help me understand this. The Clayton’s make the assertion that the tuition students pull the weight academically for the rest of the students. Also that Alcoa let’s in athletes regardless of who they are and that places an emphasis on athletics rather than academics. Here is the part I don’t understand. The athletes that transfer in would be tuition students correct?  Do they not consider them to part of the group they say pulls the weight academically. I mean they do have to have and maintain a 3.0 gpa according to their own board policy. And if they are not a tuition student that means they are a resident and they have to enroll the student. Sounds like these two board members are full of bologna.

    • Well, your Big Western Hunt better turn up some Zebras to come graze on the Stones to make the jungle gametime ready again and make sure the plumber bros. still will come service the facilities at the Mecca. I hope your weekend is Fowl. Tell Rip hello from the Five Oh. Maybe the Gravedigger will catch a ride with Alphaniner on a flyover soon to BNA.
    • It’s not hearsay, just patently false. As one of those young coaches he apparently “ran off”, coach never once ridiculed or degraded anyone. Sure he challenged kids and coached them very hard,  but we have different definitions of you call that degrading. Coach Hammontree changed my life when he gave me the chance to work for him. I learned more about being a man and caring for the people around me in 4 years working for him than I did in 20 years of my life. No one sacrificed more than he did. I left Heritage because I felt there would never be the support necessary to help the program succeed. I’m tired of hearing people drag others down especially those they truly don’t know. Coach has moved on and a new coach is there. Just let the man live and root for the team.
    • Waiting on the Great One.   White Horse and Rip have a big weekend in the woods, and the Sheriff is working the overtime here.      Turkey season awaits…..Big Gobblers everywhere.
