I just talked to one of my coaching friends and he said basketball practice can't start until November 4th this year. This is the craziest thing I have ever heard!! They should be able to start October 15th. Give them at least 3 weeks of practice before the first scrimmage and Jamboree dates. Come on TSSAA!!! You have to change this!!!  Where You At?

Changes from year to year but it's always about the same. 2 weeks or so before the first game date.

Nov 1 is the last regular season football game for most schools.

This isn't really new. This kind of calendar has been in place for 20 years. I agree it's ridiculous.

I guess i really didn't pay attention but when he said November 4th I was like you gotta be kidding me. Talk about unfair!!! This may be motivation to bend the rule.

Plenty of people skirt this rule in different ways.

I graduated in 98 and we had no real rules regarding practice. Then in 1999 some rules came down and I feel like the quality of basketball went down slowly. Kids in cities had access to gyms in different aspects: YMCAs, community centers, church gyms. However, rural areas of the state suffered because the only gym is at the school and the TSSAA limited access to that.

I graduated in 91 and can remember practice starting on October the 21st at least one year. First game was second week of November.

I never remember any start date to practice. The day our season ended we worked out through summer 5 days a week in the morning and 3 nights a week open gym. We never took days off.

Where did you play?

    • TSSAA restrictions for hiring non-faculty coaches have been removed for over a year at this point. In the past a non-faculty person had to be "grandfathered" by being an assistant coach for five years, being fingerprinted, and having a background check run per TSSAA rules... since those were rescinded, the board of directors for the school district are responsible for any/all restrictions on hiring non-faculty personnel. I guess what I'm saying to you is that if you really wanted what you posted, it's already possible as long as your local BOE will allow for it.
    • stop it, rlh. you’re gonna get me all misty eyed and sentimental.    i see seven fairly regularly. ….but slim shady, that’s like spotting bigfoot on main street. you just hope he doesn’t spot you.
    • Are you trying to say you didn't find Seven and ShadySlim going at it?
    • hey goat! how’s monterey looking this year?!
    • several people actually. they said “snoball, do you know who railbird81 is on coacht?” I said, “never heard of her.” they said, “you ought to check it out they’re getting fired up on there like the old days.” well, you can imagine my disappointment when I came here expecting sharp, witty banter and all i found was more akin to toddlers slap fighting. and what looks like 1 guy/gal talking to themselves with multiple accounts.
