The Commercial Appeal: Top 10 prep football games for Week 1

https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/high-school/2019/08/21/tennessee-high-school-football-schedule-tssaa-memphis-top-games/2050138001/

GAME OF THE WEEK

West Point at Horn Lake

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

This is a clash between the defending state champions from the MHSAA's two highest Classifications. Horn Lake is Class 6A's reigning champ, and West Point won in Class 5A. Ole Miss defensive line commitment Josaih Hayes and linebacker commitment Jakivuan Brown lead the way for the Horn Lake defense.

Thompson's pick: Horn Lake 28, West Point 17

Cordova at Central

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The last time these teams met, Central won on a touchdown catch from Darin Turner with less than two minutes remaining in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs. Turner, a 6-foot-3, four-star wide receiver, is back for the Warriors.

Thompson's pick: Central 17, Cordova 14

Bob Jones (Ala.) at Christian Brothers

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last year, Bob Jones beat Christian Brothers by one point in Alabama. Christian Brothers' Al Wooten was an all-state selection as an athlete last season, and sophomore athlete Dallan Hayden holds offers from Tennessee, Florida and Georgia among others.

Thompson's pick: Christian Brothers 24, Bob Jones 21

Ridgeway at MUS

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

For the third year in a row, MUS opens against Ridgeway. The Owls won in 37-16 in 2017 and 34-0 last year. This game is the first chance to see the slimmer, trimmer, four-star MUS lineman Marcus Henderson in action since he lost 45 pounds in the offseason. MUS also has a Memphis commitment in defensive back Devonte Nelson.

Thompson's pick: MUS 35, Ridgeway 21

Southwind at Collierville

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Collierville lost to Whitehaven 40-7 in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs. Southwind nearly upset region champ Kirby in the Class 5A second round but fell 36-34. This is the first August home opener for Dragon Field at Landers SportsPlex, which opened last September. Southwind running back Romal Webb was an all-state selection at Raleigh Egypt last year. Collierville's Jared Dawson is a Louisville defensive line commitment.

Thompson's pick: Southwind 31, Collierville 21

Southaven at Houston

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Houston fell to Whitehaven 31-27 in last year's Class 6A second round. Southaven, an MHSAA Class 6A school, was 4-7. Houston running back Lincoln Pare was a first-team all-state selection who rushed for 2,131 yards and 31 touchdowns last season. Southaven has cornerback Caleb Offord (Notre Dame commitment) and offensive lineman Kahlil Benson (Ole Miss) as well as four-star junior wide receiver Isaiah Brevard.

Thompson's pick: Southaven 31, Houston 24

Christ Presbyterian Academy at Evangelical Christian

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

ECS takes on defending DII-AA state champ CPA. ECS fell to Lausanne 35-14 in the DII-AA quarterfinals. CPA beat Lausanne in 21-14 in the semifinals. CPA lost star linebacker Kane Patterson, who is now at Clemson. ECS returns DII-AA West defensive player of the year Austin Hill and three-star junior offensive lineman Dietrick Pennington.

Thompson's pick: ECS 21, CPA 14

Senatobia (Miss.) at St. Benedict

 When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Senatobia reached last year's MHSAA Class 4A second round. St. Benedict lost to Briarcrest Christian in last year's TSSAA DII-AAA first round.

Center Hill at Lewisburg

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Center Hill opens against fellow Olive Branch school Lewisburg before back-to-back matchups with Southwind and Collierville. Lewisburg defensive back Cameron Threatt is a three-star Mississippi State commitment who also plays a number of positions on offense.

Thompson's pick: Center Hill 35, Lewisburg 24

Harding Academy at Fayette Academy

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Harding lost 49-48 to St. George's in an action-packed DII-AA first-round playoff game last year. Fayette Academy made it to the DII-A semifinals. Quarterback Rube Scott Rhea returns for the Vikings.

Thompson's pick: Fayette Academy 38, Harding Academy 35

    • Ouch! If he's in the scrap business maybe
    • That's a nice story but has little to nothing to do with what we're talking about.
    • The winds of change are blowing in Hartsville.     Will be an interesting follow.    Would go back to the 90s and turn black the clock!
    • Did he promise you a coordinator job or something if he ever got a head coaching job? He resigned? He was at the top of the dugout last night calling plays. I wonder if those 30+ parents would let him give their kids a ride. by the way the board meeting was last night and it was not mentioned. must have been at the work session earlier this week which is not public. must be trying to keep it quiet.  Since you know so much, how much is Robbie Atwood willing to pay Adam Cothron?  Didn't you slander Eden earlier on here? You also didn't know he was a faculty coach again so how much do you really know? Some people outside this county baffle me with their need to slander others.
    • He resigned smh, and have you ever heard of charged but not convicted. Some people in this county baffle me with their need to slander others. Have you asked any of the 30+ parents that signed a petition to get him reinstated at the board meeting this week how they feel about this? Just let it play out, at the end of the day the only people that will bring TC back are the ones that know what its about at its core.    People hate losing and they aren't used to it at TC. I for 1, and I'm sure others too, understand having a dip in talent and not being able to compete for a state title every year. But in the past, TC teams have outworked more talented teams, they didn't continuously lose the turnover battle, they didn't commit 8+ penalties in several games each season, and I believe several of the folks in town that want Blake out feel as if he is neglecting the history of the program. This is from a source that used to be extremely close to the program (not me lol), Blake gets out of school midday and the players show up and there is no practice plan or itinerary.  I also understand those that are on team Blake, when he has loads of talent, he wins. He does know football and he is a tremendous DC, and if the rumors are true then he will do great things. As for the board member issue, it is what it is, everyone that's true to the county know that and nothing has changed. I agree though that they should strive to make the facilities as good as we can. And as far as potential candidates, I agree there is very few options. West, Vetetoe (yes I know), and couple others that could have some interest. Whatever happens is massive for the program during a pivotal time before the next big wave of stars make their way through.
