Week 5 matches 4-0 Martin Westview versus 4-0 Covington. Let's see what we know about these opponents.

  • Westview is averaging scoring 51 points per game. They are giving up an average of just over 20 points per game.
  • Covington is averaging 39 points per game, but has only given up 19 points total in their four games to date.
  • Sonny_Moore shows Covington to be a 12-point leader in the power rankings, plus 3 for home field advantage, putting the point spread at 15.

It seems as if this game matches an irresistible force (the Westview offense) versus an immovable object  (the Covington defense).  Here's a fact that may have escaped people's attention though. Covington got Marcus Hayes (Mr. Football nominee at running back) back last night versus Brighton after he missed the last two games. Marcus was in top form, with 17 carries for 177 yards and 3 TDs.

This is a renewal of an old rivalry. I still can see in my minds eye the play that Darron White made vs. Westview all those years ago in the playoffs.  He took the ball from Raphel Hill as he was going in to score the winning TD in a playoff game and went like 99 yards the other way for the winning score. This will always be the best high school football play that I ever saw.

I was in attendance at that game when Darren went the other way for 99 yards! Amazing play!

I'm ready to the the stud quarterback over at Westview.

Wondering how the different styles of play will come in to play Friday night with Covington been a dominant running team and Westview passing. Should be a good one.

Is Westview the best team Covington has faced this year ?

Well, based on records to date, Westview has to be the best team we've seen so far. I'll be able to tell more after this game, though.

I was also in attendance way back in 2000 and I still think Hill crossed the goal line before the turnover. That was a long ride back to Martin.

I was on the sideline that night and have a copy of the highlight VHS from that year which shows the play....I assure you, he did not cross the goal line....Westview was a great team that year...I still remember attempting to block a certain DE named Justin Harrell...might as well tried to move a centerblock wall.

Harrell went on to play for the University of Tennessee and then on to play for the Green Bay Packers. Due to injuries, he had to retire early but is still in Tennessee and gives back to the community

It was crazy how he went to Green Bay of all places...with Chad Clifton.

The Martin team will be the best coached team Covington has played for sure.    Playing vs Waverly the last 5 years  I will tell you not to take your foot off the gas should you be up  even by 3 scores with 7 minutes left.

They will sometimes look like a defeated team who is struggling then ...4 game minutes later they have put 28 on the board.  Best in game adjustments I have ever seen in a HS coach.  He will be moving to the next level after this 3 years stint at WV. He went there to get in good with the QBs dad and prove himself worthy of a college job ...he will too!

I think Covington will win this one fairly easy. I was able to make the trip over and watch them play Brighton and they just dismantled them. I usually catch 2-3 Covington games a year, mostly in during the playoffs, and I must say that their defense is the best I have seen in the past several years of watching them. The offense may be a tad behind that in the past few years, but the defense is unbelievable.

Between Covington's rushing attack taking time off of the clock, and their defense being as good as it is, it Martin better make sure to capitalize on all of their opportunities to put points on the scoreboard, because you may not get as many chances as you have been in the first few games.

It also always amazing me to see Covington have so many guys play offense, defense, and special teams, but they never seem to get tired. Those guys can run for days it seems.

Hope it is a good game. Would be good to have a team in the region who can give Covington a run.

    • This late in the year, you’d have to think they’d go with an Asst. on staff, right? I’m pretty new to the area so still learning how folks do things around here…if Woods stays there to teach, it could be hard on a new guy/staff coming in…
    • Well, your Big Western Hunt better turn up some Zebras to come graze on the Stones to make the jungle gametime ready again and make sure the plumber bros. still will come service the facilities at the Mecca. I hope your weekend is Fowl. Tell Rip hello from the Five Oh. Maybe the Gravedigger will catch a ride with Alphaniner on a flyover soon to BNA.
    • It’s not hearsay, just patently false. As one of those young coaches he apparently “ran off”, coach never once ridiculed or degraded anyone. Sure he challenged kids and coached them very hard,  but we have different definitions of you call that degrading. Coach Hammontree changed my life when he gave me the chance to work for him. I learned more about being a man and caring for the people around me in 4 years working for him than I did in 20 years of my life. No one sacrificed more than he did. I left Heritage because I felt there would never be the support necessary to help the program succeed. I’m tired of hearing people drag others down especially those they truly don’t know. Coach has moved on and a new coach is there. Just let the man live and root for the team.
    • Waiting on the Great One.   White Horse and Rip have a big weekend in the woods, and the Sheriff is working the overtime here.      Turkey season awaits…..Big Gobblers everywhere.
