The Commercial Appeal: Top 10 prep football games for Week 5

Game of the week

White Station (3-1) at Collierville (2-2)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Collierville coach Joe Rocconi hosts his former team in a Class 6A matchup. The Dragons opened the season with a pair of one-point victories at home but have dropped their last two games on the road. White Station is coming off of a 13-7 road win over Christian Brothers. Each team has a three-star lineman to watch. White Station's Ray Curry Jr. is committed to Missouri, and Collierville's Jared Dawson is committed to Louisville.

Thompson's pick: White Station 28, Collierville 21

Houston (4-0, 0-0 7-6A) at Arlington (3-1, 0-0)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Houston's offense turned in another efficient performance in last week's 36-20 win over ECS. Lincoln Pare averaged 7.7 yards per carry and had three touchdowns. Grayson Hitt caught seven passes and two went for touchdowns. Arlington has won two in a row and has already posted a pair of shutouts, but its only game against a TSSAA Class 6A opponent was a 42-0 loss to White Station.

Thompson's pick: Houston 45, Arlington 21

Westview (4-0) at Covington (4-0)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Covington beat Brighton 42-7 in its region opener last week. The Charger defense is holding teams to 4.75 points per game. But it faces a Westview team that is averaging over 50 points, including last week's 52-16 win over Obion County.

Thompson's pick: Covington 48, Westview 40.

Cordova (3-1, 0-0 7-6A) at Bartlett (3-1, 0-0)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Cordova bounced back from its loss to South Panola with a 41-22 win over Lausanne. This week the Wolves open region play with Bartlett, which lost to Central by a touchdown last week.

Thompson's pick: Cordova 35, Bartlett 21

Whitehaven (3-1) at Southaven (1-3)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

This game features four members of the Commercial Appeal Dandy Dozen. Whitehaven has Arkansas linebacker commitment Martavius French and four-star linebacker Bryson Eason. Southaven has Notre Dame defensive back commitment Caleb Offord and Ole Miss offensive line commitment Kahlil Benson. Whitehaven is coming off of a close loss to Brentwood Academy. Southaven is coming off of a close win over Collierville.

Thompson's pick: Whitehaven 38, Southaven 14

Southwind (2-2, 1-0 8-5A) at Kirby (3-0, 1-0)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

This is a rematch of last year's Class 5A second round, which Kirby won 36-34. This could be Kirby's first test of the season as the Cougars have outscored opponents 117-0. The Southwind offense is averaging 39 points.

Thompson's pick: Kirby 35, Southwind 24

Fairley (3-1, 2-0 8-2A) at Mitchell (3-1, 2-0)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Fairley was shut out by Hernando last week. Mitchell lost 41-12 to Ridgeway. Fairley running back Terry Wilkins and Mitchell quarterback Hadem Sow are the players to watch in this one.

Thompson's pick: Fairley 31, Mitchell 21

Fayette Academy (3-1, 2-0 DII-A West) at Tipton-Rosemark (3-1, 1-1)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Fayette Academy has won its games against Tennessee opponents by an average margin of 31.6. Tipton-Rosemark won its first three games before falling 30-7 to University School of Jackson last week.

Thompson's pick: Fayette Academy 42, Tipton-Rosemark 24
