The Commercial Appeal: Top 10 Memphis-area high school football games for Week 8

Game of the Week

Horn Lake (3-3, 2-0 MSHAA 1-6A) at Olive Branch (4-2, 2-0)

This is a key region matchup between two of the best teams in DeSoto County. Both teams started the year 1-2 but have found their stride in region play.

There will be four SEC commitments on the field in Horn Lake defensive lineman Josaih Hayes (Ole Miss), Horn Lake linebacker Jakivuan Brown (Ole Miss), Olive Branch offensive lineman Xavier Hill (Alabama), and Olive Branch defensive lineman Jevon Banks (Mississippi State).

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Thompson's Pick: Olive Branch 21, Horn Lake 14

Whitehaven (5-1, 0-0 8-6A) at White Station (5-2, 1-0)

This is a matchup for first place between Region 8-6A's top offense and defense. White Station is averaging 31 points. Whitehaven is holding teams to five points per game.

White Station offensive lineman Ray Curry Jr. is a Missouri commitment. Whitehaven linebackers Tamarion McDonald (Mississippi State), Martavius French (Arkansas) and Bryson Eason (Uncommitted), are choosing between SEC schools as well.

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Thompson's Pick: Whitehaven 24, White Station 10

Houston (6-0, 2-0 7-6A) at Collierville (4-3, 1-0)

When: Thursday at 7 p.m.

Houston and Collierville are the last teams remaining in 7-6A without a region loss. That should make this year's rivalry mean even more. Houston running back Lincoln Pare and Collierville defensive lineman Jared Dawson are players to watch.

Thompson's Pick: Houston 38, Collierville 21

Arlington (5-2, 0-1 7-6A) at Bartlett (4-3, 1-1)

When: Friday at 7 p.m

Bartlett held Houston under 30 points last week but wasn't able to find enough offense to pull off the upset. Arlington was blown out by Houston earlier in the season.

Thompson's Pick: Bartlett 28, Arlington 24

Nashville Christian (6-0, 4-0 DII-A West) at Fayette Academy (5-1, 4-0)

This is a huge DII-A West matchup. Dual-threat quarterback Rube Scott Rhea, who has 861 passing yards and 717 yards rushing, will be key for the Vikings.

Thompson's Pick: Fayette Academy 42, Nashville Christian 35

Germantown (2-5, 0-0 8-6A) at Central (2-5, 0-1)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Since beating KIPP 50-0 opening night, the Red Devils have been held to 20 points or less in each game. Central has shown flashes of offensive ability, putting up 35 and 40 on Collierville and Bartlett, respectively, but has been held to 14 or less in all other games.

Thompson's Pick: Central 28, Germantown 14

Mitchell (5-2, 4-1 8-2A) at Hillcrest (3-3, 2-1)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Mitchell has won two in a row. Hillcrest is coming off of a 30-21 loss to Douglass. The Tigers have held region opponents to 11.6 points per game.

Thompson's Pick: Mitchell 21, Hillcrest 10

Northpoint Christian (2-5, 0-2 DII-AA West) at FACS (3-2, 1-1)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

FACS, led by quarterback Cole Putnam, comes in averaging 36 points. Northpoint has lost five of its last six.

Thompson's Pick: FACS 32, Northpoint 14

Trezevant (3-3, 2-1 8-2A) at MAHS (4-2, 3-1)

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

MAHS' Cameron Miller, a sophomore who has offers from Tennessee, Arkansas and Memphis among others, is one to watch in this one.

Thompson's Pick: MAHS 21, Trezevant 17

Raleigh-Egypt (0-5) at Kirby (5-1)

When: Friday at 7 p.m

Kirby has posted four shutouts. Raleigh-Egypt has been shut out three times. The Pharoahs' ability to move the ball will determine how close this one will be.

Thompson's Pick: Kirby 42, Ralight-Egypt 7

Last Week: 8-2

Season: 51-19 (.729)
