#1 Greeneville @ #2 Betsy

My observation is, this is a troubling loss if you're a Greeneville fan.  They've really only played 2 "good" teams this year, and struggled in both.  The defensive backfield is porous at times. Much of their success is due to the superior conditioning, but in both losses, they didn't seem to have a significant edge, and this played a factor.

One glaring problem is the lack of a consistent passing game.  There were some bad throws last night, but it's not fair to compare Drew Gregg's offense to Cade Ballard's.  How many times did we see Ballard toss the ball behind the line of scrimmage to one of either Cameron Hite, or Dorien Goddard, and watch the other help clear a path to the endzone.  Hite and Goddard were big targets that could run over people either with the ball or while blocking for others.  If we are honest, Gregg/Blayne Ferguson and Ballard aren't having to make the same throws under the same conditions, and they don't have the same personnel.

Watching the Greeneville program for the past few years has been special, particularly the previous two seasons.  We became accustomed to seeing them get the ball, and you knew that the first team offense would score in a few plays, and there was little question about it. Today, they are still a good football team, but they are grouped in with a lot of other good teams.  The margin for error is much smaller than in previous years.

Unfortunately for GHS, the schedule for the next 2 weeks and opening the playoffs probably won't offer a challenge, so they won't know if they have fixed any issues.  It's likely that none of us will know until they play at Elizabethton in a few weeks.

A couple last comments:

1) We are fortunate to have local tv coverage for high school football.  That crowd was unbelievable, and it was on tv.  I can only imagine how much more crowded it would have been if there was no tv coverage.

2)I try to never complain about announcers regardless of the level.  I think fans are too sensitive, and think announcers are always for the other team.  However, as the game wore on, it seemed that Paul Johnson was overly excited as Elizabethton picked up steam.  I didn't say anything, but my wife came into the room as I was watching, and voiced the same thought without my having said a word.  I think PJ is one of the best local sports guys that we have, but I wonder if many in the area are tired of the dominance of GHS for the past few years, and are ready for someone to knock them down a few notches.  If so, I fully understand it, as it happens in all sports.

You brought up some good points. Basically, Greeneville fans got spoiled the last few years and now "some" of their fans think it's their birthright to go undefeated every year. They don't consider the attrition from last years' awesome team, so it's easy to place the blame on the new coaching staff.  I'll say it again - losing two games by a total of 5 points on the road to two top-ranked teams is something knowledgeable fans are proud of.

Greeneville lost two very close games to two top ranked teams, on the road, after losing the talent they did from last years team, and you're questioning the coaches????

Close competitive game's. Some times come down to coaches decisions. Both those games were winnable. It's crunch time when you need to make the right play calls. Not run between the guard's 20 time's for about 30 yards. Why not option it to Gudger or run a pitch and get him outside with his speed and quickness. No we just continue to beat our heads against the wall and run straight up the middle. Team's or not going to let ty youngblood beat them this year. They are stacking the box and run blitzing right at Ty . Screen passes to Mason out in the flat would have been huge if we would have tried it. What about a reverse or a end around to Stephenson kid runs a 4:4 forty yard dash and we can't get him the Ball. How about clock management at the end of the first half. With 8 seconds left from the 20 elizabethton is going to play against a pass to the endzone. And make you throw it in front of them. In that case why take a chance on throwing it at all. The clock could have ran out it could have been intercepted it what happened intentional grounding. The kid is a good Kicker I have confidence in him from less than 40 yard's. If they  would have just kicked it with 8 seconds left it would have been 37 yard's. How about this you have a timeout  left run it with Mason he might have broken another one if not you call timeout and kick the field goal if he gains 5 yard's it's a 32 yard kick. But no we did what we did and it was 54 yard's which I can't even believe he attempted. Would have been nice to have those 3 points at the end of the game

What a game this was! I am from Greeneville and made the trip to Elizabethton because I knew this one would be a good one. I have one complaint though. The TSSAA. Why in the world would they have a Greeneville High School graduate as a referee this game? Also had his dad (who is a known Greene Devil supporter and very well could’ve went to Gville himself) as a referee running the clock. Some of you may know who I’m talking about. I won’t name any names. I just think they need to look into picking their officials a little better/smarter. Still a great game though.

So you’re “from Greeneville” and are complaining about referees working the game being from Greeneville? Give me a break. It obviously wasn’t enough to overcome the homer white hat...

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
