While you took time to bash private schools let's also remember that the parents of private school students also pay property taxes to fund the public school system in addition to paying tuition for their children to attend private school. You also seem to try and say that I am part of the problem for the lack of quality of public schools. I would love for you to explain that. As I live in Madison County, it is not my duty to help fix a broken down rust-bucket school system like the one in Shelby County. If you want to improve that dumpster fire of a school system, you must look from within. Rebuild those schools from the inside out. Better public and neighborhood Pride would be a good start. Many mothers and fathers in Memphis need to start worrying more about their kids and less about where they're going to get their next beer, cigarettes, or lottery tickets. The moral to my rant is don't expect me as an outsider to help fix a broken down Memphis school system repairs must start from within.

Hey Reitz. I agree with a lot of what you said. But disagree with one thing. You said the repairs must start from within. And I feel it is the opposite. Most of the time you have good administrators and teachers that are working hard and doing everything they can to point the ship in the right direction. Problem is that what takes place in the 16 hours kids spend per day out of school more greatly influences them than what goes on for 8 hours in school. I didn’t know where you were from.  I have a friend that lives in Milan.  Good area.  I AGREE with your comments here.  I did say private schools are “part” of the issue, but not a bash really.  Maybe I should have thought out the wording a little better.  You mentioned “rebuild from the inside out”.  You also mentioned just throwing money at it isn’t the answer, as tradertwo eloquently stated.  You are right.  Maybe my wording didn’t match my thoughts, but that’s what I meant by instead of building up the neighborhoods for the rich, build up the neighborhoods that those less fortunate can relate to, or feel more comfortable believing in.  I agree with BPM too, it starts in the home, but what is the County doing to better provide for those in the home.  Are they building businesses that brings those out of their homes and into employment, or into a better recreational place?  That’s what I meant.  You seem like a good guy Reitz, but I didn’t know where you are from.  You talked like you were more involved in Shelby County.

Pirate Mike I live in Madison County, specifically Jackson Tennessee. I stay out of Shelby County at all cost if I can. I have had to have dealings with Shelby County in the sports Realm. I mainly jumped into the this particular Fray when you said the private schools were the problem. They actually are not the problem at all private schools got a foothold and got rolling because of a crappy public school system. To blame private schools at all for the message Shelby county is actually wrong. Shelby County only has Shelby County to blame for the mess in the public schools. That is my opinion and there's blame to be throwing around on many levels from Mom and Dad to teachers and administrators along with politicians and probably a bunch more people. It's just not one person. I don't really blame the suits as you call them either. Those suits pay a tremendous amount of property taxes which fun the school system. If those suits weren't there and contributing that tax base the schools would be in even worse shape. I agree that may not have been the best worded statement that you have made because I read a lot of what you say and it really makes sense. Was not trying to bash you personally. I am a private school guy who supports one team in particular. And I will go to war against another private school at the drop of a hat over a ball game or something like that. You know we get rather chippy with each other over here in the West  and it can get pretty ugly at times . But I will rally around private schools as a whole when we are attacked in what I perceived to be an unfair manner. I understand.  I’m not against private schools, heck, if I could afford it my kids would go to one.  The cheapest over here is still between 6-8K for elementary and 9-10K for high school.  Then the high end is like 20K.  Some offer financial aid and some offer payments but still.  I’ve watched Chattanooga over here revitalize it’s downtown, and it has helped some, they even built nicer low income government type housing in the poorer areas for those less fortunate, but it isn’t anywhere near what goes on in Shelby Co.  Over here it seems like I hear a lot about STEM classes that seem to get the kids more involved hands on, which seems to be working well.  We can all opinionated on the matter but truthfully we don’t have the answers either.  Wish that we did.  Good luck to your sports team and wish you well.
