Pearl-Cohn is now 122-57 under Tony Brunetti and this will will mark their 7th trip to the State Semifinals since he took over as head coach in 2006. There's an old saying in sports that "in coaching you don't want to be the guy who replaces THE GUY, but instead you'd prefer to be the guy to replace the guy who had the unfortunate task of replacing THE GUY." Maurice Fitzgerald was the head football coach at Pearl-Cohn from 1990-2005 and in that time he compiled an overall record of 105-77 (now 145-97 Overall including his stints at Stratford and Hillsboro) and won the Class 4A State Championship in 1996 & 1997. When he resigned at Christmas time of '05 Pearl-Cohn was a very attractive job and had some suitors. When Coach Brunetti became the coach in February of '06 many wondered why a job as attractive as this couldn't land a guy who had prior head coaching experience. Pearl-Cohn has been among the most stable football coaching jobs you could find over the last 30 years with having had 2 head coaches during that time and compiling an overall mark of 227-134 with 9 trips to the State Semifinals and 2 State Championships. People have wanted for so long now for Pearl-Cohn and Alcoa to meet on a football field and honestly that should have been the case in 2017 had the Firebirds have held up their end of the bargain. I personally think this time is different because Pearl-Cohn's players remember that loss to Covington two years ago on their own homefield. Covington walked into their backyard in the second half of that game and flat out beat up PC physically and deserved to win that contest on that night. It is only poetic justice that Pearl-Cohn returns to this game with the same dream in mind and the same opponent stands in front of them. If Pearl-Cohn wants to call themselves a CHAMPIONSHIP football team then 13-0 and wins over Cane Ridge, Independence, East Nashville (twice), Giles County (twice), Hillsboro, Stratford, and even Montgomery Bell Academy just simply do not matter. This round has haunted them for so long and they need to find a way to win a critical football game against an elite opponent from West-TN. Pearl-Cohn: 42 Covington: 14 PC only scored 28 vs Giles (twice) . You think they are scoring 42 on Covington? Wow. GIles scored 28 or less against EN, Strafford, page, Marshall county, Tullahoma, Fairview and Strafford (again) You must think Covington has really dropped off on defense or the offense isn't good enough this year to sustain drives or eat enough clock.

Come on now don't throw something out there like that without your reason behind saying it. Because now you looking like you have something against PC! Maybe you wanted attention so if that's case I'll give it to you. How the heck you gone get on here and say 13-0 team not good enough? PC is pretty much the only undefeated team in the state that don't get any respect! No media coverage whatsoever, then its people like you that get on here just talking without no reason to why you said it. People look at fb26 and myself saying (Pearl Cohn vs Everybody) that's not to be arrogant but that's just how it is! So Friday night if we so happen to lose, it won't be because these kids or coaches wasn't good enough or our kids wasn't prepared for Friday. Now that's something i can ensure you!!! Just because PC is undefeated means they are the best and can beat everyone. I stand by my comment that they are not good enough to win state. I don't think they will win this Friday. How is it hard to see what I am saying.I have nothing against PC, they are good, just I don't think they are better than the next 2 teams they will be playing to win state. You say they are good enough and I say they aren't. We just have different opinions. Edited November 25, 2019 by hardtackle

Not defending Howdy because I do think he's off his rocker predicting 42 against Covington's defense... However, I think you're underestimating Giles Co a little bit Hammer. I believe they could challenge Covington just as much or more than they did Pearl. Their record is misleading and causes the confusion because they played a brutal schedule. Kind of like some of those CAK teams of 13, 14, 15 etc. They also have a unique style of ball control and clock management that is effective and really limits the opposition's opportunities to score if they don't commit penalties. I think Pearl is good enough to win this game by a couple of scores on a dry field. No disrespect to the Chargers intended. I just think Pearl's that good this year. Covington may not score on offense IMO. Especially if they play at PCHS in the mud. At least that's how I see it
CHARGERFAN
Here's an article from the Covington Leader with a recap of Covington's win over Wooddale to make the semifinals, plus some of Coach J.R. Kirby's thoughts on playing Pearl-Cohn. Here is my train of thought, Covington also plays a style of offense that eats clock and controls the ball and limits the opponents opportunities to score. Covington has been to the state title game the last two years and its defense is battle tested. PC has only scored 40 points on one team that had a winning record this year. PC gave up 40 to Hillsboro, another team with a losing record. PC only scored 14 and 28 points the two games it played against east Nashville this year. I'm not saying Covington should win, I'm just saying I doubt PC will score 42 on them. I could happen with some turnovers and special teams plays. But with the offense Covington runs, you have to hit more than a few big plays to put up 42. I looked at Giles schedule, again not taking anything away from them, but I think the only team they played that made the quarter finals was PC.
