Germantown hires Fairley's Gene Robinson, 28, as football coach

Germantown has hired Fairley's Gene Robinson III as its next head football coach, the school announced Monday.

Robinson, 28, is the three-time defending Region 8-2A coach of the year. Fairley finished 10-3 and made the Class 2A quarterfinals this season. 

Robinson starred at Whitehaven before playing at North Carolina. He has been coaching in the Memphis area since 2014.

He coached the Red Team to a 14-10 victory in this year's AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star game. He's the only person to play and coach in the game. 

Robinson replaces Tommy Ferrill, who was 2-9 in his only season season as Red Devils coach after winning a state title as an offensive coordinator at Horn Lake. Germantown was 2-9 last season and lost 56-12 to rival Houston in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.

Congratulations to him, and shutout to Germantown for giving a 28 year old a shot at a 6A school. I was fairly impressed with Fairley this season, and I believe he'll do just fine. It'll take him some time, but by 2025 I would hope to see him thrive as a Red Devil, and he'll only be 33 at the time.

Derek Hunt was handed the keys at Maryville when he was 27.  Of course Maryville is 5A playing up to 6A.

He had a absolutley loaded team 30 plus seniors with superior talent ,, I get it hes "inspirational" and a super person but he cost his team a possible gold ball with subpar coachimg against the Tide !!! I say challenge my opinion without emotion, just logic !

Ok. I’ll be your huckleberry just for giggles and play devils advocate. How did coaching effect the bobbled snap where you guys recovered the fumble?  They had no problems snapping the ball earlier in the game did they??  Don’t see how coaching impacted that. If it wasn’t for that play nothing else matters right???  Again just want to play devils advocate.

If you look at the replay I believe it was #86 for Peabody that was the only player that didn't concede the play beforehand.  Seems to me he just timed the snap perfectly and helped create the fumbled exchange.  Had he just went through the motions of a 'soft' attack on the play Peabody wouldn't have won that game.   Even with that play Peabody still had to convert the drive into points and subsequently the 2 point conversion.  

I just think there was a little bit of everything involved on that play and throughout the game.  Coaching, players, luck and Divine intervention.

I'll play along... Coach's biggest mistake was throwing the ball that Baugus intercepted. One first down puts the game away, and they have the best RB in the classification... if you can't gain 10 yards, you punt the ball back at your 35 with around a minute left. You can't fault for the INT., but the clock stops if incomplete.Second huge mistake was spiking the ball from the shotgun. Ruled (correctly) intentional grounding, loss of down, 10 yards, from the spot, about six yards from LOS... cost a down and sixteen yards. Funny thing is, the kids bailed Coach out on all those mistakes, validating your point about the fumble, and still should have won... except for the fatal miscue, which was going under center for the "victory" formation, which (according to all accounts) they hadn't done all season (that was the reason given for spiking the ball from the shotgun, and not under center).

   Probably going to offend some Peabody folks, but the better team that night lost because a chain of bad decisions were more than they could overcome in the end, compounded by terrible luck. Play out that sequence 100 times more and Fairley wins almost all of them even with the coaching flaws, just didn't the one time that they had the opportunity.
