STEWART*

Stewart also competed in track and field under coach Mac Pickle while at Maryville, finishing second in the state in decathlon as a senior. Stewart also qualified for the state meet in the 100m, 110m hurdles, 400m, 200m, high jump, long jump, triple jump, discus, and shot put, but opted out of those competitions to compete in the state’s decathlon finals.

I know you stick and ball guys like to leave out track, but it's a sport.

Believe it or not he also won a state wrestling title in middle school in his 1st year wrestling. As a Freshman he was a 174 pounder.

My apologies....track is more of a sport then most that are labeled a sport.

Maryville lost a lot but return a lot of good players.  On offense Trevor Abdella returns on the Oline. Parker McGill returns as RB. Nick Dagel is a receiver with lots of experience.  Cade Chambers will be missed  but Carson Jones will be a great Quarterback.  He has a gun for an arm. Other names to remember are Markel Fortenberry and Noah Vaughn.  I have a feeling other kids will step up.

On defense there will be a lot of new names. 4 starters return but they are darn good players.  DJ Burks will be a D1 safety.  Lou Burchfield was awesome last year. Zack Braden was outstanding.  I have a feeling new kids will step up. Including little Greyrider. The upcoming senior class is small but has some good players.  Upcoming junior and sophomore classes are loaded.

The expectations for the new guys are always cool to watch. Almost always a surprise or three.
All the opportunities in 2020 really show what a better-than-normal senior class they had. It was a really good group this past year.

He did not. I don’t know if he’s a 2 sporter. I hope the North Knoxville kid comes out for football too. He’s been a game changer on the court.

Unless there are two kids from the left coast, I think he plays with the stick and ball as well. Maybe a 3 sport kid next year. Or 4 if we count the math team.

That’s what we have always been told for sure, but I’m beginning to wonder if it is true. With all the specialized trainers available today, players may be able to get their bodies in better shape for one sport. IDK
Over the last 10-15 yrs, any idea how many of murvils D1 players chose to drop other sports and specialize vs continuing to play multiple sports thru high school? Here are a few I remember:

Douglas-Bama?-football/basketball

Hopkins-UAB-football

Stewart-Auburn-football/?  BASKETBALL Also

Jackson-Stanford-football/?

Hodge-UT-football

Humphrey-FL-basketball

Coulter-UT-volleyball

Curtis-Lipscomb-football/baseball

Thompson-SC-football

Shelton-CoC-football

Oliveira-Citidel-football

McCray-NCST-football/?

Black-Clem-football/?  Played basketball

Robinette-Vandy-football  Played Basketball until senior year after football was over

Chambers-ISU-football/basketball

Church-KY- baseball

Im sure there are lots more. As I said, I’ve encouraged kids to play as many as possible, but I think the kids who specialize are gaining quite an advantage. As a parent and HS fan, I hate it.

Mostly, I was referring to specialization at an early age.  Almost everyone of these players who I know were multi-sport athletes until at least starting high school.  Several continued to play more than one sport in high school. A.J. Davis will probably be D1 at some level.  He plays basketball also.
