Fun match to watch between Harper and Petersen! Two great wrestlers!! Rematch will be a battle in the Cow Palace!

Unfortunately a couple of very questionable calls had a direct affect on the outcome. (Hands to the face on Petersen, locked hands on Petersen and stalling on Harper) Would like to have seen two officials on the mat this evening at Ryan, because the second official would have helped on the Harper locked hands debate and been able to give input, which could have changed the match and how both guys wrestled in the final 1:00 in a close match. It’s a tough job as an official especially when it comes to a call similar to that at the end of a high profile match between two of the State’s best!

Congrats to Baylor! They are loaded!

No one can say Bradley Central head wrestling coach Ben Smith ducks tough competition.

Battling their fourth Top 4 team in a week's time, as well as a earning a runner-up finish in the 20th annual Fandetti/Richardson Brawl, the veteran Bear tamer was disappointed not only with a tough loss, but his second-ranked Bears' performance Thursday evening at "The Jim."

"We grade on effort, not wins and tonight there was not a lot of effort in some spots or else we could have turned that score around," he declared after a 39-27 defeat to Father Ryan, the No. 4 ranked Division II squad.

"We love Father Ryan and Coach Pat Simpson. We enjoy wrestling them. They made a trip all the way down here (from Nashville) on a school night just because they wanted to wrestle us and we didn't give them our best effort.

"We've got some work to do. Life is not what happens to you, but how you respond to it, so hopefully we'll use this as a good thing and get ready for next Thursday (when Soddy-Daisy comes in for the District 8-AAA championship meet)," Smith remarked.

"After a disappointing result last Thursday (a 42-27 loss to top-ranked archrival Cleveland), we had a big weekend against some top competition (defeating then No. 2 Science Hill to take over their spot in the state poll and a loss to third-ranked D-II Christian Brothers on Friday before the Fandetti Saturday) and maybe we're worn down some, but we've had several days to recover, so that shouldn't be it.

"I've got to look at myself, and us coaches, to see what we need to being doing to better prepare us," he continued. "We're healthy. We're practicing hard, so I don't know why we weren't up for this match.

"I don't know how you can be flat on Senior Night in your own gym against a state-ranked team like Father Ryan. All those things should excite you, but for the most part we weren't.

"We've got to figure it out. We're two or three instances away from turning this meet around. I've got some guys who need to go see the 'Wizard' and get some heart and some fight," remarked Smith.

Like they did against Cleveland a week ago, the Bears got in a big hole early against Father Ryan and had to try to claw their way out.

After the visitors handed them six points, starting the meet with a forfeit at 132, the Fightin' Irish, who feature 10 ranked wrestlers in their lineup, won seven straight contested matches, including a five pins, for a 36-6 edge.

Sixth-ranked Bear heavyweight Austin McClure stemmed the tide with a 63-second "stick" for Bradley's first earned points of the evening.

Top-ranked Ethan Wilson followed suit, needing just 77 ticks to put No. 4-ranked Joseph Jones' shoulder to the mat at 106.

Like there were last week against the Raiders, the hosts needed to close with three straight pins to tie the meet.

Unranked sophomore Easton Lipsey kept the Bear hopes alive with a second-period (3:15) upset pin of fourth-ranked Matt Oberlander to pull Bradley within striking distance at 36-24.

However, in a battle of ranked 120-pound wrestlers, Father Ryan's No. 2 rated Calvin Eason shutout fifth-ranked Luke Belcher 4-0, to secure the meet for the visitors.

Bradley did get a final win as No. 5 Taron Patterson blanked his 126-pound opponent 2-0.

Once again the luck of the draw on what weight class to start at worked against the Bears.

"I'm not going to buy a lottery ticket any time soon," Smith stated. "The way our lineup works out, if we start at the wrong weight class, it can be ugly. We've got some work to do on our middle and upper weights.

"In dual meet wrestling, like any other sport, momentum is a real thing and it's hard to stop it once it gets rolling."

Bradley is now 9-5 in dual meet action this season with those losses coming to fellow Top 4 Tennessee opponents, plus a Georgia state champion.
