I think overkill has happened in high schools with individual sports. Year long demands and coaches demanding or expecting kids to specialize. Colleges still want multi sports athletes and a lot of high schools need to share athletes. I remember Principal Dan Herron demanding coaches that when football was over it was basketball and when it was over it was baseball and then it was summer time and nothing was done with your sport until it started back the next season according to TSSAA calendar. Also any coach that went against his policy was no longer coaching.

I know for a fact that Watson and Williams both encouraged multiple sport athletes.  A few years ago, Williams stressed how many athletes were multiple sport athletes when they got recruited.  Very glad specialization is not stressed at Gallatin.  Now if the athlete wants to only play one sport then so be it.

Back on topic, I have no problem with the way football practice might take shape this year.  I just hope we get to see football.

You are correct but I never said it was the same thing. But let’s just say a coach isn’t willing to coach without the supplement. If there is a candidate available that is willing and has the appropriate certification the writing is on the wall for the old coach in regards to his teaching position.

Sounds like socialism and Nazi Germany.  Hard balling coaches into coaching for free is resiculous.  Are they cutting band supplement, drama supplements, supplements for heads of departments, tutoring supplements, etc?  Or is it just athletics?

The school system I am working in is cutting across the board. The have to reduce the total budget by approximately 1 million dollars so it is coming from all areas. Because there is less local sales tax revenue coming in and the governor is reducing BEP funding from school budgets all systems will be dramatically affected. Many school systems will cut out positions. Mine in particular is going to keep everyone employed but is having to tighten the belt in many areas. No one would be happy about losing a supplement me included as I currently receive  a nice supplement in my position. However it will probably be cut. At the end of the day I understand the situation we are facing and am grateful I still have a job to provide for my family.

Not trying to nuke this thread, but wouldn't this COVID situation warrant a modest property tax increase, just to help keep everything afloat?

I honestly feel this is a one or two year financial problem. When this is over and done with and the economy is back on track it won’t be an issue. If you issue a property tax increase now does it revert back when sales tax revenue normalizes?  I see where your coming from but if there is another avenue to get districts by for 1-2 years without a tax increase I feel they should take it. Just my two cents.

Good point. Tax increases and levies aren't temporary, in most cases. Tightening the belt is probably the most reasonable short-term solution. I know this isn't a popular opinion in TN, but I favor a tax levy in certain cases simply because most teachers state-wide are underpaid.

And I understand that. But simple fixes aren't even being considered.  If you cut the school week to 4 days which would extend the work day by 1 1/2 hours then you would save millions on gas for buses by eliminating that 1 day.  Not to mention the other benefits for the kids.   Why doesn't a system do that to cut instead eliminating jobs or supplements.  Why start at the things that hurt the most?

You are correct there are other solutions. They may be simple and they may not. Sometimes things are not as simple as they appear.

    • Ouch! If he's in the scrap business maybe
    • That's a nice story but has little to nothing to do with what we're talking about.
    • The winds of change are blowing in Hartsville.     Will be an interesting follow.    Would go back to the 90s and turn black the clock!
    • Did he promise you a coordinator job or something if he ever got a head coaching job? He resigned? He was at the top of the dugout last night calling plays. I wonder if those 30+ parents would let him give their kids a ride. by the way the board meeting was last night and it was not mentioned. must have been at the work session earlier this week which is not public. must be trying to keep it quiet.  Since you know so much, how much is Robbie Atwood willing to pay Adam Cothron?  Didn't you slander Eden earlier on here? You also didn't know he was a faculty coach again so how much do you really know? Some people outside this county baffle me with their need to slander others.
    • He resigned smh, and have you ever heard of charged but not convicted. Some people in this county baffle me with their need to slander others. Have you asked any of the 30+ parents that signed a petition to get him reinstated at the board meeting this week how they feel about this? Just let it play out, at the end of the day the only people that will bring TC back are the ones that know what its about at its core.    People hate losing and they aren't used to it at TC. I for 1, and I'm sure others too, understand having a dip in talent and not being able to compete for a state title every year. But in the past, TC teams have outworked more talented teams, they didn't continuously lose the turnover battle, they didn't commit 8+ penalties in several games each season, and I believe several of the folks in town that want Blake out feel as if he is neglecting the history of the program. This is from a source that used to be extremely close to the program (not me lol), Blake gets out of school midday and the players show up and there is no practice plan or itinerary.  I also understand those that are on team Blake, when he has loads of talent, he wins. He does know football and he is a tremendous DC, and if the rumors are true then he will do great things. As for the board member issue, it is what it is, everyone that's true to the county know that and nothing has changed. I agree though that they should strive to make the facilities as good as we can. And as far as potential candidates, I agree there is very few options. West, Vetetoe (yes I know), and couple others that could have some interest. Whatever happens is massive for the program during a pivotal time before the next big wave of stars make their way through.
