Dead Period to be cancelled???

Recommended Posts

TSSAA will meet on Thursday to discuss the dead period. Word on street they are looking at cancelling the dead period.

As a father of an athlete who has already scheduled family vacation around these weeks, I hope they keep ithe dead period in place going forward.

Coaches say they won't penalize kids for missing but we know how that goes.

And it is a real shame that many people feel that they cannot trust their childs coaches to not hold it against them.

I would imagine there are a few coaches that are planning on going out of town for those two weeks as well.

Players had a 2-3 months off dead period. Many had no way to workout or keep in shape. Some programs in West Tn have had organized team workouts for weeks and some programs are not allowed to meet with their kids in June. Some programs have brand new coaching staffs in place who were robbed of spring practices and have not had an opportunity to install their offensive or defensive systems. Absolutely, they should do away with dead period for 2020.

Equally as likely for a parent to use as an excuse their kid isn't playing because he went on vacation with his family over a coach penalizing a good player.

Haven't have communication with a coach or a parent who doesn't want the dead period to be waived.  The students have had a 3 month dead period.  They need those two weeks in the weight room after missing so much work, and especially given how close the start of the season actually is.

And, yeah, there are some jackleg coaches who will be jerks, but given that they all know it's not a normal situation, I see very few playing that game.  At this point I think they all realize that it's better to have most of their players during those two weeks than to have none of their players during those two weeks.

And I have a feeling that the TSSAA is going to pass the buck to the individual school districts whether or not to observe the scheduled dead period.

I tend to agree with you.

Have you heard anything about the passing leagues?

No, I haven't.

But I haven't asked anybody about them, either.  I'm not big on passing leagues.  Understand why teams do them, but it's not the football I enjoy watching.

You give a great point to why the dead period should stay.

Some school districts have chosen to not start back up until after dead period by keeping dead period in place you do not penalize those schools with school districts who are not allowing them to practice. It keeps a somewhat level playing field. If you cancel dead period that gap just gets wider for those schools.

How you can read post one and compose post two is beyond me... I have been frustrated by people taking my intent and twisting it to mean something entirely different, but this takes the proverbial cake.

Roughly, how many schools have not been allowed to start workouts at this time?

Penalizing the whole state just because a few have chosen not to start up is really irrational and unreasonable thinking.  It just makes little sense.

The playing field will never be level.  Those districts whose powers that be aren't going to go with the waiver are likely not providing opportunity in other ways that allow programs to flourish.

Sports aren't socialist.  There are winners and losers in every single contest.
