AND who are you and why the shade...

Been watching Springfield since 1966, there is a lot of difference in coach Boyce Smith playing the biggest schools in Nashville ie Isaac Litton, M B A, Clarksville, and Murfreesboro ( last two cities only one high school in each town) and today’s list of opponents. Elizabethton and Greenville are cities of comparable size but are better coached and conditioned than Springfield. Springfield beat teams with more population and resources regularly to the point Boyce Smith was approached by the Nashville Intersolastic League to join them because they played so many games against the city schools there. Now Springfield struggles to beat White House and Greenbrier every year teams Coach Smith wouldn’t have scrimmaged let alone play in the regular season.

Where do you get that we struggle to beat White House and Greenbrier, also Springfield is as well coached as anyone, just maybe the teams in east TN are just really good, everything you said is completely off base. You are bitter about something, whether you admit it or not...

You must’ve been involved with that McMinn Central team in 1993 in some capacity. I recall that East Tennessee team lost to someone from Middle Tennessee in the 3A state championship

The game wasn’t close. I remember that game well McMinn Central got boat raced in that game

It’s the classic apples to oranges comparison to compare Coach Smith to Coach Wilson

Since you bring up things Boyce Smith did, why don’t we go back to wearing leather helmets and shoulder pads and run the single wing like his teams did back in the day?

Two of the main reasons we play White House and Greenbrier are 1) they have been in our district/region a lot the last 10-20 years, and 2) the gate these teams bring when they play us at our place. Football these days is self supporting and the gate monies go a long way toward supporting that and it also helps other sports that have little to no attendance. These teams/schools have grown in size and Springfield isn’t as large as it was (comparatively) in the 50s and 60s. There are a lot more schools playing football now and the private schools are a whole other animal. The private schools take the best of the best and leave the rest for the public schools

Springfield, or Coach Wilson that is, does try to somewhat schedule up to play better competition. It is getting tougher to do that because as he has grown his program, larger class teams don’t want to play Springfield. The coach at Gallatin, before the current coach Watson that is there now, put a stop to our series with them. As stated earlier, even with us going 5A next year I would bet Coach Wilson still attempts to schedule Greenbrier, White House, and/or White House Heritage just for the gate alone. The region we are moving to next year does not have teams that bring good visiting crowds outside of Henry County for sure and maybe Portland. The Clarksville directional schools, NE and NW, bring no crowd. I also bet he tries to schedule Coach Shelby’s Clarksville High team since it is one of the oldest rivalries in the state and they bring a good crowd.  It is almost impossible not to play down and play your local rival teams if you want to make money

Thank you for your long term following and interest in Springfield football. Hopefully we one day can live up to the standard set by Coach Smith. Oh, did you ever meet and have a conversation with Coach Smith? I did, for he was a substitute teacher when I was in high school.  Trying to compare what high school football was in the 60s to now is like trying to compare how Bobby Jones played golf as to how Tiger Woods plays now. Enjoy the rest of the playoffs this year and stay safe this year, social distance, wear a mask, and wash your hands frequently, for if you are as old as you say you are probably susceptible to great harm from Covid-19.

    • Agree. The man literally sacrificed time, moments, memories you can't get back with his own family for every single athlete at that school. (and many others) To those that continue to be negative about him and continue to bring him up; He's been loyal, hardworking and just his entire coaching career. Ask anyone that actually has a leg to stand on in regard to Coach.
    • Egotistical? That's a new one.  It's funny, I'm friends with two of the younger coaches that he "ran off" as you say. In fact, he helped them find jobs, encouraged them to do what was best for their growing families, provided advice, support and still does to this day.

    • Track has always been big at OR. Ran off about 7 straight titles in the 60s. Your hate for Gaddis runs deep, huh? What did he ever do to you, to make you disdain him that much? You can’t seem to stop talking about the guy. He’s living rent free in your head. Might wanna get that checked out, you don’t wanna go to the grave with that on your heart.
    • This late in the year, you’d have to think they’d go with an Asst. on staff, right? I’m pretty new to the area so still learning how folks do things around here…if Woods stays there to teach, it could be hard on a new guy/staff coming in…
