Playoffs - 5A Championship - Oak Ridge vs Summit

That Oak Ridge team that showed up in Cookeville would lose to a lot of teams.Its the same team that lost to DB 19-3 but shouldve been closer to 35-3.Same team in reg season that couldnt gain a yard on West and lost 22-7 but score shouldve been worse.The Oak Ridge offense struggled a lot this yr and wouldnt have made it without changing to a 5 wide offense that looked amazing vs a really good West team.For some reason I may never know they only ran that offense vs Summit for 1 play.That 1 play was the Oak Ridge TD on 4th down.Once Oak Ridge lost their 2nd starter on Oline the reg offense had no chance.While I think Summit was a better team because of great QB and how good they execute their offense Oak Ridge wasnt close to the team they was vs West.To say all those teams would beat Oak Ridge handily is a big strecth.Beech lost to Powell who didnt even make it out of 1st rd and was 3rd in our region.I think 5A had 6 or 7 teams that could win it all if they was playing good at the right time.Who knows for sure but by end of yr I think Summit,Beech and West was the top 3.Then your Oak Ridge,HC,Central,South Doyle.When your as good as the top 7 or 8 teams it comes down to how you matchup with what team you play,who plays best that night and gets some breaks

I don't really have a team, but it happened several times for OR's benefit in the playoffs.

I’m not surprised that Summit won but was surprised how dominate they were right from the beginning. As others have stated Oak Ridge didn’t play their best football last night but Summit showed that it really wouldn’t have mattered. The Wildcats needed their defense to keep them in this game to have a shot at the end but D. Wade put that strategy to bed pretty early. Besides the Wades, I don’t know what all Summit has back next year but they could make some big noise in 6A next year. 

I hate dogging officials because it is a thankless job, but it was pretty bad last night. I don’t get it. They should use the best of the best officials for these championship games. 

Congrats to Oak Ridge on a great and memorable season. Every good high school football team ends their season with a loss except for 1 and you guys took it all the way to Cookeville. That’s a lot to build on. 

Those bad officials benefitted OR significantly again on Friday.

Just a couple of observations....in the West game, there were 2 really bad calls each resulting in a TD for each team.  The call for West that said the punt hit an OR player in the back was wrong, if you watch the film that the locker room had, plus the kids on the field who were right there said it was wrong.  I think it hit #3 for West first.  That resulted in a TD for West.  Take away that TD for West and the other TD for OR at at the end of the game and OR still wins by 3.   The bad call against SD was unfortunate, but honestly SD couldn't move the ball against OR all night long, so it may not have made any difference, and even if they had somehow scored then, OR still wins by a TD.  I agree there were bad calls but they went both ways and I don't believe they would have changed the outcome of any of the games.  Also, at Cookeville,  every time we got momentum it was called back by yet another flag.  The call at the 1 yard line, which you had to watch the replay to see, didn't change the outcome of the game, so what difference does it make?  If your point is there are a lot of bad refs, I totally agree.

I guess I was the only one, but I thought the ball might have crossed the plane even before Jackson fumbled it. Either way, it was extremely close.

No. My point was OR had the benefit of egregious calls all the way through.  The punt call isn't a "bad call", it's a tough call that you aren't even sure about.  

 

The Bad snap play, The phantom facemask, and the fumble that wasn't, were all score changing calls that there were no excuse for.  

 

And in the Championship game, the flags were in OR's favor by almost 50 yards.  

 

OR had the breaks...

Actually I feel very sure about the punt call, based on what the players who were right there saw.  Also, one of the refs even called it OR ball before the other one reversed it.

It's ironic because in a lot of games I feel like we are the ones that don't get the breaks.  Maybe it just evened out some.  I can say I don't think any were done deliberately wrong.  It's just bang-bang situations.

I don't think they were deliberate either.  But I don't want to hear y'all bad-mouthing the refs.  You got break after break.
