New look Region 5 Class 1A

Now that the season is officially over, let's take a look at 2021 and hope that through the offseason, the mess that affected 2020 goes away. Hopefully we can get back to scrimmages, spring practice/games, 7 on 7, etc. Region 5 has a new look this season. Gone are Mt. Pleasant and Ricland, added are Collinwood, Wayne County, and Eagleville. My way too early prediction for the region shakes out like this:

1. Fayetteville--Defending 1A state champs. Until proven otherwise, preseason #1 in the region and possibly state.

2-3. Moore County/Cornersville--Cornersville loses only 7 seniors from last seasons team, but four of those were skill position, including QB. Some question marks for sure, but did play a bunch of underclassmen who received valuable game experience. Moore County, New coach brought fire and explosive offense. Can that be maintained? Not sure of who all graduated, but feel like will still be a very good team.

4-7. I feel the last playoff spot is up for grabs between four very good perennial playoff teams. Those being Eagleville, Huntland, Wayne County, and Collinwood. If I had to make a pick today, I would say the spot goes to Eagleville. Nothing against the other teams, but in this region three good teams are going to be left out of the playoffs.

Thoughts?

I really do not know all that much about the new teams in the region, but its hard to argue with your order. Definitely my FC Tigers defend their region championship, but I am going to pick Moore County as a solid second, and possible darkhorse for region champs. However, their QB, which was really good is gone, so I think the talent difference between MC and FC is still pretty wide overall. Huntland may jump in at 3rd, but after Fayetteville City and Moore County, it will make for some really good matchups to make the playoffs in the 3rd and 4th spots.

Don’t know much about the new additions to the region so my guess of finish for those who remain is:

1. City - they have enough coming back they should repeat

2. Moore Co - they lost a lot but I am told they have some underclassmen who can play. Not sure who will be playing QB in their spread. I am guessing the coach’s son eventually winds up there. Only thing that is a question mark for me is their line. If they have a good line, I think they can be solid in the 2 spot.

3. Cornersville - talented but probably not enough to take a top 2 spot

4. Huntland - not sure what they have besides Johnson. And based on the way they struggled when Stewart was out, they may be in trouble.

Would love to hear how Eagleville, Wayne and Collinwood will stack up from someone who knows.

Region definitely #1

I think as far as state I’ll say 2 behind Peabody.

I think the top 4 preseason will be

1. Peabody

2. Fayetteville

3. South Pittsburg

4. McKenzie

not my poll just what I think the AP will be.

I keep forgetting that Peabody is moving down. Definitely #1 in the state. Would agree with you in the state rankings. Really want to keep this more about R5 than state, but wherever the discussion goes is ok with me.

I understand that. Single A got a lot harder this year... for everyone lol. It should be fun lol. Ok back to your region 5 talk.

Eagleville will be much better in 2021. Senior QB and some very good receivers. Their Sophomores-to-be class were middle school champs as 8th graders defeating the Fayetteville squad and their QB was The league MVP over the Fayetteville phenom RB.

Spot on about the Eagles, the Sophomores beat an undefeated MTCS team that also beat FC that year.

I have it as is

Cornersville lost 7 Sr.

Collinwood lost 5 Sr.

Eagleville lost 6 Sr.

Fayetteville lost 8 Sr.

Huntland lost 12 Sr.

Moore Co lost 16 Sr.

Wayne Co. lost 15 Sr.

I could have missed someone but this is from the TSSAA website as of 12/14/20. Fayetteville has a lot of talent coming back in '21 but that doesn't mean that they are a shoe in for the region. R5 has been one of the toughest in the state for 20+ years. This region eats its self. Everyone is penciling in Peabody for the state title game and even winning it. but they have also done this with SP, Huntingdon and many others. Do not sleep on R5 next year. Some have a lot of talent some are coming to retain there rightful place at the top and others are trying to make a splash in a new region.

I think Fayetteville is the favorite until beaten and will probably get more Transfers but i think Cornersville will be at the top 2 again. They have a lot of experience returning and are still young but will play older. Moore has a lot of ? but has a lot of talent to work with. Do they get any of the FC Transfers? I think Huntland slips just a bit but with FC getting put on 2 yr ban. How many FC kids Transfer to Huntland to have a chance to go to the playoffs. The Transfers could change a lot for either one of these schools. Eagleville will be good with there passing game but can they run the ball like they have in the past? Collinwood and Wayne Co both were in the playoffs last year so they know how to get there and will be tough. Someone will be left out but who?

Back when I was in school word got out I was going to transfer and Coach Story popped off and ask Coach Wilson in front of the team if Maryville was going to get a jock strap in return on this trade. That got back to me and I got fired up and stayed just to show them up. Now today Coach Story is one of my best friends.
    • Dylan's Dad, I'm glad you replied. I wanted to reply but wasnt willing to take the bait. There were 20 wrestlers on the team. I may be mistaken and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 5 of the 20 attend McCallie right now and one will next year. At most, there are/were 6 kids on that team who attend McC. That leaves 14 other team members who have ZERO affiliation with McC (outside of maybe some friends) who represented our state to the best of their ability and wrestled their butts off that weekend. That weekend was a first for Tennessee and obviously a small step in the right direction for us as a state. Congratulations TEAM TN BLACK!
