I loved Otasco. I got my first bicycle there in the early 70’s. Good people to say the least.

I didn't get a bike till I was 10 and Mom and Dad got it there. That was my brother and my favorite store, Kuhn's was a close second. I remember when I started playing grasshoper football back in the day is what we called it when we were in JR high, and Paul Turney was our coach ,and I had bought a pair of white rubber cleats to play  Babe Ruth baseball in, so I asked Coach Turney if I could wear them playing football and he let me. I looked like Billy White Shoes Johnson out there. LOL.  Otasco  was a small Walmart back then.  BTW, I bought those cleats myself at Otasco , I had to mow alot of yards to get I think it was 8 bucks back then to buy them, but the early and mid 70's that was alot of money. Not bragging on myself at all, but how many kids now would mow a yard to buy cleats because there parents couldn't really afford extra thing's?  I loved those days and so glad I got to live them. Of course The Eagles are by far my greatest band of all time with KC and the Sunshine band right there with them. Lots of good memories and music I could understand!!

Yep I got my first bicycle there too.  A blue Mongoose with pegs and handlebars that could spin all the way around without getting the brake cables twisted.  I think they called it a “gooseneck”.

You probably don’t remember these because they were likely before your time. Elmore’s.. and Romine’s. You weren’t old enough to go in Romine’s. LMBO

I wish I had taken or someone would have taken pictures of all the older thing's in SP. All these business , well most of them were essential in building SP and that includes the football team. I remember Packys Pizza, Elmore's and Thriftway Drugs,  in that area.  I think all of this pertains to the sports venue, but we're just talking older day's here and letting other people know a little more history about SP . It's better than all the crap talk we've heard alot on here anyways. BTW, Bass, did you ever eat at the snack bar in Elmore's?  I had many hamburgers and milkshakes there. Also had many from Jimmy Lewis place there on the front street of town. What was his place called? I can't remember but Mrs. Barnes worked there and was later our cafeteria head lady at the elementary school. Never went to Romine's but had two great friends killed by that place. Andrew Winter's was the constable doing a raid there and he and another constable or policeman were killed by a drunk driver that ran into them on side of the road there and Steve Murray that I went to school with got behind a car turning in there to Romine's and he hit his brake's fast and slid into the opposite lane in front of a semi that killed him instantly there right by that building. It had been raining that day and I was working in downtown SP at that time and waved at him as he was coming through town that day and he was headed to Kimball to work and that was about 1 minute before he got killed. Still tears me up. But, also there's alot of good memories living in SP and all the History!!

Anyone remember the store on the corner (now stevarino's), I think was named the Bargin Brarn? Was it early 80's when Willis opened Crazy Cooter's in that spot? Then there was Stroup's (with horse) up the block. Anyone remember Gentry's when it was on Cedar? Do you remember John Swafford's store burning? Thinking about where Romine's was - Lion Liquor and Beverage, talk about a dangerous spot to get in and out of (I drive by there today and still SMH).

The Bargain Store? Yes, went there many a times. Stroup's was where I got most of my shoes and they had that ramp in the back of the store I use to walk up and down on and the ladies would always wrap your new shoes in Stroup paper that looked like a Christmas gift.  Your right about the beer joints. very dangerous places for traffic. Swaffords had that big Orange building where the SR Apartments is now that burned. I bought my first car a 83 Z28 from Gentry's when it was downtown. I still have three Pirate cushions we use to sit on at the games that they gave away because they were big sponsors of SP athletics in the day. I worked for Swaffords Furniture for 8 years and about know every road from Grundy, Marion, Seq, Hamilton Counties and most of Sand MTN. . How about some of these names from other schools that played football? Jerry Bryant from Grundy, Hawk Allison, Dusty Stone, Brian Stewart, Darrell Kirk. Steve Click from Bridgeport. The Barbees from Stevenson, .Those were some good ball players in the day.  Joe martin from Jasper? He scared me to just look at him.
