Alcoa through the years has always had that defensive lineman who an offense always has to run away from.  I can list 7-10 guys who were all extremely gifted high school football defensive linemen who were all multi-year all-state level players and who were just dominant figures who could impact an entire game with just their presence alone.

Grey Carroll

Jonathan Decker

Braylon Young

Darrell Warren

Tyler Robinson

Rae Sykes

Brandon Warren

Could you imagine playing an 'Alumni Football Game' against Alcoa with all of those guys coming after you?

All those guys were good but none of them were near as good as Grey Carroll.  I am glad he graduated.

Alcoa is one of the elite football programs nationally and they are coached by one of the best to ever coach at the high school level.  A lot of fans resent Alcoa for what they are and the level in which they play but at the end of the day they've grown from an area power, to a state power, to a regional power, and are now a national power.  19 State Championships and aiming for #20 this upcoming season.  Gary Rankin is entering his 40th year as a head football coach.  He's won 16 State Championships and coached in 22 State Championship Games during his Hall of Fame career.

I personally don't see Coach Rankin retiring before he reaches the 500 win plateau which would take 4 more seasons (average at 12 wins per season).  It would also likely get him to 20 State Championships unless someone is able to pull off a monumental upset and knock off Alcoa in the playoffs.

Believe it or not a lot of Alcoa fans don't appreciate Gary Rankin. I saw it right off the bat how good of a coach he was. He has made Alcoa tough to beat. He helped take Alcoa to the next level. I know Alcoa was winning state titles before Rankin got there but believe me he has made Alcoa better.

Grey was probably the best total package ( size, quickness, work ethic, character, coachable, leadership, maturity, talent, etc, ) of any HS defensive lineman I've worked with. He is something special.

It's pretty good. Not as good as Last Chance U or Undefeated. That is not a knock on Alcoa, but on the production value. There is a lot of narration. Knowing stuff behind the scenes shows how much editorial license they used on these types of things. I'm glad I watched the show about the 14-1 Tornadoes.

Everything after season 1 of last chance U kinda sucked.

I’m on the last episode now.  I admire the coaching staff and their families.  Coach Brian Nix appears to be a fantastic family man, mentor, and Coach.  The history of the Tyson name at Alcoa is what small ball is all about.  I know Alcoa isn’t considered small ball but really they are.  I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

Has Brayden Anderson signed with anyone?  Like they kept saying in the video he was the most athletic out of everyone.

Don't know if he signed with anyone. As a Maryville fan I hated to see him transfer to Alcoa. I saw his sophomore year that he was going to be great.

Gary Rankin and coaching has played a tremendous role in Alcoa's success.

So I'm genuinely asking because I really don't know the ins and outs of the TSSAAs rules. But I started rewatching the series (yeah I'm jonesing for any football I can get) and I noticed them say the transfer QB mccrary and his father were living out a hotel for most of his time in Alcoa and got a home right before Maryville. Maybe the timeline in the show was off but if not how was he eligible to play?

    • You defend your little buddy bsatt like it’s the end of the world just as much. Why don’t you go on to Upperman with him this summer… you know he is your “BEST MAN”.
    • No sir. Not staying at East. But definitely not going to Elizabethton.
    • Football and basketball coaches should not be making 100,000 not teaching any classes unless their winning state championship every year lol
