BoardHater71
I'll start by saying that this thread is clearly biased. Both men are deserving of their accolades through the years. Gary Rankin = 453 Wins (395-45 from 1990-2020). 16 State Championships. 6 State Runner-Up Finishes. George Quarles = 250-16 in 18 Years. 11 State Championships. 4 State Runner-Up Finishes. Both men are terrific football coaches who have won at the state's highest level. I find it to be sad that some of you get on here and say "one can win and the other can only win if/because....." ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? In life people hate what they are most jealous of and at the end of the day Alcoa is a football program that people are jealous of when it comes down to it. People who say Rankin only wins because Alcoa has 6A talent playing at a 3A level need a history lesson. Rankin coached in 9 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES when he was the head football coach at Riverdale at the state's highest level. Rankin coached in Rutherford County before it became watered down with the additions of schools everywhere. He coached at the state's highest level before there was a public/private split. Saying that he "only wins due to talent" is stupid. 2

What year did team football camps go away in TN and what year did two a days go away in TN. When we went to camp I swear we had three a days! Not sure about Tennessee, in Georgia two a days went the way of the doe-doe bird due to school starting earlier and earlier each fall. Trivia: What day of practice do football coaches hate more than any other? The first day of school. It’s always one of the worst days of the year. And, while he walked into a gold mine with Alcoa, Rankin built Smith Co. and Riverdale from scratch.

That was John Reid, who has added two more state titles at Rome, Ga. Rankin added 5 more in a row to it.
TomLHS
So Alcoa and Maryville have met 14 times under the Rankin regime. If my math is correct, Alcoa has won 3 and Maryville has won 11. I would say that would be dominance.

BoardHater71
Alcoa has more gold balls/rings than Maryville and that number will only continue to become more lopsided this year with Alcoa being in 3A minus the privates, Pearl, and Milan & Maryville being in 6A with an Oakland team that will be the favorite to win the title. It may grow to a point where Alcoa continues to add gold balls and Maryville goes several years without winning a gold ball. This thread and the most recent posts show that is a stat that keeps some Maryville fans up late at night. The Rebels mystique is not what it once was. Oakland, Whitehaven, and Ravenwood have proven it on the big stage in recent years. If I were an Alcoa fan, which I’m not, I would refer to that as often as possible when bantering with Maryville fans. It may reach a point where Alcoa fans have to invite Maryville fans over to their houses in order for them to see a state championship ring up close.
