Why does Smith County football suck now?

The 2013 team actually had quite a bit of talent. I wouldn't say the talent level had a massive drop off until the 2016 season.

2013 the year UHS took over that region

It has been said on here already, but a lot of it had to do with Maynard. Whether you like him or not, he was a good coach. If I recall correctly, he took SC to the semis twice. He also took Upperman to the semis in 96, and this was long before Upperman was what it is now.

Since then, some things I heard that went on, or didn't go on, under Dickerson and Murray were headscratchers to me, but the last several years, the teams have been talented but they lacked fire. I believe they have that now.

I think if Dyer is given time, he will do well there.

I don't have any doubts best hire smith has done in a while. If he's left alone smith will be back strong.

I’m planning on making the trip to Carthage on Friday night to see Smith County vs Jackson County.  It looks like they’ll be 2 of the 4 playoff teams representing Region 5.  A game at “The Hole” is always a tremendous atmosphere.

Jackson County had 25 guys (at most) in uniform on Friday night.  You can definitely tell that their coaches get the absolute most from what they have to work with.  Them beating Maplewood and qualifying for the state playoffs is a big thing.  Their game against Stratford at the end of the year will determine the 3/4 seeds in the region.  

Smith County looked very good and really dominated the game from the outset.  You can definitely see that it's a community that loves their football and wants it to get back to where Gary Rankin and Jimmy Maynard had it in years past.  Their final two games of the season against Macon County and East Nashville will be good battles with the last game being for the Region 5-3A Championship and homefield advantage in the playoffs.
