USJ vs JCS

3-2 USJ heads over to Country Club to take on 4-1 JCS. I think it's fair to say the JCS program is back as they've reloaded just fine from losing a big senior class.

USJ has played a tough schedule so far and are dealing with the adversity of losing legendary offensive coordinator Tommy Browder. They'll definitely be looking to avenge last year's penalty and error plagued loss.

I've only seen highlights of JCS, but it looks like they have good speed on offense. USJ will definitely have the advantage up front, and their defense has really improved the last couple games in stopping the big plays that hurt them against Goodpasture. I think the Bruins should be favored but anything is possible in this game as we saw last year!

This is a decades old rivalry. I love it! Can not wait for Friday. I am not on the air anymore so, I can go to whatever game I want to. I will probably be at this game.

Just my uneducated guess, JC is a small favorite to win the game.... This is completely uneducated, just sharing my initial thoughts.

JCS and USJ have been long time rivals. Most of the time, it is a great game. I hope the refs stay out of it and let the boys decide it on the field.

Seems like most folks in D2A will be looking to see how this turns out for playoff seeding  reasons.

It’s still early but there seems to be a pretty clear division of the top two teams in the West and middle divisions with the east being decided in the MTCS/FCS game the last regular season game. Kings is the heavy favorite to be the #1 in the east after their win over a young FCS team. FCS isn’t at the level of some of their teams the last few years but they have a bright future ahead of them.

NCS looks to be the top team in the state with size, speed, and talent. Their convincing win over Goodpasture and close loss to BGA, who is a likely semi-finalist in D2AA,  are both impressive. The RBs are tough, physical and very fast (track stars) and the QB is good as well. They have huge OL/DL and speed all over the place. Their seeding will also be determined at DCA the last regular season game. Those two teams are similar in size and speed so it will be interesting to see who makes the least amount of mistakes and the most plays by key players.

This game will determine who potentially travels to play a 1 seed in the playoffs. This is THE game of the year for D2A west region so best of luck to both teams. Seeing two good, well coached teams competing on Friday nights is a true blessing. Best of luck to you both.

Great post. Are you going to make it to the game Friday?

I expect a high-scoring game. I've seen most of JCS's games on film and they have a lot of offensive weapons. #23 will be a problem for teams for years to come. Their punter may be the most well-rested guy on the team, but the downfall of the offense seems to be turnovers. This could be a deciding factor in the game. I suspect the front 7 of the Bruins will be the best JCS has seen all season.

USJ was certainly glad to have #25 back last Friday. I'm not sure many teams in II-A will have an answer for him when he's firing on all cylinders. He's averaging 13.2 yards per touch and has 11 TD in 3 games. Bruins will have a clear advantage in the kicking game. The key for USJ will be keeping their heads on straight. This is a rivalry game that will be heated before the opening kick, but if the Bruins play their brand of football, they should win by 2 scores.

There have been 33 matchups between these two teams. USJ holds a commanding 27-6 lead in a series overall. On average, the score is 31.1-13.5. USJ has won nine of the last 10 meetings between the two teams. Jackson Christian has only won multiple games in a row against USJ one time (2005-2007). I broadcast two of those three wins.

If, memory serves me correct, the last game had a huge controversy that ended up getting several officials suspended or moved. I really hope this does not happen again..... Shewww, I know that each team is going to fight hard and give it their best shot, but please lets not have this again.

I hope for a clean, injury free game. Let the best team that shows up Friday win the contest cleanly. Also, be good sports.

    • Lee would have been a good choice, also.  I'm sure Benny was involved with the decision.
    • Personally I was pulling for Lee Hammonds to get another shot. He’s earned it!
    • Tyler Williams was the logical choice to be named head football. He served as the Highlanders’ strength coach and offensive coordinator.
    • I went to practice yesterday and liked what I saw for the most part. Derek and crew have done a good job during the off-season. I was very impressed with the size of some of those boys on the offensive line. My only regret was one of the boys I was really pulling for to have a good year was dismissed from the team. I have to applaud the coaches for setting examples for the others, no one is bigger than the team. One other thing, I was hoping with that big rain we got this week some of that  yellow paint would dissolve but it didn't.
    • Couple of thoughts: 1.  I just don't understand all the intricacies in TSSAA transfer rules anymore.    William Blount had a kid that played the final part of the basketball season with them this year,  that played at Hardin Valley last year, and played football for Bearden this year.  I say that to say, I know the coaches and the AD and the Principal at WB and I will never believe they would do something they knew was wrong.  They are men of character.  I BELIEVE the same thing about the coaches and administration at Maryville.  Call me gullible, but these are men and women of integrity in my experiences with them. 2.  Much like the transfer of the Clemmer kid a couple of years ago, with Smith, the football team is getting a huge boost, but the impact on the basketball team will be just as great or maybe even greater.  With Smith playing post, it frees the Sigmund kid who will be coming back from injury, to play more with his face to the basket.  The Rebels basketball squad in my mind, will be "the program" in East Tennessee next year.
