Oakland his better than Maryville...Period! I watched LA play Oakland and they controlled the game against them for three quarters. McCallie I believe was the best team in the state. Alcoa is very good, but definitely would not beat any of those teams. We all know the game is played on the field , I am answering a hypothetical post. If you can't handle it, don't read these posts.

How about you ask the McCallie Coach about the scrimmage with Alcoa this summer and get back with us!

you keep basing your opinion on past seasons.  we are talking about THIS season where Alcoa had a MUCH easier schedule than any of the other teams mentioned.  I get that Alcoa's long term success is very special but it has little to do with what happens this year outside of team experience.  I think Oakland beat LA partially due to experience in tough games (LA had zero close games all year) but they are just a great team.  I don't think Alcoa's past years override the fact that they didn't play a tough schedule to show what they can do.

and Alcoa isn't the only team having trouble scheduling.  Dilfer called out teams on the radio by name that they wouldn't take his call.  I don't have anything to do with scheduling and you probably don't either. but please don't act like Alcoa is the only school that has a tough time finding teams.  LA played 3 out of state opponents for that very reason.  BTW, one was a top 100 defending and eventual state champ of Arkansas...and they got mercy ruled.  that plus smoking CPA 2 times are quality wins which Alcoa doesn't have.

in the end, I hope LA's success continues and they get to play teams like Alcoa.

I'm basing it on this season. They just happen to have the equity of the past seasons. But it seems those in the Mid-State area want to discredit Alcoa by playing the we beat this team we beat that team game so therefore Alcoa would lose. Those games have no merit and playing Oakland close doesn't qualify as anything other than a loss. Right now it's Oakland, Alcoa and then argue for 3rd and beyond based on this year. I'm not discrediting LA and congratulations as Trent disrupted the private school cycle in Nashville.  I'm sure, LA had issues scheduling game. Alcoa plays whoever is front of them weak or not and end result is same if that team is not named Maryville. For the record I'm not a Alcoa fan or any affiliation, just someone who acknowledges they are in a class that only Oakland and Maryville can relate to at this moment in time.

LA is at least as good as Oakland. I'm by NO means an LA fan, just being truthful because I saw the game in person.

well Alcoa's strength of schedule doesn't back you up this year.  dilfer got oakland to play with one week's notice.  maybe you guys didnt call.  :  )   note I based LA's performance on 3 quality wins, not the close loss.

I am sorry you feel I am discrediting Alcoa.  no disrespect intended.  I try to mention my respect for their tradition regularly.  I think I am just asking for respect for teams not named Alcoa or Maryville and once again, I think the quality wins back it up.  fingers crossed for some matchups in years to come.

in any case, I came over here to enjoy this enthusiastic fanbase and you didn't disappoint.  all the best.

Great discussion and I love seeing all the back and forth.  To answer the original question, I think Oakland, McCallie, and LA beat Alcoa this year.....that's my opinion.  It is also my opinion that Rankin is one of the best coaches in Tn HS football history and he has the Ships to back it up...even before he got to Alcoa.  Riverdale was Oakland in Murfreesboro while Rankin coached.  They guy takes good talent and makes them better.

Since I'm kicking the hornet's nest...Does the Baylor job interest Rankin?  Boarding school and recruiting?

That's another thread...:roflolk:

Not a chance! I don't recall Alcoa playing LA. Again, you barely beat Knox West

What's this you? I stated earlier I'm not affiliated with Alcoa. Just know when people think they can beat them, they don't. I'm a Powell guy, we beat West 35-7. Again, in Tennessee it's Oakland, Alcoa and then everyone else.

Here is a proposed playoff system that might answer such questions, although the TSSAA will never adopt anything like this:

Never happen.  Do the math on the amount of games played in the football playoffs.  Now start counting how many people go to each game..  Each playoff ticket costs $8, 4 of it goes to the TSSAA.  Based on the system right now, the TSSAA pays all their bills and breaks even by the end of the year.

Ain't happening, TSSAA would be killing their bottom line.

you mean, Oakland, Maryville, Alcoa?  that's actual on the field results.  : )  and since history matters so much in regards to this year...Alcoa has only beaten Maryville once in the last 11 years or so.  not even close.

Yep, that's what I said originally. Until is was spun with hypotheticals. Said in my first post, Oakland because they shown to be the only team to beat Maryville. And Maryville because they've been the only team to beat Alcoa. As the hypotheticals kept playing out, just cut Maryville out and go straight to the point. Oakland, Alcoa and everyone else.

    • Lee would have been a good choice, also.  I'm sure Benny was involved with the decision.
    • Personally I was pulling for Lee Hammonds to get another shot. He’s earned it!
    • Tyler Williams was the logical choice to be named head football. He served as the Highlanders’ strength coach and offensive coordinator.
    • I went to practice yesterday and liked what I saw for the most part. Derek and crew have done a good job during the off-season. I was very impressed with the size of some of those boys on the offensive line. My only regret was one of the boys I was really pulling for to have a good year was dismissed from the team. I have to applaud the coaches for setting examples for the others, no one is bigger than the team. One other thing, I was hoping with that big rain we got this week some of that  yellow paint would dissolve but it didn't.
    • Couple of thoughts: 1.  I just don't understand all the intricacies in TSSAA transfer rules anymore.    William Blount had a kid that played the final part of the basketball season with them this year,  that played at Hardin Valley last year, and played football for Bearden this year.  I say that to say, I know the coaches and the AD and the Principal at WB and I will never believe they would do something they knew was wrong.  They are men of character.  I BELIEVE the same thing about the coaches and administration at Maryville.  Call me gullible, but these are men and women of integrity in my experiences with them. 2.  Much like the transfer of the Clemmer kid a couple of years ago, with Smith, the football team is getting a huge boost, but the impact on the basketball team will be just as great or maybe even greater.  With Smith playing post, it frees the Sigmund kid who will be coming back from injury, to play more with his face to the basket.  The Rebels basketball squad in my mind, will be "the program" in East Tennessee next year.
