Please tell me more about mater dei coming down

Evansville Mater Dei attended the FR tournament in the mid 90’s with a Top 25 national ranking only to have Father Ryan edge them out for the tournament championship.  To the best of my knowledge Mater Dei never returned to the FR tournament but FR has made multiple trips to the Mater Dei tournament.

While the Irish had a good tournament everyone must remember that there is a lot of difference between a tournament team and a dual match team.  IMO, a healthy Baylor is the best dual match and tournament team in Tennessee.

Between COVID-19 and the snow storm that hit Nashville you had over 30 teams that were not able to make it to the tournament.  Let’s hope that next year all of the teams are able to make the trip for the Johnny Drennan 85 Memorial Wrestling Tournament.

The Irish did have a good tournament and are a very good team. They won some right matches for which they should get credit. However, Cleveland did not enter a 145 or HWT wrestler. Davis would have won the tournament and Cooper would have done well.  That may not have made a difference but at a minimum would have made it much closer. And as you say a tournament is different than a dual meet.  Should be a good one between FR and Baylor.

You must compete with the kids that you have available at the time of the tournament/dual.  When Cleveland defeated Baylor in the dual Baylor was not at full strength so let’s stop with the excuses!  It’s my understanding that FR was  also competing with at least one backup and maybe two so who are we to try and predict what the outcome may have been!

Would Davis have won the tournament if James Howard had been out of Covid-19 protocol and been able to wrestle?  Where were Davis and Cooper?

I was in the stands at Ryan for this Tournament. It was either 1998 or 1999 when the Irish clinched at the 189 or 215 match in the Finals and the entire gym went crazy. (It felt like it was all teams and fans vs Mater Dei that weekend)

Ryan has traveled to Mater Dei a number of times since then, but they never came back, which is surprising because they would have probably been the favorite almost every year.

The weather messed up travel for a number of teams this weekend, but as a wrestling fan, I really missed watching Union at the Tournament this year. They have a couple of hammers and great program! Sounds like Legacy Christian from Ohio would have been fun to watch too!

LOL. No one is making excuses I was simple pointing out Cleveland didn’t enter a wrestler in 2 weight classes and clearly stated it may not have made a difference.  I think FR has a great team.    I think they lose to Baylor but think it will be close and they certainly could win. And I agree that Baylor might have beaten Cleveland at full strength - never said otherwise. FR gave Cleveland a close dual match.  I was surprised they lost to Woodland the next day whom Cleveland destroyed. Matchups matter. Why so salty, bro? Your team is really good.
