I think the right guy can be successful there. Everyone wants to win, but I don't think expectations would pressure a new coach to take shortcuts...athletes and community support should be there for someone to build on the young talent and eventually have a competitive program.

Good take on that program. always been a bowling/football and recently a baseball school. Can't remember them being that good in basektball.

Great place to coach. School board, admin, and community understand all that comes with being a rural school. Work hard, don't embarrass the school, and you can build a program. Best place I've ever coached.

Slightly off topic, but curious; what are the top (5-10?) things that you consider when labeling a HS coaching position a good or bad job?

I'm probably missing a few, but here's what immediately comes to mind for me:

(1) Admin support (2) Feeder program (3) Demographics (4) Support from other Coaches (football, baseball, etc). (5) Facilities (6) Parent & Alumni support (7) Tradition (8) Budget (9) Booster Club.

Facilities - I don't need college level facilities but sometimes the basics are a bonus. I've coached at HS's in Puerto Rico and Hawaii that had AMAZING admin support but the facilities and budget were sorely lacking. Neither school had a locker room, practice gear or a laundry room (I did it myself). Players changed in the bathroom or just wore their shorts under their school clothes. On game days we did halftime from the bench (which is what I prefer anyways). In Puerto Rico I had to buy the entire teams game shorts and game shoes for 7-8 kids every year in HI & PR. I will say this about both of those programs, those kids were mentally tougher than most! Some of the players from Puerto Rico I consider my closest adult  friends (I was there 2001-04).

I’m really interested to see what direction they go here. Coach Carpenter IMO left things in good shape. Guys worked hard and played hard for him. Coach Guyer the assistant played at HC and is young but he from all I know is a tremendous young man and aspiring young coach. But they may go after a seasoned coach. Hope they get a good one

It might take a "wow" guy to change things for HC. Effort and coaching haven't been that bad, they just don't get the athletes that baseball and football do. Both those programs have become players in the conversation for deep runs in state playoff scenarios, and though that hasn't exactly played out in their favor yet, they've left the expectations for the roundball team in the dust. Get a "name", get the players, and build the program. Believe me, the kids are there to get it done, they just play other sports.

I agree, there is plenty of talent at HC. But a lot of the athletes are not playing multiple sports for sure. That’s seems to be becoming more normal than it use to be. I remember the days where your QB was usually your PG for basketball and your SS/pitcher on the baseball team!

    • He resigned smh, and have you ever heard of charged but not convicted. Some people in this county baffle me with their need to slander others. Have you asked any of the 30+ parents that signed a petition to get him reinstated at the board meeting this week how they feel about this? Just let it play out, at the end of the day the only people that will bring TC back are the ones that know what its about at its core.    People hate losing and they aren't used to it at TC. I for 1, and I'm sure others too, understand having a dip in talent and not being able to compete for a state title every year. But in the past, TC teams have outworked more talented teams, they didn't continuously lose the turnover battle, they didn't commit 8+ penalties in several games each season, and I believe several of the folks in town that want Blake out feel as if he is neglecting the history of the program. This is from a source that used to be extremely close to the program (not me lol), Blake gets out of school midday and the players show up and there is no practice plan or itinerary.  I also understand those that are on team Blake, when he has loads of talent, he wins. He does know football and he is a tremendous DC, and if the rumors are true then he will do great things. As for the board member issue, it is what it is, everyone that's true to the county know that and nothing has changed. I agree though that they should strive to make the facilities as good as we can. And as far as potential candidates, I agree there is very few options. West, Vetetoe (yes I know), and couple others that could have some interest. Whatever happens is massive for the program during a pivotal time before the next big wave of stars make their way through.
    • McKenzie had no trouble with Huntingdon.
    • Has BA landed any cornfed cowboys to block up front?
    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
