It helps those kids who get pigeon holed in a weight class to get a chance to shine . ive seen plenty of programs who might have 2 really good heavyweights or 106 lbers who both have the talent to do well at state. I think it helps give kids and teams opportunities that they haven't had before. for example this year my 106 took 2nd, when he was out sick his back up went 33-2 on varsity. this kid could not bump up because the 113 was a state medalist. this also happens a lot at heavyweight. I would like to see a team like Wilson Central be allowed to enter 2 kids per weight classification (28 total wrestlers) into the region tournament. The only stipulation being that you as a coach would be required to designate which wrestler per weight classification would be allowed to score points before the regional tournament began. If your point scorer for a weight classification were to go 0-2 in the region and not advance to the substate you would just lose any opportunity to score points at that weight classification going forward even if the backup were to become a state champion. cbg
Personally I am good with everyone being allowed to score team points. I just felt that it would stand a much better opportunity to pass if a team were only allowed one point scorer per weight classification. I would even go so far as to say that as a state we should make this change immediately and also place everyone back together for one unified state championship.
