That is so funny and true Shelbyville was a big favorite. Shelbyville was always an hindrance to AC in those years but the Mavs took them out 35-14 that night.

Cleveland went on to knock out Greeneville 28-14. . The Cleveland Game was so hyped up at AC that that it would have been hard for any team to win that night it was too much excitement and as always that was the Mavs state championship. But that's the youth in all of us.

No excuses. You all were the better team and beat us decisively, but that entire 1996 season was a trying one for us at Cleveland. Coach Monroe seemed from day one to regret his decision not to retire after the previous season (he had been eligible to retire since after the ‘93 season, and did retire after ‘96.) Unless you have ever been the Super Bowl vs. every team that you face, you can’t imagine how it finally wears you down. The fact that we were nationally ranked only added to the pressure. I felt that we peaked that season around Week 7 in a game at McCallie in Chattanooga that we won 49-7. At the time, it was the worst home loss ever for McCallie. I remember saying to another coach as we walked out of the stadium “I hope that we didn’t just see our team peak.” Unfortunately, we had. The next weeks brought one injury on top of the other, plus the fatigue factor. The regular season finale was played in a pour down at Chattanooga Central. Coach set most of the starters to try and avoid turned ankles on that quagmire of a field. We had to fight to pull out the win and preserve The Streak. Good luck to the Mavs this fall.

We played Shelbyville twice during our run. Both in Round 3, both at home. ‘93 was over before it started. ‘95 should have been a closer game but the team lost their composure over what I admit was probably a bad call early in the 2nd qtr. A quick whistle on an in the grasp call gave Cleveland a safety. The Shelbyville coach lost his mind, and the wheels came off for his team.

Thank you! Cleveland has seen a good run for a while. I think it was at 44 wins or something like that. And I think I remember our student signs saying 44 and no more. Can't remember. But what I did know was Cleveland was loaded with athletes. Every play I remember holding my breath. Because if Cleveland were able to take that 3rd step it was over for the Mavs. Because once they got past the line it was time to start counting prayers and off to the races. Some how I will never know but they did not get that 3rd step past the line of scrimmage, well the one TD they did lol. But after 44 games any team is on the radar and all great things come to an end. That night we were the better team and that win streak for Cleveland was amazing!

This year I have held back in calling this a dream team for the Mavs but I will have to wait and see. Best of luck for Cleveland this year too!

Thanks, but I’m long, long gone from Cleveland. Had 3 more stops in my home state of Georgia, and am now retired, even though I still help a program on a part-time basis. I remember that sign “54 and no more!” Our last loss was Round 2 of the 1992 three class playoff system vs. Riverdale. My personal view is that the 1990’s Cleveland will never be back. They could perhaps match the 1980’s Cleveland teams.

In fact, the last time I was at Cleveland High was the year they hosted Maryville in Round 3 of the 4A playoffs about 20 years ago when Leon Brown was HC. My team was out of the playoffs so I went and set in the stands.

Ok it was dang 54...I remember the signs and said well we are at least fired up..lol

I think Cleveland has more talent than people know but you have to capitalize with good programs and in HS discipline plays a major roll anywhere.

Good luck with retirement and good to chat with someone else that has seen that game. Lives in infamy with strong Mav fans! Lol

chs 1984,I remember that game. Wow , it was historic in so many ways.  The Mavs have great respect for Cleveland High for sure. I think they still have a very good relationship with them currently as I know the Mavs have stopped by for pre game walk throughs on their way to the Chattanooga games they played there recently.   I am sure with the current staff , that game has to pop back into their minds.

As far as the Spring game, I was there.  The Mavs divided up teams, and had a very competitive scrimmage.   Bryson Vowell was certainly a star as he made several circus catches as well as his regular go routes that ended up in BIG plays for the Maverick offense.   He has had several big schools offer him lately  including BIG10 Iowa and Memphis.  Martinez was on point all night hitting  Allen, Miller, Braden, Russell , and West for several long throws down the field.  Jermaine Allen was new to the team last season, but began the scrimmage with a 65 yard touchdown pass from Martinez.  He has an offer from a KY school also.    Moog, Noe, and Meier all took reps at the RB position, and all are big kids to bring down. Noe has picked up several D1 offers as well.   I guess the big surprise to me was how big the offensive line looked.   Davis and Clayton, have made the move to the offensive line, both are 6'3 and long armed players.   Davis recruiting has picked up as well.  He was offered by a Kentucky school last week.   They linked up with Bradshaw, Mayes, and Nelson to give the Mavs a push up front.  It was great to see Phillps and newcomer Small on defense making plays.  All three kickers were at camp is what I was told, but all three saw action last season, and I am told one is driving the ball out of the endzone at practice daily.  That is good news for the Mav Defense as it makes it tough on an offense  to start at the 20 each time.  Wolfenbarger, LaRue, Cole all took reps with the ones, and looked solid with the ball .  Strickland was still on the baseball field, but I am betting he;s in the lineup for sure as a top notch skill player on the JV last season.  I saw a young QB out on the field throwing some balls during the breaks, word in the stands was that he was a transfer from Georgia, but I didn't get his name.  He was a tall kid with a big arm.   Excited for the season, and the opener with #1 Powell.  It promises to be a sell out crowd and a game for the record books as both teams return really talented teams.  Last year's game almost gave me a heart attack as it was close for about three hours.  Let's hope for a safe summer, and that the Mavs are ready for a run with this team.

Great game Caldwell was QB now Coastal Carolina Head coach,  Gillum current head coach of Mavs at running back and Curtis La Rue speedster receiver and a Great head coach Kerr. This was a disaster for Cleveland with Nations longest winning streak. They were caught of guard and while the offense scored at will the Defense was one of the best the Mavs have ever put together. 3 and outs for Cleveland was killing them and then the inability to adjust to Kerr Caldwell Gillum and La Rue was an all time great Mavericks win. The Mavs went ahead and held it to send Cleveland home with the heads hanging low. Boy that game brings back memories!!!

Great team!

I saw the lights on early this morning on my way in, and stopped off to see if practice was about to start.  I counted 78 players, and Coach G had those guys on the move from group to group. I saw a couple of new faces out there coaching, and one coach that I recognized, but thought he had gone somewhere else.  He is a Bigtime addition to the staff, but I haven't seen where he is official. I'll wait until I see something official , but if Coach Gillum got who I think he got, the Mavs added a fine staff member to the team.   OL /DL guys looked huge, and Skill players all over the field.  They had great energy while I was there.  Ill check back in on them as we go through the week , and give ya updates on what I see.

    • Lol! I was being a bit facetious.
    • Way late on this post, but I do believe that I want to at least weight in so to speak lol. I wrestled NAIA competed against some of the best wrestler over all a crossed the divisions and felt great about my college wrestling experience. I think people make the mistake in believe that wrestling some how gets easier as a sport at the smaller college divisions it doesn't the training is mostly the same. I have that on good authority from a coach who was a D1 all-American. it's more the commitment level of the competitors that is different. There is talented wrestlers that can go D1 at any level in the smaller division. sub in Sammy Shires for one he would have done fine on a DI team. He chose a work life ratio that suited him. It's not about talent it's commitment are you going to make training and studying the sport the center of your world cause that's what it takes: NO MATTER HOW TALATENTED BEFORE HAND YOU ARE.  If so then D1 is for you and striving for success at that level is for you like Mr. Palmer said it's what your willing to put in. Now coaches if you have a successful wrestler who fits that bill then by all means D1 is a great option they will see some success no matter how small, but if they are not that committed along with being talented and a killer and you know it then your doing them wrong.  You don't have to tell athletes that you don't think they are D1 tell them to keep their options open to take all their visits to consider all the divisions regardless of their goals. college recruiting visits have you most times wrestle against their current wrestlers coaches and athletes  will find out real quick it's not easy no matter where you go. That way when they make their decision it's a sound one that's based on well rounded experiences.     BobCorker, and oceansize42 I believe what you are thinking is correct but for different reasons. TN wrestler's have the talent... it's a commitment level change. TN wrestlers aren't used to having to put themselves through the level of commitment required and kills them on the D1 level.    WrestlingGod, I agree you should push kids to pursue their dreams, but not at the cost of common sense period... we have to much of that going around this country already. Dreams can turn to poison when these wrestler are not educated on what it truly takes. In TN  a kid who understands wrestling to a high level can be successful with small amounts of hard work. They think their definition of hard work is enough for D1 that is the mistake not the "talent/understanding".  Over-all though we do not celebrate NAIA,D2,D3, or Juco success in this state like other states do. GA/AL celebrates all it's college wrestlers success a crossed the  board no matter the division. Why? because it's hard... I have gone to all the divisions National championships let me tell you to be a all-American at any is impressive especially D2 or NAIA. those guys can scrap and not one of those AA's are an easy match. all of them were state placers or champs multiple times in their high school careers. does that at all sound easy to place at? TN does not give those guys enough credit or shout outs period. it's an over sight because of this D1 or it's less than meaningless   mentality on this site and in this state. GA/AL is better then us on the highest stage because they send guys to D2,NAIA,D3 ect. they come back understanding the sport better then their pervious coaches, and give back and that cycles to athletes readiness to go D1 with clearer understanding of what it takes to be competitive day 1 freshman year.             My post isn't to support one way or the other but to just consider that both sides have merit and that both work when the system in TN. by system I mean coaches are the better educated on preparing athletes for each level they want and should pursue.
    • If you think McKenzie could've beat Riverside I have a bridge you might like to buy.
    • Hate to hear Ricky is heading to the old folk's home!
    • By recruiting, I mean members of a coaching staff are talking to, meeting with, giving tours, to students, and their guardians, that are not zoned for their school.    there’s no way that many non Bearden kids just showed up all at once without being recruited. It can’t be a coincidence that all those kids also went through the middle school all star game your boss puts on every year.
